Description
MAHAFLOX EYE OINTMENT
MAHAFLOX EYE OINTMENT, manufactured by Mankind Pharmaceuticals Ltd., is an ophthalmic antibiotic primarily used for treating bacterial infections of the eye.
Composition
- Active Ingredient: Moxifloxacin 0.5% w/w
Uses MAHAFLOX EYE OINTMENT is prescribed for the treatment of external bacterial infections of the eye. This includes conditions such as:
- Bacterial conjunctivitis (commonly known as "pink eye").
- Corneal ulcers caused by bacteria. It works by inhibiting the growth and multiplication of bacteria responsible for the infection, helping to alleviate symptoms like pain, redness, itching, and soreness. It is not effective against viral infections.
Dosage and Administration
- MAHAFLOX EYE OINTMENT is for external ophthalmic use only.
- Use as directed by your doctor, following the prescribed dose and duration.
- Wash hands thoroughly before and after applying the ointment.
- Gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the tube close to the eye without touching it to prevent contamination, and squeeze a thin coating of the ointment inside the lower eyelid.
- Avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye or any other surface.
- Complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is completely cured and to prevent re-infection.
- If using other eye medications, wait at least five minutes between applications.
Side Effects Common side effects may include:
- Temporary eye discomfort, burning, or stinging sensation upon application.
- Dry eyes, watery eyes.
- Eye pain, redness, itching, and irritation.
- Blurred vision (temporary). These side effects are usually mild and temporary. If they persist or worsen, consult your doctor. Serious allergic reactions are rare but require immediate medical attention, with symptoms such as severe itching, swelling of the face or throat, rash, or trouble breathing.
Precautions
- Allergy: Do not use if you are allergic to moxifloxacin, other fluoroquinolone antibiotics, or any other ingredients in the ointment.
- Contact Lenses: Avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment and until the infection is fully healed, as bacteria can adhere to lenses and worsen the infection.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Caution is advised, as animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby, and information for breastfeeding is limited.
- Driving and Operating Machinery: MAHAFLOX EYE OINTMENT may cause temporary blurred vision, dizziness, or light-headedness after application. Avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision is clear.
- Prolonged Use: Using the ointment for longer than necessary can lead to resistant infections or fungal infections.
- Children: Not recommended for children under 1 year of age unless specifically advised by a doctor.
- Medical History: Inform your doctor about any history of eye surgery, dry eye syndrome, or corneal problems.
Storage
- Store at room temperature, ideally between 15°C to 25°C or below 30°C, in a cool and dry place.
- Keep the ointment tube tightly closed when not in use.
- Protect from excessive heat, light, and moisture.
- Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
Frequently asked questions
Mahaflox Eye Ointment, manufactured by Mankind - Gravitas Div, is an antibiotic eye ointment containing moxifloxacin (0.5% w/w) used to treat bacterial eye infections.
What is Mahaflox Eye Ointment used for?
Mahaflox Eye Ointment is primarily used to treat bacterial eye infections, such as bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and corneal ulcers. It helps reduce symptoms like redness, swelling, discomfort, pain, itching, and discharge. It can also be used for post-surgical prophylaxis to prevent bacterial infections after eye surgeries.
How does Mahaflox Eye Ointment work?
Mahaflox Eye Ointment contains moxifloxacin, a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by inhibiting essential bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are crucial for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. By blocking these enzymes, moxifloxacin disrupts bacterial DNA synthesis, preventing bacterial growth and ultimately leading to the death of the bacterial cells, thereby clearing the infection.
What is the usual dosage of Mahaflox Eye Ointment?
The dosage of Mahaflox Eye Ointment should be strictly as prescribed by your doctor. It is for external use only. Generally, a thin coating of the ointment is applied to the affected eye(s). It is vital to adhere to the prescribed dosage and complete the entire course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cured and to prevent recurrence or the development of antibiotic resistance.
What are the possible side effects of Mahaflox Eye Ointment?
Common side effects may include ocular discomfort, dry eye, decreased visual acuity, inflammation of the cornea, itchiness, burning sensation in the eye, eye pain, and temporary blurred vision immediately following application. These are usually mild and temporary. More serious side effects, though rare, can include severe allergic reactions such as trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, rash, itching, or hives, which require immediate medical attention.
Is Mahaflox Eye Ointment safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Caution is advised while applying Mahaflox Eye Ointment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. For pregnant women, it may be unsafe, as animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby, though human studies are limited. It should only be used if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk, and always under a doctor's supervision. For nursing mothers, it's advisable to exercise caution and consult your doctor, as there is a potential risk of the drug passing into breast milk and potentially harming the baby.
Can Mahaflox Eye Ointment be taken with other medications?
No specific medication interaction studies have been conducted for Mahaflox Eye Ointment. However, general caution should be exercised when using it with other medications. If you are using other eye medicines, wait for at least five minutes between each application. It is advised to inform your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements you are taking. Caution is advised with drugs that prolong the QT interval, and metal cations (like magnesium, aluminum, iron, and zinc) can inhibit the absorption of quinolones.
What precautions should be taken when using Mahaflox Eye Ointment?
Do not use Mahaflox Eye Ointment if you are allergic to moxifloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any of its ingredients. To prevent contamination, wash your hands thoroughly before applying and avoid touching the tube tip to any surface, including your eye. Do not wear contact lenses during the treatment period and until your infection is fully healed, as bacteria can stick to lenses and worsen the infection. Mahaflox Eye Ointment may cause temporary blurred vision, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until your vision is clear. Always complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve early. Use with caution in children under 1 year and elderly patients over 65 years. Discuss any pre-existing conditions like kidney or liver problems, or fungal eye infections with your doctor.
What happens if a dose of Mahaflox Eye Ointment is missed?
If you forget to apply Mahaflox Eye Ointment as instructed, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled application, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should Mahaflox Eye Ointment be stored?
Mahaflox Eye Ointment should be stored below 30°C, in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets. Ensure the tube is tightly closed when not in use.
