Description

RIZACT 5 Tablet

RIZACT 5 Tablet, manufactured by Cipla Ltd., is a medication prescribed for the acute treatment of migraine headaches.

Composition

Each uncoated tablet contains Rizatriptan benzoate equivalent to 5 mg of Rizatriptan.

Uses

RIZACT 5 is primarily used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura, in adults. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the brain and decreasing substances that trigger headache pain, sensitivity to light and sound, and nausea, thereby relieving migraine symptoms. It is important to note that this medicine does not prevent or reduce the number of migraine attacks; it only treats a headache that has already begun.

Dosage and Administration

RIZACT 5 Tablet should be taken orally as a whole with a glass of water, as advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food, though taking it with food may delay its action. Doses should be separated by at least 2 hours, and no more than 30 mg should be taken within a 24-hour period. For patients also receiving propranolol, a 5 mg dose of RIZACT should be used, with a maximum of 3 doses in any 24-hour period.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include dizziness, tiredness, drowsiness, dry mouth, vomiting, diarrhea, and a sensation of pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen. Most of these side effects are temporary and usually resolve over time. Serious, though rare, adverse events include acute myocardial infarction and other cardiac or cerebrovascular issues. Symptoms of overdose can include dizziness, fainting, drowsiness, shortness of breath, and rapid heartbeat.

Precautions

RIZACT 5 is not recommended for individuals with severe liver or kidney disease, heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or certain types of migraine like hemiplegic or basilar migraine. Caution is advised during pregnancy, as there is evidence of risk to the developing baby. Breastfeeding should be avoided for 24 hours after treatment. This medicine may cause dizziness and drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it may worsen migraine symptoms or increase drowsiness. Inform your doctor about all existing health conditions and other medications, especially other triptans, ergot-containing medicines, SSRIs, and beta-blockers like propranolol, due to potential interactions. RIZACT 5 is not recommended for children below 18 years.

Storage

Store RIZACT 5 Tablet at room temperature, ideally below 30°C. Keep it away from extreme heat, light, moisture, and out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

RIZACT 5 Tablet, manufactured by Cipla Ltd., contains Rizatriptan (5mg) as its active ingredient and is used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks in adults. It is a selective serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist.

Here are some frequently asked questions about RIZACT 5 Tablet:

What is RIZACT 5 Tablet used for?

RIZACT 5 Tablet is primarily used to relieve the symptoms of acute migraine headaches, with or without aura, in adults. It helps to manage severe migraines and decreases associated symptoms like sensitivity to light and sound, and nausea. It is not intended to prevent migraines or for the management of hemiplegic or basilar migraines.

How does RIZACT 5 Tablet work?

RIZACT 5 Tablet works by activating specific serotonin (5-HT) 1B/1D receptors located on blood vessels inside the brain and sensory nerves. This activation leads to the narrowing (constriction) of dilated cranial blood vessels, which are thought to contribute to migraine pain. It also helps to inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides, further reducing migraine symptoms.

What is the usual dosage of RIZACT 5 Tablet?

The dosage of RIZACT 5 Tablet should be precisely followed as prescribed by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food may delay its action by about an hour. Doses should be separated by at least 2 hours, and no more than 30 mg should be taken within any 24-hour period. For patients taking propranolol, a 5 mg dose of RIZACT should be used, up to a maximum of 3 doses in any 24-hour period.

What are the possible side effects of RIZACT 5 Tablet?

Common side effects can include dizziness, tiredness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pain/pressure sensation, asthenia (weakness/fatigue), paresthesia (tingling/pricking sensation), and hypoesthesia (numbness). Most side effects are temporary and usually resolve on their own. If any severe or persistent side effects occur, consult your doctor.

Is RIZACT 5 Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Caution is advised when taking RIZACT 5 Tablet during pregnancy. Components of this medicine are known to be harmful to the fetus, and it is generally recommended to avoid it in pregnant women, or only use if the potential benefit outweighs the risk.

Breastfeeding: Caution should be exercised while breastfeeding. While limited human data suggest low levels in breastmilk, it is generally advised to avoid breastfeeding for 24 hours after taking this medicine to minimize potential infant risk.

Can RIZACT 5 Tablet be taken with other medications?

RIZACT 5 Tablet can interact with several medications. It should not be taken with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or within two weeks of discontinuing them due to the risk of increased rizatriptan concentration. Concomitant use with other migraine medications like sumatriptan, zolmitriptan, or naratriptan can lead to heart problems and high blood pressure. Beta-blockers, such as propranolol, can increase rizatriptan levels, requiring a lower dose of RIZACT (5 mg). Co-administration with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine and sertraline may lead to symptoms such as weakness, hyperreflexia, and incoordination. Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking before starting RIZACT 5 Tablet.

What precautions should be taken?

Avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience dizziness or somnolence (sleepiness) after taking this medicine. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it might worsen migraine symptoms or increase drowsiness. RIZACT 5 Tablet is not recommended for individuals with certain pre-existing conditions such as ischemic heart disease, coronary artery disease, uncontrolled hypertension, severe liver disease, or peripheral vascular disease. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is required. It is not recommended for children below 18 years of age.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If a dose of RIZACT 5 Tablet is missed, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should RIZACT 5 Tablet be stored?

RIZACT 5 Tablet should be stored at room temperature, ideally below 30°C, in a cool and dry place. It should be kept securely out of reach of children and pets. Always check the expiry date and use the medicine before it expires.
