Description

OPTIVE EYE DROP 10 ML

Optive Eye Drop, manufactured by Allergan India Pvt. Ltd., is an ophthalmic lubricant designed to provide soothing and long-lasting relief from dry, irritated eyes. This product functions as an artificial tear solution, mimicking natural tears to restore moisture and comfort to the ocular surface.

Composition

  • Active Ingredients: Carboxymethylcellulose (Carmellose) 0.5% w/v (5 mg/mL)
  • Other Ingredients: Glycerine (0.9%), purified water, and a preservative known as Purite® (stabilized oxychloro complex 0.01%), which breaks down into natural tear components upon contact with the eye. It may also contain boric acid, calcium chloride dihydrate, erythritol, levocarnitine, magnesium chloride hexahydrate, potassium chloride, sodium borate decahydrate, and sodium citrate dihydrate.

Uses

Optive Eye Drop is primarily prescribed for:

  • Temporary relief of burning, irritation, and discomfort due to dryness of the eye (Dry Eye Syndrome).
  • Providing lubrication and hydration to the eyes.
  • Protecting the eyes from further irritation.
  • Alleviating dryness caused by environmental factors such as wind, sun, air conditioning, and prolonged computer use.
  • Lubricating and re-wetting soft and rigid gas-permeable contact lenses.
  • May be used as an ocular lubricant following ocular surgery (e.g., LASIK).

Dosage and Administration

  • Instill 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed, or as directed by your healthcare professional.
  • This medicine is for external ophthalmic use only and should not be ingested.
  • To administer, tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch, and gently squeeze the dropper to instill the drops. Blink several times to ensure even distribution.
  • To prevent contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper to your eye, eyelids, or any other surface.
  • If using other eye medications, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications to prevent dilution.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using Optive Eye Drop and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Side Effects

Common side effects are usually temporary and may include:

  • Eye irritation (burning, stinging, discomfort)
  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Eye pain or itching
  • Redness of the eye
  • Eye discharge or medication residue

If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Precautions

  • Do not use Optive Eye Drop if you are allergic to carboxymethylcellulose or any other ingredient.
  • Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery immediately after use if you experience temporary blurred vision.
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have glaucoma, an eye infection, or are taking any other medications.
  • Discontinue use and consult a doctor if eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness, or irritation occurs, or if the condition worsens or persists for more than 72 hours.
  • Do not use the solution if it changes color or becomes cloudy.

Storage

  • Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.
  • Maintain storage temperature at or below 25°C (some sources indicate below 30°C or between 15°C and 30°C).
  • Keep out of the reach and sight of children and pets.
  • Discard any remaining solution 1 month (or 30 days) after opening the bottle to prevent contamination. Replace the cap tightly after each use.
Frequently asked questions

What is Optive Eye Drop 10 ML used for?

Optive Eye Drop 10 ML is an ocular lubricant used to relieve symptoms of dry eyes, such as burning, irritation, and discomfort. This dryness can be caused by various factors including wind, sun exposure, prolonged computer use, air-conditioned environments, or even following eye surgeries like LASIK or cataract surgery. It helps to hydrate the eyes and acts as a protectant against further irritation. Some formulations can also be used to lubricate and re-wet soft and rigid gas-permeable contact lenses.

How does Optive Eye Drop 10 ML work?

Optive Eye Drop contains active ingredients like carboxymethylcellulose (also known as carmellose) and glycerin, which work similarly to natural tears. It provides lubrication and moisture to the surface of the eye, helps maintain the tear film, and restores the eye's natural osmotic balance. The formulation often has a high viscosity, which helps prevent tears from draining too quickly, increasing their retention time on the eye's surface for longer-lasting comfort.

What is the usual dosage for Optive Eye Drop 10 ML?

The typical dosage is to instill 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed. It can be used as frequently as required or as prescribed by your doctor, but ideally, it should not be used more than 4 times a day unless advised otherwise.

What are the possible side effects of Optive Eye Drop 10 ML?

While generally safe, some individuals may experience side effects such as eye irritation (including burning and discomfort), eye pain, itching, redness, temporary blurred vision, eye discharge, or eyelid swelling. These side effects are usually temporary and tend to resolve on their own. If any symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Is Optive Eye Drop 10 ML safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There is limited information available regarding the effects of Optive Eye Drop during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is generally considered safe if recommended by your doctor, as topical ophthalmic medications typically have low systemic absorption. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using this medicine.

Can Optive Eye Drop 10 ML be taken with other medications?

Optive Eye Drop is less likely to interact with other medications because it is applied externally to the eyes. However, if you are using other eye drops or ointments, it is recommended to wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between applications to prevent dilution and ensure each medication works effectively. Always inform your doctor if you are taking any other medications.

What precautions should be taken while using Optive Eye Drop 10 ML?

  • This medicine is for external ophthalmic use only and should not be swallowed.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the drops.
  • To avoid contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper to your eye, eyelids, or any other surface.
  • Replace the cap tightly immediately after use.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before instilling the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, unless the product instructions specify it is compatible for use with contact lenses.
  • Do not use the solution if it changes color or appears cloudy.
  • Since temporary blurred vision may occur after application, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until your vision has cleared.

What happens if a dose of Optive Eye Drop 10 ML is missed?

If you miss a dose, instill the drops as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should Optive Eye Drop 10 ML be stored?

Store Optive Eye Drop below 25°C (or between 15°-25°C) in a clean and dry place. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets, and away from direct sunlight. Discard any remaining solution after 30 days (or 4 weeks) of opening the bottle to prevent contamination, even if some medicine is left.
