Frequently asked questions
What is Pegalup Oral Solution used for?
Pegalup Oral Solution is primarily used to manage long-standing constipation and treat faecal impaction (severe constipation). It is also prescribed for bowel preparation before medical procedures such as a colonoscopy or barium enema. Additionally, it helps in supporting digestive metabolism and alleviating bloating.
How does Pegalup Oral Solution work?
Pegalup Oral Solution is an osmotic laxative containing Polyethylene glycol, Potassium chloride, Sodium chloride, and Sodium hydrogen carbonate. Polyethylene glycol draws water into the intestines, increasing the volume and softening the stool, which facilitates easier bowel movements. The included salts help maintain the body's electrolyte and water balance. It works gently over 24-48 hours and is not absorbed into the bloodstream.
What is the usual dosage for Pegalup Oral Solution?
The typical dosage for adults, adolescents, and the elderly is generally one sachet (or 25 ml of solution) mixed with 100-125 ml of water, taken 1 to 3 times daily, as per individual response or as advised by your physician. For children aged 2-6 years, the usual starting dose is 12.5 ml of solution diluted in 50 ml of water daily, and for children aged 7-11 years, it's 25 ml diluted in 100 ml of water daily. It is crucial to dilute the solution before consumption and follow your doctor's specific instructions, as the dose and duration depend on age, body weight, and the condition being treated.
What are the possible side effects of Pegalup Oral Solution?
Common side effects include stomach ache, cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, stomach rumbles, gas problems in the gut, and abdominal discomfort. Less common side effects may include itching, headache, or swollen hands, feet, or ankles. If any of these conditions worsen, it is advisable to contact your doctor.
Is Pegalup Oral Solution safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: Pegalup Oral Solution should be used with caution during pregnancy and only if clinically needed, with benefits outweighing the risks. Consult your doctor before taking it. Breastfeeding: It should also be used with caution during breastfeeding. While generally considered safe, it is advised to consult your doctor before use.
Can Pegalup Oral Solution be taken with other medications?
It is important to inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking, as some may interact with Pegalup Oral Solution. To prevent affecting the absorption of other medications, it is generally recommended to take Pegalup Oral Solution at least 2 hours before or after other medicines. Particular care should be taken if you are on anti-epileptic medications like sodium valproate or carbamazepine.
What precautions should be taken when using Pegalup Oral Solution?
Pegalup Oral Solution is not recommended if you are allergic to any of its ingredients (polyethylene glycol, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, or sodium hydrogen carbonate) or if you have a gut obstruction, perforated gut wall, or severe inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, toxic megacolon, or ileus. It should be used with caution in patients with hepatic encephalopathy, renal impairment, or impaired heart function. While dosages are provided for children as young as 2 years old, general recommendations often state it's not recommended for children under 12 without specific medical advice. Elderly patients (above 65 years) should use it with caution. It is important to drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication to prevent dehydration. Inform your doctor if you are on a low-salt diet or have conditions like Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis. Limiting alcohol consumption is also advisable.
What happens if a dose of Pegalup Oral Solution is missed?
If you miss a dose of Pegalup Oral Solution, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
How should Pegalup Oral Solution be stored?
Pegalup Oral Solution should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, preferably at room temperature (20-25°C or below 30°C). Keep it in its original packaging and out of the reach and sight of children and pets.
