  • Common Name: Haloperidol Oral Solution

Composition Serenace Liquid contains the active ingredient Haloperidol at a concentration of 2 mg/mL.

Uses Serenace Liquid is an antipsychotic medication primarily used to treat various mental and behavioral disorders. It is prescribed for:

  • Schizophrenia, an illness characterized by disturbances in thinking, feelings, and behavior.
  • Psychosis and acute psychosis.
  • Mania, which involves episodes of overactivity, elation, or irritability.
  • Severe anxiety, tension, excitement, agitation, hyperactivity, or aggression in patients with mental or emotional illness.
  • Behavioral problems in children, especially those with mental retardation or mental illness, or severe aggression and hostility.
  • Tourette's Syndrome, a condition involving uncontrolled vocal outbursts and body movements (tics).
  • Nausea and vomiting, particularly when caused by cancer treatment.
  • Anxiety and pain during surgery (neurolept anesthesia).
  • Intractable hiccups.

Dosage and Administration Serenace Liquid is taken orally. The bottle should be shaken well, and the dose should be accurately measured with a medicine measure to ensure correctness. It can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of the medicine in the body.

  • Adults: Initial doses can range from 0.5 to 5 mg two or three times a day, with daily dosages adjusted based on patient response, potentially up to 40 mg/day or even 100 mg/day in severe cases.
  • Elderly or Debilitated Patients: A lower dose of 1 to 3 mg per day is usually sufficient.
  • Children: For severely aggressive or hostile children or those with Tourette's Syndrome, the initial dose should be 1 to 3 mg per day. The maintenance dose is typically 0.05 mg per kg of body weight daily.

Side Effects Common side effects include:

  • Drowsiness, restlessness, agitation, anxiety, confusion.
  • Muscle weakness, muscle spasms, stiffness, and extrapyramidal symptoms (e.g., tremors, shuffling gait, difficulty controlling movements).
  • Nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth, increased saliva.
  • Headache, insomnia (difficulty sleeping).
  • Weight gain.
  • Changes in sex drive or performance, breast enlargement, or missed menstrual periods.

Serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include:

  • Skin rash, hives, or other allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing).
  • Extremely high body temperature, severe muscle stiffness, confusion, and loss of consciousness (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • Heart rhythm changes (fast or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, chest pain).
  • Uncontrolled, repetitive movements of the tongue, mouth, cheeks, or jaw (Tardive Dyskinesia).
  • Seizures, trouble passing urine, or breathing difficulties.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not use if allergic to Haloperidol or any of the ingredients.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor about existing conditions such as Parkinson's disease, severe toxic CNS depression, heart problems (including prolonged QT syndrome), epilepsy, thyroid problems, glaucoma, liver or kidney disease.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not generally recommended during pregnancy as it may affect the unborn baby; use only if the benefits outweigh the risks. It may pass into breast milk, so breastfeeding is not advised.
  • Interactions: Avoid alcohol as it can increase drowsiness and dizziness. Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially those that cause drowsiness or affect heart rhythm, as they may interact with Haloperidol. Nicotine can affect Haloperidol levels, so changes in smoking habits should be discussed with a doctor.
  • Activities: Be cautious when driving or operating machinery until you know how the medicine affects you, as it can cause dizziness, light-headedness, tiredness, and drowsiness.
  • Sun Sensitivity: Haloperidol may make you more sensitive to sunlight; wear protective clothing and use sunscreen outdoors.
  • Sudden Cessation: Do not stop taking Serenace suddenly, as this can worsen symptoms or lead to withdrawal effects. The dosage should be gradually reduced under medical supervision.

Storage Store Serenace Liquid in its original container in a cool, dry place where the temperature stays below 30°C. Protect it from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Keep it out of reach of young children.

Frequently asked questions

SERENACE LIQ (Haloperidol) is an antipsychotic medication manufactured by RPG LIFE SCIENCES -MAIN DIVISION. It is primarily used to treat various psychiatric and neurological conditions by affecting chemical messengers in the brain.

What is SERENACE LIQ used for?

SERENACE LIQ is used to manage mental health problems such as schizophrenia, psychosis, and acute manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. It also treats Tourette's syndrome, which involves involuntary movements or sounds (tics), severe behavioral problems, agitation, aggression, and can be used to control nausea and vomiting, including that caused by cancer treatment or during surgery.

How does SERENACE LIQ work?

SERENACE LIQ contains Haloperidol, a typical antipsychotic drug. It works by blocking the action of dopamine, a chemical messenger in the brain that plays a significant role in thoughts, mood, and behavior. By rebalancing dopamine levels, it helps to improve thinking, mood, and behavior.

What is the usual dosage of SERENACE LIQ?

The dosage of SERENACE LIQ varies depending on the condition being treated and the patient's individual response.

  • Adults: The usual daily dose can range from 0.5 mg to 40 mg, given in divided doses, and can go up to 100 mg per day in severe cases. A common maintenance dose is 3-10 mg daily.
  • Elderly: A lower dose of 1-3 mg per day is generally sufficient due to increased sensitivity.
  • Children: For conditions like Tourette's syndrome or severe aggression, an initial dose of 0.5 mg per day may be prescribed, increased gradually. The maintenance dose is typically 0.05 mg/kg of body weight daily. It is not recommended for children under 1 to 3 years of age. Always follow your doctor's specific instructions for dosage and administration. The liquid should be measured accurately with a provided measuring cup or dropper.

What are the possible side effects of SERENACE LIQ?

Common side effects may include constipation, dry mouth, muscle stiffness, sleepiness, tremor, urinary retention, weight gain, abnormal voluntary movements, increased prolactin levels in the blood, and orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing). Other effects can include agitation, insomnia, headache, and extrapyramidal symptoms (movement disorders).

More serious side effects, though less common, can include:

  • Tardive Dyskinesia: Uncontrolled, worm-like movements of the tongue, mouth, cheeks, or jaw, which may spread to the arms and legs.
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): A rare but serious reaction characterized by a sudden increase in body temperature, severe muscle stiffness, and changes in mental state.
  • Heart problems: Such as prolonged QT interval and irregular heart rhythms. Report any persistent or severe side effects to your doctor.

Is SERENACE LIQ safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

  • Pregnancy: SERENACE LIQ is generally not recommended during pregnancy, as it may affect the unborn baby. If use is necessary, your doctor will discuss the potential risks and benefits. Babies exposed to antipsychotic medicines like SERENACE LIQ during the third trimester may experience breathing problems, feeding difficulties, spasms, restlessness, involuntary movements, and/or withdrawal symptoms after birth.
  • Breastfeeding: It is not recommended while breastfeeding because the medication can pass into breast milk and may harm the baby. If prescribed, the baby should be monitored for excessive sleepiness.

Can SERENACE LIQ be taken with other medications?

SERENACE LIQ can interact with several other medications and substances. It's crucial to inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and recreational substances.

  • Avoid with: Alcohol and other CNS depressants (e.g., hypnotics, general anesthetics, anxiolytics, opioids) can increase drowsiness and sedative effects.
  • Caution with: Anticholinergics, carbamazepine, rifampicin, lithium (may increase risk of neuroleptic malignant syndrome), and drugs that prolong the QT interval or cause electrolyte imbalance.
  • Smoking: Nicotine can affect the amount of haloperidol in your body, so changes in smoking habits should be discussed with your doctor.

What precautions should be taken while using SERENACE LIQ?

  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have a history of Parkinson's disease, severe CNS depression, prolonged QT syndrome, breast cancer, seizures, heart conditions, liver or kidney problems, glaucoma, epilepsy, or dementia-related psychosis (especially in the elderly, as it carries an increased risk of death).
  • Sudden Discontinuation: Do not stop taking SERENACE LIQ abruptly, as this can worsen symptoms or lead to withdrawal effects. Your doctor will likely recommend a gradual reduction.
  • Driving/Machinery: SERENACE LIQ can cause dizziness, light-headedness, tiredness, and drowsiness. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you.
  • Sun Exposure: The medication may cause photosensitivity. Wear protective clothing and use at least SPF 15+ sunscreen when outdoors.
  • Hydration: SERENACE LIQ may affect your body's ability to regulate temperature, so stay hydrated, especially in hot environments or during strenuous exercise.
  • Monitoring: Regular check-ups, including blood tests and ECGs, may be necessary to monitor your progress and prevent unwanted side effects.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of SERENACE LIQ, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should SERENACE LIQ be stored?

Store SERENACE LIQ in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and at a temperature below 30°C. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children. The liquid concentrate should be protected from light and stored in an opaque bottle.
