Description

MONTEMAC LKID (10 TAB) by MACLEODS PHARMACEUTICALS LTD.

Name:

  • Brand Name: MONTEMAC L KID Tablet

Composition: Each tablet contains a combination of two active ingredients:

  • Levocetirizine: 2.5 mg
  • Montelukast (as Montelukast Sodium): 4 mg

Levocetirizine is an antihistamine, while Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. This combination works by blocking chemical messengers that cause allergic reactions and inflammation in the airways and nose.

Uses: MONTEMAC L KID Tablet is primarily prescribed for children to treat and prevent symptoms associated with various allergic conditions and respiratory disorders. These include:

  • Allergic Rhinitis: Seasonal and perennial allergies, hay fever symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and nasal congestion.
  • Allergic Skin Conditions: Treatment of skin rashes, itching, redness, and swelling associated with allergies like chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives).
  • Asthma: Management and prevention of asthma symptoms, including wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, particularly when associated with allergies. It helps lower airway inflammation and improves breathing. It is not for acute asthma attacks.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Take MONTEMAC L KID Tablet orally, with or without food, as directed by your physician.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
  • The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water; do not crush, break, or chew it.
  • It is often recommended to take it at a fixed time, preferably at night, for optimal results.
  • Complete the entire course of treatment, even if symptoms improve.
  • If a dose is missed, give it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. If your child vomits within 30 minutes of taking the medicine, give the same dose again.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Drowsiness/Sleepiness
  • Fatigue/Weakness
  • Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Stomach pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Skin rash, Hives, Itching
  • Fever, Sore throat

Serious side effects, though rare, should be reported to a doctor immediately. These include severe allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, breathing difficulties) and neuropsychiatric changes such as agitation, depression, irritability, anxiety, nightmares, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts.

Precautions:

  • Allergies: Avoid use if allergic to Levocetirizine, Montelukast, or any other components of the formulation.
  • Kidney and Liver Impairment: Use with caution in children with kidney or liver problems. Dosage adjustment may be necessary, and it is not recommended for severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Montelukast may exacerbate symptoms in individuals with existing neuropsychiatric conditions. Monitor for changes in behavior or mood.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase drowsiness and affect alertness.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medicines your child is taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, to avoid potential interactions (e.g., with sedatives, antifungal drugs like ketoconazole, or certain anti-asthmatic medicines like theophylline).
  • Other Conditions: Inform your doctor about any history of heart problems, lung problems, blood disorders, or epilepsy.

Storage:

  • Store MONTEMAC L KID Tablet at room temperature, typically below 25°C or 30°C.

Frequently asked questions

What is MONTEMAC LKID used for?

MONTEMAC LKID is primarily used in children to manage symptoms of various allergic conditions. These include seasonal and perennial allergies such as hay fever, which cause sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and nasal congestion. It also treats allergic skin conditions like chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). Additionally, it can help in the control and prevention of symptoms related to bronchial asthma, such as wheezing and shortness of breath.

How does MONTEMAC LKID work?

MONTEMAC LKID is a combination medicine containing two active ingredients: Levocetirizine and Montelukast. Levocetirizine is an antihistamine that blocks the action of histamine, a chemical messenger released during allergic reactions, thereby reducing symptoms like itching, sneezing, and watery eyes. Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks leukotrienes, another set of chemical messengers responsible for inflammation, swelling, and constriction of airways, thus helping to reduce inflammation in the nose and improve breathing.

What is the usual dosage for MONTEMAC LKID?

The dosage of MONTEMAC LKID should be strictly as advised by your doctor, as it can vary based on your child's age, condition, and response to treatment. It is typically taken once daily. The tablet can be administered with or without food and should be swallowed whole with a glass of water; it should not be chewed, crushed, or broken. For asthma, it's often preferred in the evening or a couple of hours before physical activity, while for allergies, it might be given in the morning or evening depending on symptom onset.

What are the possible side effects of MONTEMAC LKID?

Common side effects associated with MONTEMAC LKID include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, dry mouth, and sleepiness. Other potential side effects include skin rash, upper respiratory tract infection, fever, sore throat, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as neuropsychiatric changes (e.g., agitation, depression, irritability, anxiety, suicidal thoughts) or severe allergic reactions may occur. If any side effects persist, worsen, or cause concern, consult your pediatrician immediately.

Is MONTEMAC LKID safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

MONTEMAC LKID is primarily indicated for use in children. For pregnant women, its use can potentially lead to severe side effects, and it should only be taken if explicitly prescribed by a doctor, with careful consideration of the benefits and risks. For breastfeeding mothers, a component of this medicine can pass into breast milk and may cause drowsiness in the infant. Therefore, it is generally recommended to avoid MONTEMAC LKID while breastfeeding unless directed by a healthcare professional.

Can MONTEMAC LKID be taken with other medications?

It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications, including supplements and herbal remedies, your child is currently taking to prevent potential drug interactions. MONTEMAC LKID may interact with certain medications:

  • Sedatives (e.g., diazepam, alprazolam): Can increase sedative effects when taken concurrently.
  • Antifungal drugs (e.g., ketoconazole): May affect the absorption of levocetirizine.
  • Anti-asthmatic medicines (e.g., theophylline): The effectiveness of these drugs might be reduced by montelukast.
  • Other cold and flu medicines: Should not be combined with MONTEMAC LKID.

What precautions should be taken while using MONTEMAC LKID?

Several precautions should be observed when administering MONTEMAC LKID:

  • Do not use if your child has a known allergy to levocetirizine, montelukast, or any other components of the tablet.
  • Exercise caution in children with pre-existing kidney or liver conditions, as dose adjustments may be necessary.
  • Monitor your child for any unusual behavior or mood changes, and report such symptoms to your doctor immediately.
  • This medicine is not meant to provide relief during an acute asthma attack; a rescue inhaler should be used for such situations.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment, as it can enhance drowsiness and other side effects.
  • If your child experiences drowsiness, avoid activities that require mental alertness.
  • Do not stop the medication abruptly, even if symptoms improve, as this could worsen the condition.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If a dose of MONTEMAC LKID is missed, administer it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not give a double dose to compensate for a missed one. If your child vomits within 30 minutes of taking the tablet, the same dose can be re-administered, unless it is already close to the time for the next scheduled dose.

How should MONTEMAC LKID be stored?

MONTEMAC LKID tablets should be stored in a cool and dry place, protected from direct sunlight. The ideal storage temperature is between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC. Ensure the medicine is kept out of the sight and reach of children.
