HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet

HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet is a hemostatic medication prescribed to prevent and control abnormal bleeding. It is manufactured by INDOCO-SPERA.

Composition Each tablet contains 250 mg of Ethamsylate, which is the active pharmaceutical ingredient.

Uses HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet is used for various bleeding conditions, including:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) and dysfunctional uterine bleeding.
  • To prevent or reduce bleeding during, before, or after delicate surgeries, such as those involving the urinary system, eyes, nose, or throat.
  • Managing bleeding from small blood vessels (capillaries), nosebleeds (epistaxis), bleeding gums (gingivitis), blood in urine (haematuria), and blood in stools (melena).
  • Preventing intraventricular and periventricular hemorrhages in neonates. Ethamsylate works by increasing platelet adhesion, strengthening capillary walls, and stabilizing blood vessels to reduce blood loss and promote clot formation.

Dosage and Administration For adults, the typical oral dosage is 250-500 mg, three to four times daily, until bleeding stops. For heavy menstrual bleeding, a common regimen is 500 mg four times daily during menstruation, starting when bleeding begins. It can be taken with or without food.

Side Effects Common side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Skin rash
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea and abdominal discomfort/pain
  • Weakness Serious, though rare, side effects can include severe allergic reactions, fever, decreased blood pressure, and blood clots.

Precautions HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to Ethamsylate, porphyria, and fibroids. Caution is advised for patients with liver or kidney issues, low or unstable blood pressure, or bronchial asthma. It is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to limited safety data; consult a doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Inform your healthcare provider about all current medications and pre-existing medical conditions.

Storage Store HEMSYL 250 MG Tablets below 30°C in properly labeled containers.

Frequently asked questions

HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet by INDOCO-SPERA is a medication containing Etamsylate, primarily used to manage and prevent various types of bleeding.

What is HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet used for?

HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet is used to control and reduce abnormal or excessive bleeding. This includes heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), dysfunctional uterine bleeding, and bleeding that may occur before, during, or after delicate surgical procedures involving areas like the urinary system, eyes, nose, or throat. It also helps in reducing bleeding from the nose (epistaxis), gums (gingivitis), urine (hematuria), and stools (melena). Additionally, it can be prescribed for spotting between menstrual periods and prolonged menstrual bleeding, and for the prevention of periventricular hemorrhage in low birth-weight infants.

How does HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet work?

HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet contains Etamsylate, which is an antihemorrhagic (hemostatic) agent. It works by enhancing the ability of blood platelets to stick together, thereby aiding in the formation of blood clots, which is the initial step in stopping bleeding. The medication also restores and improves the resistance of small blood vessels (capillaries), stabilizing their walls and reducing blood loss at the site of bleeding. It may also inhibit the biosynthesis and action of prostaglandin.

What is the usual dosage for HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet?

The dosage of HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet is determined by your doctor based on your age, body weight, and specific medical condition. Generally, the tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and should not be crushed or chewed. It can be taken with or without food, though taking it with meals may help avoid stomach upset. For heavy menstrual bleeding, a common dosage advised is about 500mg four times during menstruation. For post-surgical bleeding in adults, it might be 250-500 mg every four to six hours.

What are the possible side effects of HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet?

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, headache, stomach pain or discomfort, tiredness, body rashes or skin rash, and loose motions or diarrhea. If you experience these, they are usually temporary and may resolve over time. However, if any of these symptoms worsen or persist, you should consult your doctor. More severe but rare side effects can include blood clots in vessels (thromboembolism), increased susceptibility to infections (due to a reduced white blood cell count), a decrease in platelet count, allergic reactions, fever, and a drop in blood pressure.

Is HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet is generally not recommended for use by pregnant or breastfeeding women. It should only be used if your doctor deems it absolutely necessary, after carefully weighing the potential benefits against the risks. It is crucial to inform your doctor about your pregnancy status or if you are breastfeeding before starting this medication.

Can HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet be taken with other medications?

Before taking HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet, it is important to inform your doctor about all other medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, herbal remedies, and dietary supplements. HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet may interact with certain medications, particularly blood-thinning agents.

What precautions should be taken while taking HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet?

You should not take HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet if you are allergic to Etamsylate or any other antihemorrhagic drugs. Caution is advised if you have pre-existing kidney, liver, or heart diseases. It is not recommended for individuals suffering from porphyria (a blood disorder). Inform your doctor if you have a history of blood clotting disorders or conditions that increase the risk of thrombosis, or if you have non-cancerous growths or a blood pigment disorder. The medicine should not be used before the onset of bleeding during periods. Use with caution in children. While there is no known interaction with alcohol, it's advisable to consult your doctor if you regularly consume alcohol. Although it generally does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, avoid these activities if you experience dizziness.

What happens if a dose of HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet be stored?

HEMSYL 250 MG Tablet should be stored in a cool, dry place, ideally at or below 25°C or below 30°C. Keep it away from direct heat, moisture, and sunlight. Ensure it is stored out of the sight and reach of children.
