FAROBACT 200 MG TABLET

  • Name: Farobact 200 mg Tablet (Brand Name)

  • Composition: Each film-coated tablet contains Faropenem Sodium equivalent to Faropenem 200 mg. Faropenem is a penem antibiotic.

  • Uses: FAROBACT 200 MG TABLET is a broad-spectrum antibiotic prescribed for various bacterial infections. It is effective against:

    • Respiratory tract infections (e.g., acute bronchitis, pneumonia).
    • Urinary tract infections.
    • Skin and skin structure infections (e.g., cellulitis).
    • Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) infections.
    • Gynaecological infections.
  • Dosage and Administration:

    • Typically, the recommended dose for Faropenem is 200 mg, taken two to three times a day (t.i.d.).
    • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew.
    • It can be taken with or without food.
    • It is crucial to complete the entire prescribed course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to prevent antibiotic resistance and recurrence of infection.
    • The exact dosage and duration depend on the severity of the infection, clinical response, and patient's age.
  • Side Effects:

    • Common: Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain or abdominal pain, and rash. These side effects are usually mild and resolve on their own.
    • Other reported side effects include vomiting, gastritis, constipation, lack of appetite, dizziness, drowsiness, edema, muscle pain, and lethargy.
    • Consult a doctor if side effects persist or worsen.
  • Precautions:

    • Allergies: Inform your doctor if you have a known allergy to Faropenem, penicillins, cephalosporins, or carbapenem drugs, due to the risk of anaphylactic shock.
    • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Caution is advised. Consult a doctor, as the medicine should only be given if the benefits outweigh the risks. Faropenem is excreted in human milk.
    • Kidney and Liver Issues: Administer with caution in patients with renal insufficiency or liver health issues; dose adjustments and monitoring may be necessary.
    • Gastrointestinal Issues: Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal diseases like colitis, as antibiotics can cause inflammation of the colon. Report severe stomach pain with diarrhoea or blood in stools immediately.
    • Vitamin Deficiencies: Farobact may cause vitamin K or vitamin B deficiency, especially in elderly individuals or those with poor oral intake. Monitor for symptoms like easy bleeding, loss of appetite, tongue swelling, or stomatitis.
    • Genetic Conditions: Not recommended for individuals with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption, as it contains lactose.
    • Elderly Patients: Use with caution in the elderly due to increased susceptibility to side effects.
    • Dizziness: May cause dizziness; avoid activities requiring high mental alertness like driving or operating machinery if affected.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, ideally below 25°C or below 30°C. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

FAROBACT 200 MG TABLET (10 TAB) by CIPLA LTD.

What is Farobact 200 mg Tablet used for?

Farobact 200 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum antibiotic primarily used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. These include respiratory tract infections (like pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, and ENT infections), urinary tract infections (UTIs), skin and soft tissue infections, and gynaecological infections (such as pelvic inflammatory disease). It is only effective against bacterial infections, not viral or fungal ones.

How does Farobact 200 mg Tablet work?

Farobact 200 mg Tablet contains Faropenem, an antibiotic that belongs to the penem group. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, which are crucial for bacterial growth and survival. By blocking enzymes called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), Faropenem disrupts the formation of the cell wall, ultimately leading to the death of the bacteria and controlling the infection.

What is the usual dosage for Farobact 200 mg Tablet?

The typical dosage can vary, but it is often prescribed as 200 mg taken once or twice a day. Some recommendations suggest 200 mg three times a day (t.i.d.). It can be taken with or without food. You should swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water and not crush, chew, or break it. The exact dosage and duration of treatment will depend on the severity of your infection, your response to the medication, and your doctor's assessment. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if you start feeling better, to prevent the infection from returning and to avoid antibiotic resistance.

What are the possible side effects of Farobact 200 mg Tablet?

Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, loose bowel movements, rash, and vomiting. Less common or more severe side effects can include allergic reactions (including a risk of anaphylactic shock), gastritis, constipation, lack of appetite, edema, muscle pain, lethargy, and symptoms of vitamin K or B-group deficiency (such as easy bleeding, tongue inflammation, or mouth sores). If diarrhea persists or becomes severe, or if you notice blood or mucus in your stools, contact your doctor immediately.

Is Farobact 200 mg Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: The safety of Farobact 200 mg Tablet during pregnancy has not been established. It should only be used if clearly necessary and if the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks. Always consult your healthcare provider before taking this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Breastfeeding: Faropenem, the active ingredient, is excreted in human milk. Therefore, it is generally not recommended for breastfeeding mothers unless absolutely necessary and if the doctor determines that the benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risks to the infant. Consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

Can Farobact 200 mg Tablet be taken with other medications?

It is important to inform your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are currently taking to avoid potential drug interactions. Farobact 200 mg Tablet may interact with certain medicines. For example, Probenecid can increase the levels of Faropenem in the blood. Concomitant use with Valproic Acid (used for seizures) may reduce its effectiveness and increase the risk of seizures. The combination of Imipenem and Cilastatin sodium can also increase Faropenem concentration. Additionally, Furosemide (a diuretic) may increase the risk of kidney toxicity when taken with Farobact.

What precautions should be taken while using Farobact 200 mg Tablet?

Before taking Farobact 200 mg Tablet, inform your doctor if you have a history of allergies to other antibiotics (like penicillin, cephalosporins, or carbapenems) due to the risk of severe allergic reactions. Caution is advised if you have kidney or liver problems, as dosage adjustments or careful monitoring may be necessary. Patients with gastrointestinal diseases, especially colitis, should use this medicine with caution. If you have poor oral intake or general weakness, your doctor may monitor you for vitamin K deficiency. Avoid alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of side effects. This medicine is not generally recommended for children under 18 years of age due to a lack of safety data. If you experience dizziness, avoid driving or operating machinery.

What happens if a dose of Farobact 200 mg Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of Farobact 200 mg Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should Farobact 200 mg Tablet be stored?

Farobact 200 mg Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, ideally below 25°C or 30°C. Protect it from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the medicine in its original container and ensure it is out of the reach of children and pets. Always check the expiry date on the packaging and do not use the medicine beyond this date.
