Description

WEGOVY® FlexTouch 0.25 mg Solution for Injection

Name

  • Brand Name: WEGOVY® FlexTouch
  • Common Name: Semaglutide

Composition

WEGOVY® FlexTouch 0.25 mg contains 0.25 mg of semaglutide per dose in a pre-filled pen. Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist.

Uses

WEGOVY® is prescribed as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for:

  • Weight Management: For adults and adolescents (12 years and older) with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m² for adults, or ≥ 95th percentile for age and sex for children) or overweight (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m² for adults) with at least one weight-related comorbidity (e.g., hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia).
  • Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: To lower the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (like heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death) in adults with established cardiovascular disease who are overweight or obese.
  • Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH): Approved under accelerated approval for this liver disease in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis.

Dosage and Administration

WEGOVY® is administered as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. The 0.25 mg dose is the starting dose in a gradual escalation schedule designed to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.

  • Initiation: 0.25 mg once weekly for the first 4 weeks.
  • Escalation: The dose is typically increased every 4 weeks under medical supervision until a maintenance dose of 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg once weekly is reached.
  • Administration: Inject into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites each week. Each pre-filled pen is for a single dose.

Side Effects

  • Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, fatigue, dyspepsia (upset stomach), dizziness, bloating, belching, and gas. These are often mild and tend to decrease over time as the body adjusts to the medication.
  • Serious Side Effects: Pancreatitis (severe stomach pain), gallbladder problems (e.g., gallstones), severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis, angioedema), increased heart rate, low blood sugar (especially in diabetic patients taking insulin or sulfonylureas), vision changes (worsening of diabetic retinopathy), and kidney problems due to dehydration.

Precautions

  • Thyroid C-Cell Tumors: Semaglutide has caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents; it is unknown if it causes such tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in humans. Contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of MTC or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • Pancreatitis: Discontinue if pancreatitis is suspected.
  • Gallbladder Problems: Monitor for symptoms of gallstones or cholecystitis.
  • Hypoglycemia: Increased risk when used with insulin or sulfonylureas; dose adjustments may be necessary.
  • Dehydration: Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea can lead to dehydration, potentially causing kidney damage. Ensure adequate fluid intake.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended during pregnancy and for at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Use caution during breastfeeding.
  • Interactions: Can slow gastric emptying and affect the absorption of other oral medications.

Storage

Store WEGOVY® pens in the refrigerator between 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze. Protect from light by keeping the pen cap on and storing in the original carton. If needed, an unopened pen can be kept at room temperature (8°C to 30°C or 46°F to 86°F) for up to 28 days (single-use pen) or 8 weeks (multi-use pen), but always check specific product instructions. Discard after this period or if frozen.

Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about WEGOVY FLXT 0.25MG:

What is WEGOVY FLXT 0.25MG used for?

WEGOVY (semaglutide) is an injectable prescription medicine primarily used for chronic weight management in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older with obesity, or overweight adults with at least one weight-related comorbidity (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol). It is used as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Additionally, it is approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events (like heart attack or stroke) in adults with established cardiovascular disease and either obesity or overweight. It may also be used to treat metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a liver disease.

How does WEGOVY FLXT 0.25MG work?

WEGOVY contains semaglutide, which mimics a natural hormone in the body called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). It works by making you feel fuller and less hungry, and it slows down how quickly food moves through your stomach. This mechanism helps reduce appetite and food cravings, making it easier to eat less and contribute to weight loss.

What is the usual dosage of WEGOVY FLXT 0.25MG?

The starting dose for WEGOVY is typically 0.25 mg, administered as a once-weekly injection. The dose is gradually increased every four weeks over a 16-week period until a maintenance dose of either 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg once weekly is reached. This gradual increase is crucial to help minimize potential gastrointestinal side effects.

What are the possible side effects of WEGOVY FLXT 0.25MG?

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, fatigue, indigestion, bloating, and dizziness. More serious, though less common, side effects can include pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), gallbladder problems (such as gallstones), kidney problems (due to dehydration), increased heart rate, and allergic reactions. There is also a boxed warning regarding the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, observed in rodent studies, though it's unknown if this risk applies to humans.

Is WEGOVY FLXT 0.25MG safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

WEGOVY is not recommended for use during pregnancy. If you wish to become pregnant or if pregnancy occurs, semaglutide should be discontinued, ideally at least two months before a planned pregnancy due to its long half-life. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding, as a risk to a breast-fed child cannot be excluded.

Can WEGOVY FLXT 0.25MG be taken with other medications?

Caution is advised when taking WEGOVY with certain medications. If taken with insulin or sulfonylurea drugs (for diabetes), there is an increased risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), and your doctor may need to adjust the dosage of these other medications. WEGOVY can also slow down gastric emptying, potentially affecting the absorption and effectiveness of oral medications. It should not be used with other semaglutide-containing products or any other GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines.

What precautions should be taken while using WEGOVY FLXT 0.25MG?

Before starting WEGOVY, inform your doctor about any medical conditions, especially a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), as WEGOVY is contraindicated in these cases. Discuss any history of pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, kidney problems, or diabetic retinopathy. You should also inform your doctor if you are scheduled for any surgeries. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is important, particularly if you are also taking other diabetes medications.

What happens if a dose of WEGOVY FLXT 0.25MG is missed?

If you miss a dose and your next scheduled dose is more than two days (48 hours) away, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if your next dose is less than two days (48 hours) away, you should skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regularly scheduled time. Never take two doses at once to make up for a missed one. If you miss multiple doses (e.g., two or more weeks), consult your healthcare professional on how to restart your treatment.

How should WEGOVY FLXT 0.25MG be stored?

WEGOVY pens should be stored in their original carton in the refrigerator, at temperatures between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and 46°F). Do not freeze the pens. If necessary, a pen can be stored at room temperature (8°C to 30°C or 46°F to 86°F) for up to 28 days, but it cannot be refrigerated again after being stored at room temperature.
