COMBITHER FORTE TAB by ARISTO PHARMA (PHARMA)

Combither Forte Tablet is an antimalarial medication used to treat specific types of malaria infections. It is manufactured by Aristo Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd.

  • Composition Each tablet contains a combination of two active ingredients:

    • Artemether: 80 mg
    • Lumefantrine: 480 mg
  • Uses Combither Forte Tablet is primarily prescribed for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria in adults and children. It is effective against malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum and other Plasmodium species, particularly in cases where the parasite has shown resistance to other antimalarial drugs. This medication works by killing the malaria-causing parasites in the body, preventing the infection from spreading. It is not intended for preventing malaria or treating severe or complicated cases.

  • Dosage and Administration Combither Forte Tablet should be taken with food, or a fat-containing drink like milk, to ensure proper absorption. The typical dosage is usually twice a day for 3 days. For instance, on the first day, one dose is taken with food, followed by a second dose 8 hours later. For the subsequent two days, one dose is taken in the morning and another in the evening. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment as advised by your doctor, even if symptoms improve, to ensure complete eradication of the infection. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet.

  • Side Effects Common side effects may include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, weakness, joint pain, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, cough, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. Less common side effects can include a fast heartbeat, involuntary muscle spasms, abnormal walking (in children over 12), tingling sensation, skin rashes or itching, and disturbance in heart rhythm (prolonged QTc interval). Most side effects are usually mild and temporary.

  • Precautions Inform your doctor about any existing health conditions, especially liver or kidney problems, severe heart diseases (including a history of QT prolongation), or electrolyte imbalances (like low potassium or magnesium). Also, disclose all other medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, as interactions can occur with drugs for heart rhythm problems, depression, certain antibiotics, and other antimalarials. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use, as it may have harmful effects, and it's generally not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase side effects like dizziness. This medication can cause dizziness, fatigue, or affect vision, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.

  • Storage Store Combither Forte Tablet in its original packaging at room temperature, ideally below 30°C. Keep it protected from excessive heat, moisture, and direct sunlight, and out of the reach and sight of children.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about COMBITHER FORTE TAB by ARISTO PHARMA:

What is COMBITHER FORTE TAB used for?

COMBITHER FORTE TAB is an anti-malarial medication primarily used to treat acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite and other Plasmodium species. It is particularly effective in areas where the parasite has developed resistance to other antimalarial medications. This medicine is used in infants, children, and adults, but it is not intended to prevent malaria or treat severe or complicated cases where organs like the brain, lungs, or kidneys are affected.

How does COMBITHER FORTE TAB work?

COMBITHER FORTE TAB contains two anti-malarial drugs: Artemether and Lumefantrine. These medicines work by interfering with the growth of Plasmodium parasites in the red blood cells of the human body. Artemether quickly reduces the number of parasites by binding to haem, a substance toxic to the malarial parasite, while Lumefantrine eliminates residual parasites and prevents the formation of hemozoin, a toxic malarial pigment. This combination also blocks nucleic acid and protein synthesis in the parasite, leading to its death.

What is the usual dosage of COMBITHER FORTE TAB?

The daily dose of COMBITHER FORTE TAB should be taken as directed by your doctor, as it can vary based on the severity of your condition and your response to the medicine. It is usually taken twice a day for 3 days. On the first day, the first dose is taken with food, followed by the second dose 8 hours later. For the next 2 days, one dose is taken in the morning and one in the evening. It is crucial to adhere to the prescribed dosage and complete the full course of medication, even if you start feeling better, to ensure the infection is fully cleared. Taking the tablet with a fat-containing drink, such as milk, can help improve absorption.

What are the possible side effects of COMBITHER FORTE TAB?

Common side effects of COMBITHER FORTE TAB include headache, dizziness, fatigue, muscle pain, joint pain, cough, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rash, sleep disturbances, decreased appetite, and palpitations. These side effects are usually mild and temporary, often resolving as your body adjusts to the medication. However, if any serious side effects occur or symptoms worsen, it is important to consult your doctor.

Is COMBITHER FORTE TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

COMBITHER FORTE TAB is generally not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. For the subsequent trimesters, it should be used with caution and only under medical advice. It is also not recommended for breastfeeding women, and it is advised to wait at least one week after treatment to resume breastfeeding, as it can harm the infant. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should discuss this with their doctor before starting this medicine.

Can COMBITHER FORTE TAB be taken with other medications?

COMBITHER FORTE TAB can interact with several other medications. It is important to inform your doctor about all medicines, herbal preparations, and supplements you are currently taking.

  • Decreased Efficacy of Combither Forte Tablet: CYP3A4 inducers like rifampin, carbamazepine, and phenytoin can reduce the effectiveness of COMBITHER FORTE TAB.
  • Increased Concentrations/Side Effects: Antiretrovirals like ritonavir can increase the concentrations of artemether and lumefantrine, potentially leading to more side effects.
  • Reduced Effectiveness of Other Medications: The effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives (like ethinylestradiol) may be reduced when taken with COMBITHER FORTE TAB, so alternative contraception methods should be used during treatment and for at least a month afterward.
  • Serious Heart Problems: Do not take medications such as flecainide, metoprolol, imipramine, amitriptyline, clomipramine, terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, clarithromycin, ciprofloxacin, or fluconazole with COMBITHER FORTE TAB, as this can lead to serious heart problems.
  • Other Antimalarials: If you have taken halofantrine within a month, COMBITHER FORTE TAB should not be used. Caution is also advised with other antimalarial medicines like mefloquine or quinine.

What precautions should be taken?

Several precautions should be considered before taking COMBITHER FORTE TAB:

  • Allergies: Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to Artemether, Lumefantrine, or any of its ingredients.
  • Severe Malaria & Organ Impairment: It is contraindicated in serious malarial infections with impaired body functions such as difficulty breathing, fits, or kidney, brain, and liver-related problems. It is not recommended for severe cases of malaria affecting specific organs.
  • Heart Conditions: Exercise caution if you have a family history of heart disease, irregular heartbeat, slow heart rate, or other heart disorders, including QT prolongation.
  • Electrolyte Imbalances: Patients with conditions like hypokalemia (low potassium) or hypomagnesemia (low magnesium) should take precautions, as this can impact the QT interval.
  • Liver and Kidney Issues: Caution is advised for patients with severe kidney disease or severe liver disease.
  • Alcohol Consumption: It is generally advised not to consume alcohol while taking this medicine, as it may aggravate side effects like stomach problems and mental disturbances.
  • Driving/Operating Machinery: COMBITHER FORTE TAB may cause dizziness and fatigue, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
