Description

TACROZ OINTMENT 10 GM by GLENMARK PHARMACEUTICALS LTD.

  • Name: Tacroz Ointment (Brand Name), Tacrolimus (Common Name)
  • Composition: Each gram of Tacroz Ointment contains Tacrolimus USP 0.03% w/w as the active ingredient.
  • Uses: Tacroz Ointment is a topical immunosuppressant prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children aged 2 years and above, especially when other conventional therapies are ineffective or unsuitable. It works by suppressing the skin's immune system, thereby reducing inflammation, itching, and redness associated with eczema.
  • Dosage and Administration: For external use only. Apply a thin layer of Tacroz Ointment to the affected skin areas twice daily and rub in gently and completely. Treatment should continue for one week after the signs and symptoms of atopic dermatitis clear. Do not use occlusive dressings, bandages, or wraps on the treated area unless advised by a doctor. Wash hands before and after application, unless the hands are the area being treated.
  • Side Effects: Common side effects include burning, stinging, itching, irritation, redness, dryness, or tingling sensation at the application site. Other reported side effects include headache and increased skin sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Long-term continuous use has been rarely associated with an increased risk of skin cancer and lymphoma.
  • Precautions: Avoid excessive exposure to natural or artificial sunlight (tanning beds or UV light therapy) while using Tacroz Ointment; use sun protection. Do not use on infected or broken skin. It is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to tacrolimus or any components of the preparation. Use with caution in patients with liver diseases, skin tumors, or weakened immune systems. Not recommended for children under 2 years of age. Consult a doctor if pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Alcohol consumption may cause facial flushing or skin irritation.
  • Storage: Store Tacroz Ointment in its original container in a clean, cool, and dry place, protected from moisture, sunlight, and heat, ideally below 25°C or 30°C. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not freeze.
Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about Tacroz Ointment 10 GM:

What is Tacroz Ointment used for?

Tacroz Ointment is primarily used to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema. This is a chronic skin condition characterized by itchy, red, dry, and inflamed patches on the skin. It is typically prescribed when other conventional therapies, such as topical corticosteroids, are not effective or suitable.

How does Tacroz Ointment work?

Tacroz Ointment contains the active ingredient Tacrolimus, which is an immunosuppressant. It works by suppressing the overactive immune response in the skin that causes inflammation. By inhibiting T-lymphocyte activation and reducing the release of inflammatory mediators, it helps to alleviate allergic reactions, redness, swelling, and itching associated with eczema.

What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?

Tacroz Ointment is for external use only. It should be applied as a thin layer to the affected skin areas, typically twice daily, or as directed by your doctor. Ensure the skin is clean and dry before application. Gently rub the ointment into the skin until it is completely absorbed. Do not cover the treated area with bandages or occlusive dressings unless specifically instructed by your doctor, as this may increase the risk of side effects. Continue using the medicine for the duration prescribed by your doctor, which may include one week after symptoms have cleared.

What are the possible side effects of Tacroz Ointment?

Common side effects at the application site include burning, tingling, pain, itching, irritation, rash, dryness, peeling, redness, and a sensation of warmth. These reactions are usually mild to moderate and tend to improve as treatment continues. Other possible side effects include increased skin sensitivity to sunlight, headache, hair follicle inflammation, acne, or cold sores. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is Tacroz Ointment safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Tacroz Ointment should generally not be used during pregnancy due to limited information on its safety in humans and the potential for the active ingredient, Tacrolimus, to transfer across the placenta. It should only be used if the potential benefit to the mother justifies the potential risk to the fetus, as determined by a doctor.

For breastfeeding mothers, Tacroz Ointment is not recommended as Tacrolimus can pass into breast milk. It is important to consult your doctor before using this medicine while breastfeeding. If used, avoid applying it to areas that may come into contact with your infant, such as the breasts or nipples.

Can Tacroz Ointment be taken with other medications?

Since Tacroz Ointment is applied externally, it is less likely to interact with orally taken medications. However, it may interact with other topical creams, lotions, or gels. It should be used with caution alongside certain systemic medications, such as erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, and diltiazem, which are known CYP3A4 inhibitors. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are using, including other topical preparations. Avoid applying moisturizing creams and lotions within 2 hours of applying Tacroz Ointment.

What precautions should be taken while using Tacroz Ointment?

  • Sun Exposure: Minimize or avoid exposure to natural and artificial sunlight (e.g., tanning beds) while using this ointment. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors, as Tacroz Ointment can increase skin sensitivity to the sun.
  • Application Sites: Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, or open wounds. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Underlying Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, skin tumors, hereditary skin diseases (like Netherton's syndrome), a weakened immune system, or any severe skin infections. Do not use on infected or broken skin.
  • Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol, as it may cause facial flushing or skin redness.
  • Children: Tacroz Ointment 0.1% is generally not recommended for children below 16 years of age, and the 0.03% strength is not recommended for children below 2 years of age.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss an application of Tacroz Ointment, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular application schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should Tacroz Ointment be stored?

Store Tacroz Ointment in its original container in a clean and dry place, protected from moisture, direct sunlight, and heat. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Do not use expired or damaged medicine. It should generally be stored below 25°C or below 30°C, and should not be frozen.
