Description

Name Livogen Captab (or Livogen Ferrous Fumarate & Folic Acid Captab) Manufactured by Procter & Gamble Health Limited.

Composition Each film-coated captab contains:

  • Ferrous Fumarate IP: 152 mg (equivalent to 50 mg elemental iron)
  • Folic Acid IP: 1500 mcg (1.5 mg)

Uses Livogen Captab is a haematinic medication primarily used for the therapeutic management and prevention of iron and folic acid deficiencies. It is prescribed for:

  • All types of anemias due to nutritional deficiencies, including iron deficiency anemia.
  • Nutritional support during pregnancy and lactation when demands for iron and folic acid are increased.
  • Recovery post-surgery, operation, or trauma.
  • Reducing weakness and fatigue and improving overall vitality by increasing hemoglobin levels.

Dosage and Administration Take Livogen Captab as advised by your doctor. It is preferably taken one hour before a meal or two hours after a meal for optimal absorption. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not suck, chew, or keep it in the mouth to avoid mouth ulcerations and tooth discoloration.

Side Effects Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea, anorexia, vomiting
  • Constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain or discomfort
  • Darkening of stools (a common and harmless effect due to unabsorbed iron)
  • Hypersensitivity reactions such as erythema, urticaria, and pruritus (itchiness).

Precautions

  • Contraindications: Do not take if you have hypersensitivity to ferrous fumarate or folic acid, iron storage diseases (e.g., hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis), inflammatory bowel disease, active peptic ulcer, or certain anemias not caused by iron deficiency.
  • Interactions: Avoid consuming tea, coffee, or dairy products immediately before or after taking the tablet, as they may interfere with iron absorption. Certain medications like antacids and some antibiotics may also affect absorption; maintain a gap of 2-3 hours between medications.
  • Warnings: Folic acid at doses above 1.0 mg/day may mask vitamin B12 deficiency. Caution is advised in patients with folate-dependent tumors. Elderly patients may be at increased risk of serious adverse reactions.

Storage Store at or below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

What is Livogen Tablet used for?

Livogen Tablet is a nutritional supplement primarily used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia and folic acid deficiency. It is also prescribed to meet increased nutritional needs during pregnancy, breastfeeding, after surgery, or in conditions involving nutritional malabsorption. The medicine helps to boost red blood cell production, increase hemoglobin levels, enhance energy, and reduce fatigue.

How does Livogen Tablet work?

Livogen Tablet contains two main active ingredients: Ferrous Fumarate and Folic Acid (Vitamin B9). Ferrous Fumarate is a form of iron that helps replenish the body's iron stores, which are essential for the formation of hemoglobin in red blood cells and for transporting oxygen throughout the body. Folic Acid is vital for DNA synthesis, cell division, and the production of healthy red blood cells. Together, these components work to combat anemia and support overall blood health.

What is the usual dosage of Livogen Tablet?

The standard recommended dosage for Livogen Tablet is typically one tablet per day, or as advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food. For optimal absorption, some sources suggest taking it on an empty stomach (one hour before or two hours after a meal), while others recommend taking it after meals to minimize stomach discomfort.

What are the possible side effects of Livogen Tablet?

Livogen Tablet is generally well-tolerated, but some individuals may experience side effects. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach upset or discomfort, constipation, diarrhea, and dark-colored stools (a common and harmless effect of iron supplements). In rare cases, more serious side effects like severe allergic reactions may occur. If any bothersome or severe symptoms appear, consult a healthcare professional.

Is Livogen Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Yes, Livogen Tablet is generally considered safe and is commonly prescribed during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. It helps to meet the increased demands for iron and folic acid in expectant and lactating mothers, which are crucial for maternal health and fetal development. However, it is important to always consult your doctor before taking any medication during these periods.

Can Livogen Tablet be taken with other medications?

Livogen Tablet can interact with certain medications. For example, antacids, tetracycline antibiotics, levodopa, chloramphenicol, methyldopa, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), anticonvulsants (like phenytoin), and certain anti-inflammatory drugs (like sulfasalazine) can reduce the absorption or effectiveness of iron and folic acid. On the other hand, Vitamin C can enhance iron absorption. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while taking Livogen Tablet?

To ensure optimal absorption, avoid consuming tea, coffee, or dairy products immediately before or after taking Livogen Tablet. Individuals with a known allergy to iron or any other ingredients, iron storage disorders (such as hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis), bacterial infections, peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal disorders, or Vitamin B12 deficiency should use this medicine with caution and under medical supervision. Excessive alcohol consumption may also interfere with iron absorption.

What happens if a dose of Livogen Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of Livogen Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should Livogen Tablet be stored?

Livogen Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children. The ideal storage temperature is typically between 10°C and 25°C or below 30°C.
