NATRISE 30MG Tablet

Name

Brand Name: Natrise 30mg Tablet Common Name: Tolvaptan 30mg

Composition

Natrise 30mg Tablet contains Tolvaptan 30mg as its active ingredient. Tolvaptan is a vasopressin antagonist.

Uses

Natrise 30mg Tablet is primarily used for the treatment of low sodium levels in the blood, a condition known as hyponatremia. This can occur in various conditions, including:

  • Heart failure
  • Cirrhosis (liver disease)
  • Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH)

Additionally, it is also prescribed for the treatment of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) to slow the rate of kidney function decline in adults. The medicine works by blocking the effect of the hormone vasopressin, which leads to increased urine production, reduced water content in the blood, and a rise in blood sodium levels.

Dosage and Administration

Natrise 30mg Tablet should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food, but it is advisable to take it at the same time every day. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not chewed, cut, or crushed. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose and duration. For correction of sodium levels, it is generally not recommended for use beyond 30 days. Initial treatment or restarting of the medicine often requires observation in a hospital setting. Patients should drink water as soon as they feel thirsty to avoid dehydration.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Frequent urge to urinate (polyuria)
  • Increased urination at night (nocturia)
  • Dryness in mouth
  • Increased thirst
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Increased creatinine level in blood
  • Increased potassium level in blood (hyperkalemia)
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Unexplained weight loss

Serious side effects can occur if blood sodium levels increase too quickly, potentially leading to Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome (ODS), which can cause serious nerve damage, coma, and even death. Symptoms of ODS may include trouble speaking or swallowing, drowsiness, confusion, mood changes, fits, involuntary movements, and muscle weakness.

Precautions

Natrise 30mg Tablet is unsafe for use during pregnancy and probably unsafe during breastfeeding. It should be used with caution in patients with liver disease and kidney disease. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it may increase dizziness. The medicine may decrease alertness, affect vision, or cause sleepiness and dizziness, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Do not take Natrise if you are unable to urinate (anuria), are severely dehydrated, or cannot tell when you are thirsty. Close monitoring of blood sodium levels is crucial during treatment. It is not recommended for children under 18 years of age.

Storage

Store Natrise 30mg Tablet below 30°C. It should be kept at room temperature and away from direct sunlight, and out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

NATRISE 30MG Tablet is a medication primarily used to manage low sodium levels in the blood, a condition known as hyponatremia. It contains the active ingredient Tolvaptan.

What is NATRISE 30MG Tablet used for?

NATRISE 30MG Tablet is used to treat low sodium levels in the blood (hyponatremia). This condition can be associated with various medical issues such as heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and the Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone (SIADH). It is also used to slow the rate of kidney function decline in adults with rapidly progressing autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD).

How does NATRISE 30MG Tablet work?

NATRISE 30MG Tablet contains Tolvaptan, which is a vasopressin V2-receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of vasopressin (also known as antidiuretic hormone) on the kidneys. This inhibition prevents the kidneys from reabsorbing too much water, leading to an increase in urine production and excretion of water without significantly affecting sodium levels. This process ultimately helps to increase the sodium concentration in the blood.

What is the usual dosage for NATRISE 30MG Tablet?

The dosage of NATRISE 30MG Tablet is determined by your doctor, who will consider your age, body weight, and medical condition. It is typically taken once daily and can be consumed with or without food. Your doctor may adjust the dosage based on your response to the medicine and serum sodium levels. It is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions precisely and not to alter the dose or discontinue the medication without consultation.

What are the possible side effects of NATRISE 30MG Tablet?

Common side effects of NATRISE 30MG Tablet include increased thirst, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, loose motions (diarrhea), constipation, increased frequency of urination, and tiredness. You may also experience increased urination at night. Most of these side effects are usually mild and may resolve on their own. If any side effects worsen or persist, you should consult your doctor.

Is NATRISE 30MG Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

NATRISE 30MG Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy as its components are known to be harmful to the fetus. Women should use appropriate contraceptive measures to avoid pregnancy while taking this medicine. Similarly, it is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women, as components of this medicine are known to be excreted in milk and may be unsafe. Always consult your doctor for advice if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Can NATRISE 30MG Tablet be taken with other medications?

Concomitant use of NATRISE 30MG Tablet with certain medications can lead to interactions. For instance, taking it with strong CYP3A inhibitors like ketoconazole, clarithromycin, or diltiazem can increase its blood levels and effectiveness. Conversely, medicines like rifabutin or carbamazepine can decrease its effectiveness. It can also interact with diuretics, antidepressants, and antiarrhythmics. You should inform your doctor about all other medicines, herbal preparations, and supplements you are currently taking to avoid possible drug interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using NATRISE 30MG Tablet?

Patients should avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking this medicine as it can increase the risk of side effects. You should not take NATRISE 30MG Tablet if you are unable to urinate, unable to recognize thirst, or are severely dehydrated. Caution is advised for patients with liver disease, diabetes, heart disease, or Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD). Your doctor will monitor your blood sodium levels closely during treatment. Since the medicine causes water loss, it is important to drink plenty of water as advised by your doctor to prevent dehydration. Alcohol should be avoided as it can worsen side effects like dizziness and dehydration.

What happens if a dose of NATRISE 30MG Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of NATRISE 30MG Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should NATRISE 30MG Tablet be stored?

NATRISE 30MG Tablet should be stored at room temperature, ideally between 20°C to 25°C, in a cool and dry place. Keep it in its original packaging and protect it from light and moisture. Always ensure it is kept out of reach of children and pets.
