Frequently asked questions
What is Perlice Cream used for?
Perlice Cream, which contains permethrin, is primarily used to treat infestations of scabies and head lice. Scabies is a skin condition caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching and a rash. Head lice are small insects that infest the scalp and hair, causing itchiness and discomfort. It can also be used to manage other parasitic infections.
How does Perlice Cream work?
Perlice Cream's active ingredient, permethrin, is a synthetic pyrethroid pesticide. It works by targeting and disrupting the nervous system of mites and lice, causing paralysis and ultimately killing them and their eggs (nits). Permethrin is poorly absorbed through the skin, with less than 0.5% absorbed during the first 48 hours, and rapidly metabolized to inactive compounds that are excreted in urine.
What is the usual dosage and application?
For treating scabies, adults and children over 2 months of age should thoroughly massage the cream into all skin surfaces from the head to the soles of the feet. This includes areas like between fingers and toes, under fingernails, and in skin folds. For infants and elderly patients, the hairline, neck, temples, and forehead should also be treated. The cream should be left on for 8 to 14 hours, then washed off by bathing or showering. A single application is often sufficient, but a second treatment may be necessary if live mites are observed 14 days or more after the initial application.
For treating head lice, for adults and children 2 months of age and older, the cream (often a 1% formulation) is typically applied to shampooed, towel-dried hair and scalp, ensuring saturation, especially behind the ears and on the nape of the neck. It is usually left on for 10 minutes, then rinsed off. A fine-toothed comb should be used to remove dead lice and nits. Reapplication may be needed after 7 days if live lice are still present.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Perlice Cream may include mild burning, stinging, itching, redness, dryness, or a mild rash at the application site. It's not uncommon for itching and rash to persist for 2 to 4 weeks after treatment, which is usually a temporary reaction to the dead mites and does not mean the treatment failed. Severe allergic reactions, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, are rare but require immediate medical attention.
Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Permethrin is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It has low systemic absorption, meaning very little of the medication enters the bloodstream, and it is rapidly metabolized. The CDC and other guidelines recommend permethrin as a first-choice treatment for scabies and lice in pregnant and lactating women. However, it is always advisable to consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding. If breastfeeding, the cream should be removed from the nipple area before feeding and reapplied afterward.
Can it be taken with other medications?
Interactions with other orally taken or injected medications are generally not expected with topical permethrin. However, it is recommended to avoid using other skin products on the affected area without consulting a healthcare provider. Corticosteroids (steroids) should not be used to treat skin conditions like eczema concurrently with permethrin cream for scabies or lice, as they may worsen the infestation.
What precautions should be taken?
Perlice Cream is for external use only; do not swallow it. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, or other mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with plenty of cool water. It may worsen symptoms of asthma or eczema. If you are allergic to permethrin, chrysanthemums, or other pyrethroids, you should not use this cream. Children under 2 months of age should only be treated under close medical supervision. Carers applying the cream should wear gloves. Also, avoid smoking or going near naked flames as fabric in contact with the product can burn more easily.
What happens if a dose is missed?
Since Perlice Cream is typically a single or two-application treatment, the concept of a "missed dose" as with daily medications usually doesn't apply. If you forget to apply it as directed, apply it as soon as you remember. However, do not apply a double quantity to make up for a forgotten application. If live mites are still observed after the recommended interval (e.g., 14 days for scabies, 7 days for head lice), consult your doctor, as a repeat treatment might be necessary.
How should it be stored?
Perlice Cream should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and kept out of the reach of children. It is generally advised to store it below 30°C. Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain; consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for proper disposal of expired or unused product.
