Frequently asked questions

Asthalin AX Syrup, manufactured by Cipla Ltd., is a combination medication primarily used to treat cough associated with mucus and various respiratory conditions. It contains three active ingredients: Levosalbutamol, Ambroxol, and Guaifenesin, which work together to relieve symptoms such as chest congestion, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.

What is Asthalin AX Syrup used for?

Asthalin AX Syrup is used to treat cough with mucus, chest congestion, and breathing difficulties caused by respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, asthma, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It is also effective in alleviating allergy symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes.

How does Asthalin AX Syrup work?

Asthalin AX Syrup combines three active ingredients:

  • Levosalbutamol: A bronchodilator that relaxes muscles and widens the airways of the lungs, making breathing easier.
  • Ambroxol: A mucolytic agent that thins and loosens mucus (phlegm) in the lungs, windpipe, and nose, making it easier to cough out.
  • Guaifenesin: An expectorant that increases the volume and reduces the thickness and stickiness of respiratory tract mucus, promoting its removal through coughing. Together, these ingredients help to clear airways, ease breathing, and reduce coughing frequency.

What is the usual dosage for Asthalin AX Syrup?

The dosage of Asthalin AX Syrup should be taken as prescribed by your doctor, as it depends on the severity of your condition and response to treatment. For adults, a common dosage is 5-10 mL thrice daily. For pediatric patients aged 6-12 years, 5 mL thrice daily is often prescribed. It can be taken with or without food. It is crucial to use a measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing and to shake the bottle well before each use.

What are the possible side effects of Asthalin AX Syrup?

Common side effects may include nausea, dryness of mouth, nose, or throat, headache, dizziness, muscle cramps or weakness, stomach pain, vomiting, skin rash, tremor, and increased heart rate. Most side effects are temporary and resolve over time. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is Asthalin AX Syrup safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Asthalin AX Syrup should be used with caution during pregnancy, and it is generally advised to avoid it due to a lack of adequate safety information and potential risks to the fetus. For breastfeeding mothers, it is not known whether the medicine passes into breast milk. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a doctor to discuss potential risks and benefits before use.

Can Asthalin AX Syrup be taken with other medications?

Yes, Asthalin AX Syrup can interact with certain medications. For example, beta-blockers (like atenolol and propranolol) may reduce the effectiveness of levosalbutamol. Diuretics (like furosemide) might increase potassium levels in the body, and cardiac glycosides (like digoxin) could increase the risk of side effects like irregular heartbeat. It's important to inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking to avoid potential drug interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using Asthalin AX Syrup?

Exercise caution if you have underlying conditions such as stomach ulcers, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, or hyperthyroidism. This syrup contains sugar, so diabetic patients should monitor their blood sugar levels regularly. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience drowsiness or dizziness. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase drowsiness. Do not use if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. It is not recommended for children under 6 years of age.

What happens if a dose of Asthalin AX Syrup is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should Asthalin AX Syrup be stored?

Store Asthalin AX Syrup at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Ensure the bottle is tightly closed when not in use. Always keep this medicine out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use the medicine after its expiry date.
