TRAVATAN EYE DROP 2.5 ML

TRAVATAN EYE DROP 2.5 ML, manufactured by ALCON LABORATORIES (INDIA) PVT. LTD., is an ophthalmic solution used to manage elevated pressure within the eye.

  • Name:

    • Common Name: Travoprost ophthalmic solution
    • Brand Name: TRAVATAN EYE DROP. (Note: Travatan Z is a formulation with a different preservative system but the same active ingredient).
  • Composition:

    • Active Ingredient: Travoprost 0.004% (40 micrograms/ml).
    • Excipients: May include polyoxyl 40 hydrogenated castor oil, propylene glycol, and a preservative such as polyquaternium-1 (POLYQUAD®) or benzalkonium chloride, depending on the specific formulation.
  • Uses: TRAVATAN EYE DROP is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in adult patients with:

    • Ocular Hypertension.
    • Open-Angle Glaucoma. It works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor (fluid in the eye), thereby lowering eye pressure.
  • Dosage and Administration:

    • The recommended dosage is one drop in the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) once daily.
    • Optimal effect is obtained if the dose is administered in the evening.
    • Do not administer more than once daily, as more frequent administration may decrease the IOP-lowering effect.
    • If using other topical ophthalmic medications, administer them at least 5 minutes apart.
    • Remove contact lenses prior to application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinsertion.
  • Side Effects:

    • Common: Ocular hyperemia (eye redness), eye discomfort, foreign body sensation, eye pain, eye itching, decreased vision, blurred vision, puffy eyelids, headache.
    • Notable/Serious:
      • Gradual and permanent change in eye color, typically an increase in brown pigmentation of the iris.
      • Darkening of periorbital tissue (eyelid skin) and eyelashes, which may be reversible upon discontinuation.
      • Changes in eyelashes, including increased length, thickness, pigmentation, and/or number.
      • Macular edema (swelling in the eye) has been reported with prostaglandin analogues.
      • Bacterial keratitis (corneal infection) associated with dropper tip contamination.
  • Precautions:

    • TRAVATAN should not be used in women who are pregnant or attempting to become pregnant due to potential harmful effects on pregnancy and/or the fetus. Adequate contraceptive measures should be in place for women of childbearing potential.
    • Use with caution in patients with active intraocular inflammation (iritis/uveitis), aphakic patients, or pseudophakic patients with a torn posterior lens capsule, or those with known risk factors for macular edema.
    • Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
    • Patients should be informed about the potential for permanent eye color change and reversible eyelid/eyelash changes.
  • Storage:

    • Store at 2°C to 25°C (36°F to 77°F).
    • Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
    • After opening, refer to the product's packaging for specific instructions on the discard date, which can range from 2 weeks to 4 weeks, or until the expiration date on the bottle for some formulations.
Frequently asked questions

What is TRAVATAN EYE DROP used for?

TRAVATAN EYE DROP is used to lower high pressure inside the eye. This is prescribed for patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. By reducing intraocular pressure, it helps prevent damage to the optic nerve and potential vision loss.

How does TRAVATAN EYE DROP work?

TRAVATAN EYE DROP contains travoprost, which is a synthetic prostaglandin analog. It works by increasing the outflow of natural fluid (aqueous humor) from inside the eye. This increased drainage helps to reduce the pressure within the eye.

What is the usual dosage of TRAVATAN EYE DROP?

The recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, typically in the evening. It is important not to administer the drops more than once a day, as more frequent use of prostaglandin analogs may decrease their intraocular pressure-lowering effect. The reduction in eye pressure usually begins about 2 hours after the first dose, with the maximum effect reached after approximately 12 hours.

What are the possible side effects of TRAVATAN EYE DROP?

Common side effects may include eye redness (ocular hyperemia), eye discomfort, foreign body sensation, eye pain, itching, decreased visual acuity, blurred vision, dry or watery eyes, eyelid crusting, increased eyelash length/thickness/pigmentation, darkening of eyelashes and eyelids, and increased sensitivity to light.

More serious, though less common, side effects can include eye swelling, severe discomfort, crusting or drainage (which could indicate an infection), red/swollen/itchy eyelids, changes in vision, or severe burning/stinging/irritation after application. Additionally, TRAVATAN may gradually and permanently change the color of the iris (the colored part of your eye) by increasing brown pigment. It can also cause darkening of the skin around the eyelids and deepening of the eyelid sulcus.

Is TRAVATAN EYE DROP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

TRAVATAN EYE DROP is generally not recommended during pregnancy or for women who are planning to become pregnant. If you are a woman of childbearing potential, you must use adequate contraceptive measures while using this medication. It is also not recommended for use during breastfeeding, as it is unknown if the drug or its metabolites pass into human milk, although animal studies have shown excretion. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Can TRAVATAN EYE DROP be taken with other medications?

Yes, TRAVATAN EYE DROP can be used along with other topical ophthalmic medications to lower intraocular pressure. However, if you are using more than one type of eye drop, you should administer them at least 5 minutes apart. It's important to note that the combined use of two or more ophthalmic prostaglandin analogs may actually decrease the IOP-lowering effect or cause paradoxical elevations in eye pressure. There are conflicting reports regarding coadministration with NSAIDs. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all other medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are currently taking.

What precautions should be taken when using TRAVATAN EYE DROP?

  • Contact Lenses: If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Contamination: To prevent contamination and potential eye infection, avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye, eyelids, hands, or any other surface.
  • Blurred Vision: TRAVATAN EYE DROP may cause temporary blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision has cleared.
  • Eye Conditions: Use with caution if you have active intraocular inflammation (such as iritis or uveitis) or known risk factors for macular edema (swelling at the back of the eye).
  • Skin Contact: Avoid direct skin contact with the solution, especially if you are pregnant or attempting to become pregnant, as travoprost can be absorbed through the skin.
  • Treatment Discontinuation: Do not stop using the medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor.
  • Monitoring: Regular eye check-ups are recommended to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment and check for any side effects.

What happens if a dose of TRAVATAN EYE DROP is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should TRAVATAN EYE DROP be stored?

Store TRAVATAN EYE DROP in a cool, dry place at room temperature, typically below 25°C or 30°C, away from direct light and moisture. Do not freeze the drops. It is crucial to discard each bottle 4 weeks after opening to prevent contamination and the risk of eye infection. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use and out of reach of children.
