Frequently asked questions
What is MEFKIND P SUSPENSION used for?
MEFKIND P SUSPENSION is primarily used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever and inflammation in infants and children above six months of age. It can help with conditions such as headaches, toothaches, muscle aches, arthritis, and painful periods (dysmenorrhea) in girls.
How does MEFKIND P SUSPENSION work?
MEFKIND P SUSPENSION is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that contains Mefenamic Acid. It works by blocking the production of certain natural chemical messengers in the body called prostaglandins, which are responsible for causing pain, fever, and inflammation.
What is the usual dosage for MEFKIND P SUSPENSION?
The dosage of MEFKIND P SUSPENSION is determined by a doctor based on the child's age and body weight. It should be taken orally as advised by the doctor, typically with or after food to help prevent stomach upset. It's important to use a measuring cup for accurate dosing and shake the bottle well before use. The medication is generally intended for short-term relief, usually not exceeding one week unless specifically directed by a healthcare provider.
What are the possible side effects of MEFKIND P SUSPENSION?
Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, heartburn, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness. These effects are usually temporary and tend to improve as the body adjusts to the medication. If side effects persist, worsen, or become bothersome, it is advisable to consult a doctor. More serious but rare side effects can include gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney issues, or severe allergic reactions.
Is MEFKIND P SUSPENSION safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
MEFKIND P SUSPENSION is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, due to potential risks to the developing baby. For breastfeeding women, its use is also not recommended as Mefenamic Acid can pass into breast milk, and its effects on the nursing infant are not fully known. A doctor may suggest a safer alternative if pain relief is needed during these periods.
Can MEFKIND P SUSPENSION be taken with other medications?
MEFKIND P SUSPENSION can interact with various other medications. Concurrent use with blood thinners (like warfarin), other NSAIDs, corticosteroids, or antiplatelet medicines can increase the risk of bleeding or gastrointestinal side effects. It may also affect the effectiveness of certain blood pressure medications and can increase levels of drugs like digoxin. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products being taken to avoid potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken before giving MEFKIND P SUSPENSION?
Before administering MEFKIND P SUSPENSION, inform the doctor about any allergies to medications, or a history of heart problems, birth defects, liver disease, kidney disease, lung disease, or bleeding disorders. Caution is also advised for individuals with asthma (especially aspirin-sensitive asthma), active ulcers, or chronic gastrointestinal inflammation. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase the risk of stomach irritation and side effects.
What happens if a dose of MEFKIND P SUSPENSION is missed?
If a dose of MEFKIND P SUSPENSION is missed, administer it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed one. If a child vomits within 30 minutes of taking the medicine, the same dose can be given again.
How should MEFKIND P SUSPENSION be stored?
MEFKIND P SUSPENSION should be stored at room temperature, in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. It should be kept in its original packaging with the lid tightly closed and out of the reach and sight of children and pets.
