Description
HYTRIN 1 by ABBOTT INDIA LIMITED
Name
- Brand Name: HYTRIN 1
- Common Name: Terazosin
Composition
- Active Ingredient: Terazosin (1 mg)
Uses HYTRIN 1 is an alpha-blocker primarily used to treat:
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): It relaxes blood vessels, reducing the heart's workload and lowering blood pressure, which helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): It relaxes the muscles in the prostate gland and bladder neck, improving urine flow and alleviating symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty starting or stopping urine flow, a weak stream, and incomplete bladder emptying.
- Heart Failure: It can also be used in the treatment of heart failure.
Dosage and Administration
- Typical Dosage: Initially, 1 mg is taken orally at bedtime. The dosage may be gradually increased at weekly intervals based on the patient's response.
- Maintenance Dose: 2-10 mg once daily.
- Maximum Dose: 20 mg daily.
- Administration: It can be taken with or without food. The first dose and subsequent increases should be taken at bedtime to help prevent syncope.
Side Effects Common Side Effects:
- Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up from a lying or sitting position (postural hypotension).
- Headache
- Nausea
- Fatigue or unusual tiredness/weakness
- Blurred vision
- Palpitations or fast/irregular heartbeat
- Swelling of ankles, hands, or feet (peripheral edema)
- Nasal congestion (stuffy nose)
- Dry mouth
- Somnolence (sleepiness)
- Back or joint pain (arthralgia, myalgia)
Serious Side Effects (Seek immediate medical attention if experienced):
- Syncope (fainting), particularly with initial doses or dose increases.
- Priapism (prolonged and painful erection).
- Allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat).
- Chest pain
- Signs of a urinary tract infection (e.g., pain when urinating, frequent urination, strong odor)
Precautions
- Orthostatic Hypotension: Terazosin can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, especially when changing positions. Patients should rise slowly.
- Cataract Surgery: Inform your healthcare provider if you are scheduled for cataract or glaucoma surgery, as Terazosin may increase the risk of Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS).
- Micturition Syncope: Patients with a history of fainting during or after urination should not take terazosin.
- Heart Conditions: Use with caution in patients with heart failure or pulmonary edema due to mitral or aortic valve stenosis.
- Hepatic Impairment: Use with caution in patients with liver problems.
- Drug Interactions:
- Concomitant use with other antihypertensive agents (e.g., verapamil, ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers) may increase the risk of hypotension.
- Concomitant use with phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil) can significantly increase the risk of hypotension; concurrent use should be avoided or monitored closely with appropriate dosing separation.
- NSAIDs may decrease the effects of terazosin.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The effects of terazosin on pregnancy and whether it passes into breast milk are not fully known. Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
- Children: HYTRIN 1 is not recommended for use in children.
Storage
- Store HYTRIN 1 at room temperature, ideally between 20-25°C (68-77°F).
- Protect from light and moisture.
- Keep out of sight and reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
HYTRIN 1 (Terazosin) by ABBOTT INDIA LIMITED is a medication primarily used to treat high blood pressure and symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Here are some frequently asked questions about HYTRIN 1:
What is HYTRIN 1 used for?
HYTRIN 1 is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to relieve symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. For hypertension, it helps lower blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. For BPH, it helps improve urinary flow and reduces symptoms like difficulty urinating or a weak urine stream.
How does HYTRIN 1 work?
HYTRIN 1, which contains Terazosin, belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-blockers. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the blood vessels, which allows blood to flow more easily and lowers blood pressure. For BPH, it relaxes the muscles in the prostate and the bladder neck, improving urine flow.
What is the usual dosage of HYTRIN 1?
The initial dose of HYTRIN 1 is typically 1 mg, taken once daily at bedtime. This initial bedtime dose is important to minimize a sudden drop in blood pressure, known as the "first-dose effect". Your doctor may gradually increase the dose based on your response and condition. For hypertension, the dose can be increased up to 20 mg per day, while for BPH, maintenance doses are usually 5 to 10 mg once daily.
What are the possible side effects of HYTRIN 1?
Common side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness (especially when standing up), fatigue, headache, nausea, stuffy or runny nose, and swelling in the hands or feet. More serious, but less common, side effects that require immediate medical attention include allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), prolonged or painful erection (priapism), and a significant drop in blood pressure leading to fainting (syncope). It's also important to inform your doctor if you are scheduled for eye surgery, as Terazosin can cause a condition called intraoperative floppy iris syndrome.
Is HYTRIN 1 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
HYTRIN 1 is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks, as its safety during pregnancy has not been definitively established. For breastfeeding mothers, it is probably unsafe, as limited human data suggests the drug may pass into breast milk and potentially harm the baby. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Can HYTRIN 1 be taken with other medications?
You should inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Taking HYTRIN 1 with other blood pressure-lowering medications can lead to an additive hypotensive effect, increasing the risk of low blood pressure. Concomitant use with phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors (like sildenafil) can also significantly increase the risk of hypotension and should be avoided or used with caution, potentially requiring a separation of doses. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may decrease the effects of terazosin.
What precautions should be taken while on HYTRIN 1?
To minimize dizziness or fainting, especially when starting treatment or increasing the dose, get up slowly from a sitting or lying position. Avoid consuming alcohol while taking HYTRIN 1, as it can worsen dizziness and lower blood pressure further. Be cautious when driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you, as it can cause drowsiness and dizziness. Inform your doctor if you are scheduled for eye surgery, particularly cataract surgery. Use with caution if you have liver, kidney, or heart conditions, and your doctor may recommend testing for prostate cancer before starting HYTRIN 1 for BPH.
What happens if a dose of HYTRIN 1 is missed?
If you miss a dose, take the next dose at your regularly scheduled time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed tablet. If you have missed several days of doses, you should not continue with the original dosage but instead contact your doctor, as you may need to restart therapy at the initial 1 mg dose.
How should HYTRIN 1 be stored?
HYTRIN 1 should be stored at room temperature, typically between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F). Keep the container tightly closed and protect the medication from light and moisture. Always keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Dispose of any unused or expired medication properly, preferably through a take-back program.
