Description

AZOPT EYE DROP 5 ML is an ophthalmic suspension manufactured by ALCON LABORATORIES (INDIA) PVT. LTD..

  • Name

    • Brand Name: AZOPT
    • Common Name: Brinzolamide ophthalmic suspension
  • Composition

    • Active Ingredient: Brinzolamide 1% (10 mg/mL)
    • Inactive Ingredients: Contains benzalkonium chloride (as a preservative), mannitol, carbomer, sodium chloride, tyloxapol, disodium edetate, sodium hydroxide and/or hydrochloric acid (for pH adjustment), and purified water.
  • Uses AZOPT Eye Drops are prescribed to decrease elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in adults diagnosed with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. It works by inhibiting carbonic anhydrase, an enzyme that reduces the production of fluid within the eye, thereby lowering eye pressure and helping to prevent damage to the optic nerve and potential vision loss. It can be used as monotherapy or as an adjunctive therapy to beta-blockers.

  • Dosage and Administration The typical dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily (e.g., morning and evening). Some patients may benefit from one drop three times a day, as directed by a healthcare professional.

    • Shake the bottle well before each use.
    • Wash hands thoroughly before application.
    • To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface.
    • If using other ophthalmic medications, administer them at least 5 to 10 minutes apart, with eye ointments applied last.
    • Remove soft contact lenses before instilling the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Side Effects

    • Common Side Effects (5-10% incidence): Blurred vision, bitter/sour/unusual taste in the mouth.
    • Other Common Side Effects (1-5% incidence): Dry eye, eye discomfort, itching, redness, foreign body sensation, headache, blepharitis (eyelid inflammation), ocular discharge, keratitis, dermatitis, and rhinitis.
    • Serious Side Effects (rare): Signs of allergic reaction (e.g., shortness of breath, wheezing, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, rash, itching, hives), severe skin reactions (blistering, peeling), eye pain or swelling, sensitivity to light, signs of eye infection, upper right-sided stomach pain, jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes), or dark urine. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
  • Precautions

    • Contact Lenses: The preservative (benzalkonium chloride) can be absorbed by and discolour soft contact lenses. Lenses must be removed before application and can be reinserted after 15 minutes.
    • Driving/Operating Machinery: May cause temporary blurred vision or other visual disturbances. Patients should wait until vision clears before driving or operating machinery.
    • Systemic Absorption: Although topical, systemic absorption can occur, leading to sulfonamide-like adverse reactions. Discontinue use if serious reactions or hypersensitivity develop.
    • Specific Conditions: Not recommended for patients with severe kidney impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min), hyperchloraemia, hepatic impairment, or for use in children under 18 years. It has not been studied in acute angle-closure glaucoma.
    • Drug Interactions: Concomitant use with oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors is not recommended due to potential additive systemic effects.
  • Storage Store AZOPT Eye Drops at room temperature, between 4°C to 30°C (39°F to 86°F). Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Discard the bottle 4 weeks after opening to prevent contamination.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions about AZOPT EYE DROP 5 ML

What is AZOPT EYE DROP used for?

AZOPT EYE DROP (brinzolamide) is used to treat high pressure inside the eye, which can be caused by open-angle glaucoma or other eye diseases like ocular hypertension. Lowering this pressure helps to prevent vision loss and blindness.

How does AZOPT EYE DROP work?

AZOPT EYE DROP contains brinzolamide, which is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It works by decreasing the production of aqueous humor, the fluid naturally produced within the eye. By reducing this fluid, it lowers the intraocular pressure (IOP).

What is the usual dosage for AZOPT EYE DROP?

The typical recommended dosage for adults is one drop in the affected eye(s) two or three times daily, as directed by your doctor. It's important to shake the bottle well before each use.

What are the possible side effects of AZOPT EYE DROP?

Common side effects can include blurred vision and a bitter, sour, or unusual taste in the mouth. Other possible mild side effects may include eye discomfort, itchiness, dryness, redness, a sensation of something in the eye, headache, and rhinitis (stuffy nose). Serious allergic reactions are rare but possible. If you experience persistent discomfort, eye swelling/pain, nausea/vomiting that doesn't stop, or signs of infection, contact your doctor immediately.

Is AZOPT EYE DROP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

AZOPT is generally not recommended during pregnancy as there are limited data on its use in pregnant women, and animal studies have shown reproductive toxicity with systemic administration. While treating high eye pressure is crucial during pregnancy, it is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

For breastfeeding, it is unknown whether brinzolamide or its metabolites are excreted in human milk after topical ocular administration, so a risk to the nursing child cannot be excluded. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and risks if you are breastfeeding.

Can AZOPT EYE DROP be taken with other medications?

AZOPT EYE DROP can be used with other topical ophthalmic medications, but they should be administered at least 5 to 10 minutes apart. Eye ointments should be administered last.

Concomitant use with oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors is not recommended due to the potential for additive systemic effects. Caution is also advised if you are taking high doses of salicylates (like aspirin), as these can interact with carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.

What precautions should be taken when using AZOPT EYE DROP?

Always wash your hands before applying the drops. Do not touch the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface to avoid contamination. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using AZOPT and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the preservative can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and may cause discoloration or irritation. AZOPT may cause temporary blurred vision, so wait until your vision clears before driving or operating machinery. Inform your doctor about any kidney or liver problems, other eye conditions, or allergies.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should AZOPT EYE DROP be stored?

Store AZOPT EYE DROP below 25°C (77°F) and do not freeze it. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Once opened, the eye drops should generally be used within 28 days to ensure sterility and effectiveness.
