Description

MOXIFLOX TAB by CIPLA HEALTH LTD

Name

  • Brand Name: MOXIFLOX TAB
  • Generic Name: Moxifloxacin

Composition

MOXIFLOX TAB contains Moxifloxacin 400 mg as its active ingredient. Moxifloxacin is a synthetic broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic.

Uses

Moxifloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections in adults by inhibiting bacterial DNA replication and repair. It is prescribed for:

  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Acute bacterial sinusitis
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Uncomplicated and complicated skin and skin structure infections
  • Complicated intra-abdominal infections
  • Plague

Dosage and Administration

The typical adult oral dosage is 400 mg once every 24 hours. The duration of treatment varies depending on the type and severity of the infection, usually ranging from 5 to 21 days. Tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Drink plenty of fluids. Do not cut or crush the tablet.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, vomiting, stomach pain, and constipation. Serious side effects can include:

  • Tendon problems (tendinitis and tendon rupture)
  • Nerve problems (peripheral neuropathy)
  • Serious allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing)
  • Heart rhythm changes (QT prolongation)
  • Severe diarrhea (Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea)
  • Mood and behavior changes (anxiety, confusion, hallucinations)
  • Liver injury

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart problems, low potassium or magnesium levels, diabetes, myasthenia gravis, or nerve problems. Moxifloxacin can interact with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, iron or zinc supplements, sucralfate, warfarin, and certain diabetes or heart rhythm medications. Administer moxifloxacin at least 4 hours before or 8 hours after products containing multivalent cations. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV light as it can increase skin sensitivity.

Storage

Store MOXIFLOX TAB at room temperature, between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F). Excursions are permitted between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Keep in a cool, dry place, away from light and heat, and out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

MOXIFLOX TAB, containing the active ingredient Moxifloxacin, is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics.

Here are some frequently asked questions about MOXIFLOX TAB:

What is MOXIFLOX TAB used for?

MOXIFLOX TAB is primarily used to treat bacterial infections in adults. These include respiratory tract infections such as acute bacterial sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, and community-acquired pneumonia. It is also used for complicated and uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, and complicated intra-abdominal infections (often in combination with other antibiotics). Moxifloxacin can also be used to treat and prevent plague and anthrax in specific situations.

How does MOXIFLOX TAB work?

Moxifloxacin, the active ingredient in MOXIFLOX TAB, works by killing bacteria. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase (also known as topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are crucial for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and cell division. By blocking these enzymes, moxifloxacin prevents bacteria from multiplying and ultimately leads to bacterial cell death.

What is the usual dosage of MOXIFLOX TAB?

For adults, the typical oral dosage of Moxifloxacin is 400 mg once every 24 hours. The duration of therapy depends on the type and severity of the infection, usually ranging from 5 to 21 days. It is important to follow your doctor's specific instructions regarding dosage and duration.

What are the possible side effects of MOXIFLOX TAB?

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headache, vomiting, dizziness, and stomach pain. More serious but less common side effects can include tendon problems (tendinitis or tendon rupture), nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) causing pain, burning, tingling, or weakness in the limbs, and central nervous system effects like anxiety, confusion, or seizures. Moxifloxacin may also cause changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation) and increased sensitivity to sunlight. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions can occur. It is crucial to contact your doctor immediately if you experience any severe or persistent side effects.

Is MOXIFLOX TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Moxifloxacin use during pregnancy should be carefully evaluated, balancing potential benefits against risks to the developing fetus. Animal studies have indicated the potential for moxifloxacin to cause congenital disabilities, particularly in the first trimester. For breastfeeding, moxifloxacin is known to be excreted in breast milk, posing a potential risk to the infant. Healthcare providers generally advise considering alternative antibiotics with more established safety profiles during breastfeeding, especially for non-life-threatening infections, or to monitor the infant for gastrointestinal effects like diarrhea.

Can MOXIFLOX TAB be taken with other medications?

Moxifloxacin can interact with several medications. It is very important to avoid taking MOXIFLOX TAB at the same time as antacids, multivitamins, or supplements containing aluminum, magnesium, iron, or zinc, as these can reduce the absorption and effectiveness of moxifloxacin. These should be taken at least 4 hours before or 8 hours after moxifloxacin. Additionally, caution is advised with certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) due to an increased risk of central nervous system effects. Moxifloxacin can also interact with drugs that prolong the QT interval, blood thinners like warfarin, and certain diabetes medications, potentially leading to increased risks. Always inform your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while taking MOXIFLOX TAB?

It is important to complete the entire prescribed course of treatment, even if you start feeling better, to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent antibiotic resistance. Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight or artificial UV light (like tanning beds) as Moxifloxacin can increase sensitivity to the sun. Be cautious when driving or operating machinery, as the medicine may cause dizziness. Patients with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar levels closely, as moxifloxacin can affect them. Inform your doctor if you have a history of tendon problems, myasthenia gravis, heart rhythm disorders (QT prolongation), or kidney issues.

What happens if a dose of MOXIFLOX TAB is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose (e.g., less than 8 hours until the next dose), skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses to make up for a missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects.

How should MOXIFLOX TAB be stored?

Store MOXIFLOX TAB in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it from freezing and out of the reach of children.
