Description
HERPIKIND OINTMENT
HERPIKIND Ointment, manufactured by Mankind Pharma, is an antiviral medication used for the topical treatment of certain viral skin infections.
Composition
HERPIKIND Ointment contains Aciclovir (Acyclovir) 5% w/w as its active ingredient.
Uses
HERPIKIND Ointment is primarily used to treat skin infections caused by the Herpes simplex virus (HSV). This includes:
- Herpes Labialis (Cold Sores): Managing initial outbreaks and recurrent episodes on the lips and face in adults and children aged 12 years and above.
- Genital Herpes: Managing initial outbreaks and recurrent episodes in adults with a healthy immune system.
- It helps to reduce symptoms such as itching, burning, and tingling, and promotes faster healing. It works by preventing the multiplication of the virus in skin cells, thereby stopping the virus from producing new viruses and clearing up the infection.
Dosage and Administration
HERPIKIND Ointment is for external use only.
- Ensure the affected skin area is clean and dry before application.
- Apply a thin layer of the ointment to cover the entire affected area, including the edges of lesions, and gently massage until absorbed.
- Always wash hands thoroughly before and after applying the ointment to prevent spreading the infection.
- The frequency and duration of application should be as prescribed by a healthcare professional, typically five times a day, starting at the earliest sign or symptom of recurrence.
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, or mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
- Do not cover the treated area with bandages unless specifically instructed by a doctor.
Side Effects
Common side effects associated with HERPIKIND Ointment application include:
- Local skin reactions such as burning, stinging, or itching sensations at the application site.
- Dry, flaky, or peeling skin.
- Redness (erythema) or pigmentation changes. Most side effects are temporary and usually resolve upon discontinuing the ointment. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult a doctor.
Precautions
- Allergy: Do not use HERPIKIND Ointment if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any other ingredients in the formulation.
- Children: Not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age for herpes labialis, and generally not recommended for children below 12 years unless directed by a doctor, due to limited safety information.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before using during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Interactions: Inform your doctor about any other topical medications or skin conditions.
- Weak Immune System: Individuals with a weakened immune system should inform their doctor before using this ointment.
- HERPIKIND Ointment does not cure the infection and does not stop the spread of these conditions; therefore, it is advised to avoid physical contact when lesions are present.
Storage
Store HERPIKIND Ointment at room temperature, below 25°C, protected from moisture and heat. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Ensure the tube is tightly closed when not in use.
Frequently asked questions
Herpikind Ointment contains Acyclovir as its active ingredient, which is an antiviral medication used to treat certain viral infections caused by the herpes simplex virus.
What is Herpikind Ointment used for?
Herpikind Ointment is primarily used to treat herpes simplex virus infections of the skin. This includes initial outbreaks of genital herpes, recurrent episodes of genital herpes, and herpes labialis (cold sores or fever blisters) on the face or lips. It can also be used for certain types of sores caused by the herpes simplex virus in individuals with weakened immune systems.
How does Herpikind Ointment work?
Herpikind Ointment works by stopping the spread and growth of the herpes virus in the body. Its active ingredient, Acyclovir, is an antiviral medication that inhibits the production of viral DNA, thereby preventing the virus from multiplying. This helps to manage the infection, reduce its severity, and promote healing of the sores.
What is the usual dosage for Herpikind Ointment?
Herpikind Ointment is typically applied to the affected area 6 times a day, usually every 3 hours, for 7 days. It's best to start using the ointment as soon as you notice the first symptoms of an infection, such as tingling, redness, itching, or a bump. Apply enough ointment to adequately cover all lesions.
What are the possible side effects of Herpikind Ointment?
Common side effects associated with Herpikind Ointment include dry or cracked lips, flaky, peeling, or dry skin, and a temporary burning or stinging sensation at the application site. Other possible side effects include redness, swelling, or irritation in the treated area. If any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away, you should inform your doctor.
Is Herpikind Ointment safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Acyclovir, the active ingredient in Herpikind Ointment, is not known to be harmful during pregnancy. It passes into breast milk in very small amounts, which are unlikely to cause any problems for a breastfed baby. However, if you are applying the ointment to your breast, it's recommended to clean the area thoroughly before breastfeeding to prevent your baby from coming into contact with the medicine. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can Herpikind Ointment be taken with other medications?
Due to minimal systemic absorption when applied topically, significant drug interactions with Herpikind Ointment are not generally expected. However, it's crucial to inform your doctor or pharmacist about all the medications, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you are currently using to avoid any potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken while using Herpikind Ointment?
Herpikind Ointment is for external use only. Do not let it get into your eyes, mouth, or nose, and do not swallow the medication. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after applying the ointment. To prevent spreading the infection to other body sites or to other people, use a finger cot or rubber glove when applying the ointment. Avoid applying the ointment to unaffected skin. If you are being treated for genital herpes, avoid sexual contact until the lesions have completely healed. If your symptoms do not improve during treatment or if they worsen, contact your doctor.
What happens if a dose of Herpikind Ointment is missed?
If you miss a dose of Herpikind Ointment, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra ointment to make up for a missed dose.
How should Herpikind Ointment be stored?
Herpikind Ointment should be stored at room temperature, ideally between 15° to 25°C (59° to 77°F), in a dry place. Keep the container tightly closed and out of the reach of children and pets. Do not freeze the medication.
