Name

  • Common Name: Montelukast (5 mg)

Composition MONTAIR 5 TABLET contains Montelukast 5 mg as its active ingredient. It is classified as a leukotriene receptor antagonist.

Uses MONTAIR 5 TABLET is primarily used for the following conditions:

  • Asthma: For the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, including prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, in children aged 6 to 14 years. It is not for sudden asthma attacks.
  • Allergic Rhinitis: To relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes.

Dosage and Administration For pediatric patients 6 to 14 years of age, the typical dosage is one 5 mg chewable tablet once daily. It is often recommended to take it in the evening for asthma or allergy symptoms. For exercise-induced asthma, it may be taken 2 hours before exercise. MONTAIR 5 TABLET can be taken with or without food. Do not discontinue the medication abruptly without consulting a doctor.

Side Effects

  • Common Side Effects: Headache, stomach pain, diarrhea, cough, sore throat, runny nose, sinus inflammation, fever, upper respiratory tract infection, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and skin rash.
  • Serious Side Effects: Rare but serious side effects can include allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat), behavioral and mood changes (such as anxiety, aggression, depression, or suicidal thoughts), fits, increased bleeding tendency, and irregular heartbeats.

Precautions MONTAIR 5 TABLET should not be used to treat acute asthma attacks; patients should have rescue medication available. Inform your doctor if you have liver problems, mental health issues, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. The chewable tablets contain phenylalanine, which is a consideration for patients with phenylketonuria. Avoid alcohol consumption as it may worsen side effects. Consult your doctor about potential interactions with other medications like Carbamazepine, Fluconazole, Phenytoin, or Phenobarbital.

Storage Store MONTAIR 5 TABLET below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, in its original packaging. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

MONTAIR 5 TABLET by CIPLA HEALTH LTD is a medication primarily used for the management of asthma and allergic rhinitis. It contains Montelukast as its active ingredient.

Here are some frequently asked questions about MONTAIR 5 TABLET:

What is MONTAIR 5 TABLET used for?

MONTAIR 5 TABLET is used for the long-term management and prevention of asthma symptoms in children aged 6 to 14 years, including preventing airway narrowing triggered by physical activity (exercise-induced bronchoconstriction). It also provides relief from symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny nose, and nasal congestion.

How does MONTAIR 5 TABLET work?

MONTAIR 5 TABLET contains Montelukast, which is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of leukotrienes, which are natural inflammatory chemicals released in the body during allergic reactions and asthma attacks. By blocking these chemicals, Montelukast reduces inflammation, swelling, and constriction in the airways of the lungs and nose, making breathing easier and preventing asthma attacks and allergy symptoms.

What is the usual dosage for MONTAIR 5 TABLET?

For pediatric patients aged 6 to 14 years, the recommended dose is one 5 mg chewable tablet daily, typically taken in the evening. It can be taken with or without food. If used to prevent exercise-induced asthma, it should be taken at least 2 hours before exercise. It's important to follow the dose and duration as advised by your doctor and not to exceed the prescribed amount.

What are the possible side effects of MONTAIR 5 TABLET?

Common side effects may include headache, stomach ache, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, and mild rash. Other reported side effects can include fever, upper respiratory tract infections, tooth pain, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. Most of these side effects are usually temporary and resolve over time. However, if any symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult your doctor. Rarely, serious side effects like behavior and mood-related changes (e.g., anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts) have been reported, and if such symptoms occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Is MONTAIR 5 TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

MONTAIR 5 TABLET is generally intended for use in children. For adults, if pregnant or breastfeeding, it should be used with caution, and only if clearly needed after consulting a doctor. There is limited data on its effects during pregnancy, and Montelukast may pass into breast milk, so discussion of potential risks and benefits with a healthcare provider is essential.

Can MONTAIR 5 TABLET be taken with other medications?

MONTAIR 5 TABLET can generally be taken with other therapies routinely used for asthma and allergies. However, some medications may interact. Inform your doctor about all medicines your child is taking, especially antiepileptics like phenobarbital, phenytoin, and carbamazepine; antituberculosis medicines like rifampin; and lipid-lowering agents such as gemfibrozil, as these may affect montelukast levels in the body.

What precautions should be taken while taking MONTAIR 5 TABLET?

MONTAIR 5 TABLET is not for treating sudden or acute asthma attacks; a rescue inhaler should always be available for such situations. It's important to continue taking the medication as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, as suddenly stopping could lead to a relapse. If your child has liver problems or a history of mental illness, inform your doctor. Avoid driving or operating machinery if dizziness or drowsiness occurs. If your child's asthma worsens while on this medication, contact your doctor immediately.

What happens if a dose of MONTAIR 5 TABLET is missed?

If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should MONTAIR 5 TABLET be stored?

MONTAIR 5 TABLET should be stored at room temperature, protected from bright light and dampness. It should not be stored in the bathroom and must be kept out of the sight and reach of children. Always check the expiry date before use.
