Frequently asked questions

AMPOXIN KID TABLET is an antibiotic medication manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd. It contains a combination of Ampicillin (125mg) and Cloxacillin (125mg).

What is AMPOXIN KID TABLET used for?

AMPOXIN KID TABLET is used to treat various bacterial infections in children. These include infections of the lungs, throat, airways, ears, nose, sinuses, tonsils, skin & soft tissue, bone (like osteomyelitis), blood (septicemia), urinary tract, and gastrointestinal tract. It is also prescribed for post-operative wound and lung infections. This medicine is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does AMPOXIN KID TABLET work?

AMPOXIN KID TABLET is a combination of two penicillin antibiotics, Ampicillin and Cloxacillin. Ampicillin works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering (cell wall), which is essential for the bacteria's survival. Cloxacillin also interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall and helps to increase the efficiency of the medicine, especially against resistant bacteria. By destroying this protective covering, the medicine effectively kills the bacteria causing the infection.

What is the usual dosage of AMPOXIN KID TABLET?

The dosage of AMPOXIN KID TABLET depends on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the child's age and weight. It is generally recommended to administer AMPOXIN KID TABLET on an empty stomach, ideally 30 minutes to an hour before meals, for optimal effectiveness. However, if stomach upset occurs, it can be given with food. It is typically given three times a day, and the prescribed course of antibiotics should be completed even if the child starts feeling better.

What are the possible side effects of AMPOXIN KID TABLET?

Common side effects of AMPOXIN KID TABLET include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain or stomach upset, and skin rashes (such as itching, red bumps, or blisters). These side effects are usually temporary and tend to resolve on their own. If any side effects persist or worsen, it is important to consult a doctor. Serious allergic reactions, though rare, can occur, presenting as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and mouth causing difficulty in breathing.

Is AMPOXIN KID TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: The effect of this medicine in pregnant women is not clearly known, although animal studies have not shown undesirable effects on the developing fetus. It is usually considered safe but should only be used if considered essential by a doctor. It is generally not recommended unless absolutely necessary, and all risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor.

Breastfeeding: This medicine passes into breast milk and can cause side effects in a breastfed baby, such as diarrhea and fungal infection of the mouth. Therefore, it is generally advised not to breastfeed while taking this medicine, or to do so only if considered essential by a doctor, monitoring the infant for adverse effects.

Can AMPOXIN KID TABLET be taken with other medications?

AMPOXIN KID TABLET can interact with certain medications. For instance, skin allergies may occur if taken with Allopurinol. Other antibiotics like Chloramphenicol, Azithromycin, Sulphonamides, and Doxycycline can interfere with its action. This medicine can also reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptive medications, so alternative physical contraceptive measures are advised. Medicines like Probenecid, Sulfasalazine, and Aspirin may also interact. It's crucial to inform your doctor about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.

What precautions should be taken with AMPOXIN KID TABLET?

  • Do not take this medicine if there is a known allergy to Ampicillin, Cloxacillin, other penicillin antibiotics, or similar antibiotics like Cefixime, Cefpodoxime, or Amoxicillin.
  • Inform the doctor if the patient has a history of kidney problems, liver disease, asthma, heart issues, blood disorders, or gastrointestinal diseases like colitis.
  • It should not be given to newborn babies suffering from jaundice.
  • Complete the entire course of the antibiotic as prescribed; stopping early can lead to treatment failure, bacterial resistance, or recurrence of infection.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol as it may exaggerate stomach-related symptoms like nausea and vomiting.
  • This medicine is strictly for internal use and should never be used for eye infections; direct eye contact must be avoided.

What happens if a dose of AMPOXIN KID TABLET is missed?

If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped, and the regular dosing schedule continued. Never take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should AMPOXIN KID TABLET be stored?

AMPOXIN KID TABLET should be stored in a cool, dry place below 25°C or 30°C, away from sunlight and moisture. It should be kept out of the reach of children. If it's an oral suspension, once mixed with water, it should be refrigerated (between 2-8°C) and any unused portion discarded after 14 days (or 7 days if left at room temperature).
