TOR 10 Tablet

Name: TOR 10 (Brand Name), Torsemide (Common Name)

Composition: Each tablet contains 10 mg of Torsemide as its active ingredient.

Uses: TOR 10 is a loop diuretic, often referred to as a "water pill." It is prescribed to treat edema (fluid retention) associated with various medical conditions, including:

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Liver disease (hepatic cirrhosis)
  • Kidney disease (renal failure)

Additionally, TOR 10 is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive medications. By increasing the excretion of water and salt through the kidneys, it helps reduce excess fluid levels and lowers blood pressure.

Dosage and Administration: TOR 10 is taken orally, usually once daily, with or without food. To prevent frequent urination at night, it is generally recommended to avoid taking it within 4 hours of bedtime.

  • For Edema due to Heart Failure: Typical starting dosage is 10 mg or 20 mg once daily, which may be adjusted up to a maximum of 200 mg per day to achieve the desired diuretic effect.
  • For Edema due to Liver Cirrhosis: Typical starting dosage is 5 mg or 10 mg once daily, often in combination with an aldosterone antagonist or potassium-sparing diuretic. The dosage can be increased up to a maximum of 40 mg per day.
  • For Edema due to Kidney Failure: Typical starting dosage is 20 mg once daily, with a maximum of 200 mg per day.
  • For High Blood Pressure: Typical starting dosage is 5 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to 10 mg per day if needed, usually after 4-6 weeks.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: Frequent urination, headache, cough, sore throat, upset stomach, constipation, diarrhea, weakness, excessive thirst, and dizziness (especially when standing up too quickly).
  • Serious Side Effects: Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances (e.g., low potassium, sodium, magnesium), indicated by dry mouth, extreme thirst, muscle pain or cramps, weakness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, or a fast heartbeat. Other serious effects can include hearing loss or ringing in the ears (tinnitus), low blood pressure, and kidney injury.

Precautions:

  • Patients with liver disease, particularly those with hepatic coma, should use TOR 10 with caution or avoid it.
  • Care should be taken in individuals with diabetes, gout, or electrolyte imbalances. Blood and urine tests to monitor electrolyte levels, blood sugar, uric acid, creatinine, and lipids are important during treatment.
  • TOR 10 may interact with other medications, including salicylates, cholestyramine, lithium, and certain antibiotics. Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.
  • Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase the risk of low blood pressure and dizziness.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult their doctor before using this medication.

Storage: Store TOR 10 tablets at room temperature, between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Keep the medicine away from light, moisture, and damp areas. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

What is TOR 10 Tablet used for?

TOR 10 Tablet is a diuretic medicine, also known as a water tablet. It is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce swelling (edema) caused by excess fluid in the body due to conditions like heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease.

How does TOR 10 Tablet work?

TOR 10 Tablet works by increasing the amount of urine produced by the kidneys. This action helps your body eliminate extra water and certain electrolytes, such as salt, which reduces fluid build-up and helps to lower high blood pressure.

What is the usual dosage for TOR 10 Tablet?

The dosage of TOR 10 Tablet varies depending on the condition being treated and your individual response. For hypertension, the usual initial adult dosage is 5 mg once daily, which may be increased to 10 mg once daily if needed. For edema associated with heart failure, chronic renal failure, or hepatic cirrhosis, initial doses typically range from 5 mg to 20 mg once daily, and can be adjusted by your doctor up to a maximum of 200 mg per day in most cases, or 40 mg per day for hepatic cirrhosis. It should generally be taken once daily, preferably in the morning, and can be taken with or without food.

What are the possible side effects of TOR 10 Tablet?

Common side effects include headache, dizziness, dehydration, constipation, decreased blood pressure, stomach upset, increased urination, weakness, fatigue, dry mouth, muscle cramps, and low potassium levels. More serious but less common side effects can include severe dehydration, significant electrolyte imbalance, rapid weight loss, vomiting blood, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or skin reactions like blisters or rash. TOR 10 Tablet may also raise blood sugar and uric acid levels. Consult your doctor if any side effects persist or worsen.

Is TOR 10 Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During pregnancy, TOR 10 Tablet is generally considered safe if prescribed, but it should only be used if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risks. Pregnant women should consult their doctor, and regular monitoring of the baby's growth might be necessary. For breastfeeding women, TOR 10 Tablet is probably safe to use if prescribed. Small amounts may pass into breast milk but are unlikely to cause significant side effects in the baby. It is important to consult your doctor before taking this medicine while breastfeeding.

Can TOR 10 Tablet be taken with other medications?

TOR 10 Tablet can be taken alone or in combination with other medicines as advised by your doctor. However, it can interact with certain medications. Concomitant use with aminoglycoside antibiotics (like gentamicin) and ethacrynic acid may increase the risk of ear toxicity. Radiocontrast agents may increase the risk of kidney toxicity. There's also an increased risk of severe low potassium levels when taken with amphotericin B, corticosteroids, or carbenoxolone. Always inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while on TOR 10 Tablet?

Before starting TOR 10 Tablet, inform your doctor about any allergies or pre-existing medical conditions, especially liver or kidney problems, diabetes, gout, or low blood pressure. Regular monitoring of kidney function, electrolyte levels (especially potassium), and blood sugar levels is important during treatment. Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase side effects like dizziness or low blood pressure. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience dizziness or vision disturbances. It is crucial not to stop taking the medicine without consulting your doctor, as this could worsen your condition. Reducing salt intake in your diet can also help the medication work better.

What happens if a dose of TOR 10 Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of TOR 10 Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should TOR 10 Tablet be stored?

TOR 10 Tablet should be stored at room temperature, ideally between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) or below 30°C (86°F), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the tablets in a tightly sealed container and ensure they are out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
