Description

TERBICIP TABLET is an antifungal medication manufactured by Cipla Health Limited, primarily used to treat various fungal infections of the skin and nails.

Name

  • Brand Name: TERBICIP TABLET
  • Common Name: Terbinafine (as Terbinafine Hydrochloride)

Composition

Each TERBICIP Tablet contains Terbinafine Hydrochloride, equivalent to 250 mg of Terbinafine.

Uses

TERBICIP TABLET is prescribed for the treatment of a range of fungal infections, including:

  • Fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails (onychomycosis).
  • Ringworm infections (tinea corporis, tinea cruris, and tinea pedis).
  • Fungal infections of the scalp (tinea capitis), particularly in children.
  • Yeast infections of the skin caused by the genus Candida, where oral therapy is deemed appropriate due to the severity or extent of the infection.

Dosage and Administration

Typically, one TERBICIP Tablet is taken once a day. The duration of treatment varies based on the type and severity of the infection. For fingernail infections, treatment may last 6 weeks, while toenail infections usually require 12 weeks. Skin infections like tinea pedis, tinea corporis, and tinea cruris may require 2 to 6 weeks of treatment. The tablet can be taken with or without food and should be swallowed whole.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects: Headache, diarrhoea, rash, upset stomach (dyspepsia), abnormal liver function tests, itching, nausea, abdominal pain, gas (flatulence), and taste disturbance or loss of taste. Taste disturbances can be severe and prolonged.

Serious Side Effects: Liver problems (which can be severe and lead to liver transplant or death), low white blood cell count (especially neutrophils), serious skin or allergic reactions (including Stevens-Johnson syndrome), and blood clotting problems.

Precautions

  • Liver Disease: TERBICIP Tablets are contraindicated in patients with chronic or active liver disease. Liver function should be evaluated before and during treatment.
  • Kidney Impairment: Use with caution in patients with kidney disease; not recommended for those with creatinine clearance less than 50 mL/min.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase the risk of liver damage.
  • Sun Exposure: Terbinafine can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight; protective clothing and sunscreen are advised.
  • Drug Interactions: May interact with antidepressants (e.g., desipramine), other antifungals (e.g., fluconazole), cimetidine, ciclosporin, and warfarin.
  • Caffeine: TERBICIP can decrease caffeine metabolism, potentially increasing caffeine levels and related side effects.
  • Lupus: Caution is advised for patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), as the medicine may worsen the condition.

Storage

Store TERBICIP Tablets below 25°C or at room temperature (15-30°C), protected from light and dampness. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

TERBICIP Tablet is an antifungal medication primarily used to treat various fungal infections of the skin and nails. It contains terbinafine as its active ingredient.

What is TERBICIP Tablet used for?

TERBICIP Tablet is used to treat a range of fungal infections, including fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails (onychomycosis), ringworm (tinea corporis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and scalp ringworm (tinea capitis).

How does TERBICIP Tablet work?

TERBICIP Tablet works by inhibiting an enzyme called squalene epoxidase within the fungal cells. This enzyme is crucial for the production of ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane. By blocking its production, terbinafine causes a deficiency in ergosterol and an accumulation of squalene, leading to damage of the fungal cell membrane and ultimately killing the fungus.

What is the usual dosage of TERBICIP Tablet?

The typical dosage for adults is one TERBICIP 250 mg tablet once a day. The duration of treatment varies depending on the type and severity of the infection:

  • Skin infections (e.g., athlete's foot, ringworm, jock itch): 2 to 6 weeks.
  • Fingernail infections: around 6 weeks.
  • Toenail infections: typically 12 weeks, but some cases may require longer treatment. TERBICIP Tablet can be taken with or without food.

What are the possible side effects of TERBICIP Tablet?

Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, rash, itching, indigestion, and changes in or loss of taste. Serious, though rare, side effects can include severe liver problems (symptoms like yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or severe stomach pain), serious skin reactions (such as rash with fever or blistering), and blood dyscrasias. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Is TERBICIP Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

TERBICIP Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless the potential benefits clearly outweigh the potential risks, as there is limited clinical experience in pregnant women and animal studies have shown potential harmful effects. It is excreted into breast milk, therefore mothers receiving oral treatment with TERBICIP Tablet should not breastfeed. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Can TERBICIP Tablet be taken with other medications?

TERBICIP Tablet can interact with other medications. For instance, cimetidine may increase the plasma concentration of terbinafine, while rifampicin may decrease it. It can also interact with certain antidepressants (e.g., desipramine), ciclosporin, and blood-thinning medicines like warfarin. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other prescription and over-the-counter medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using TERBICIP Tablet?

  • Liver Disease: TERBICIP Tablet is contraindicated in patients with chronic or active liver disease. Your doctor will likely perform blood tests to monitor your liver function before and during treatment.
  • Kidney Disease: Use with caution in patients with kidney problems, as the medicine is filtered by the kidneys. It is not recommended for severe renal impairment.
  • Sun Sensitivity: This medicine can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. It's advisable to limit sun exposure and use protective clothing and sunscreen when outdoors.
  • Taste/Smell Disturbance: Taste or smell disturbances, including loss, have been reported and can sometimes be prolonged or even permanent. If these symptoms are severe, treatment should be discontinued.
  • Alcohol: Avoid or limit alcohol consumption during treatment, as it may increase the risk of liver damage.
  • Psoriasis/Lupus: Use with caution in patients with pre-existing psoriasis or lupus, as exacerbations have been reported.

What happens if a dose of TERBICIP Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of TERBICIP Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is less than 4 hours before your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should TERBICIP Tablet be stored?

TERBICIP Tablet should be stored below 25°C (or between 15-30°C), protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
