MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS by CIPLA LTD

Name

Brand Name: MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS Common Names: Moxifloxacin and Loteprednol Etabonate Ophthalmic Solution

Composition

MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS is a fixed-dose combination medication containing two active ingredients:

  • Moxifloxacin (0.5% w/v): A fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting enzymes essential for their growth and survival, such as DNA gyrase and Topoisomerase II and IV.
  • Loteprednol Etabonate (0.5% w/v): A corticosteroid that reduces inflammation by blocking the production of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause redness, swelling, and itching in the eye.

Uses

This combination eye drop is prescribed for:

  • Treatment of bacterial eye infections and associated inflammation.
  • Reduction of inflammation in the eye.
  • Prevention of post-operative bacterial infections and management of ocular inflammatory conditions such as blepharitis, episcleritis, scleritis, keratitis, iritis (inflammation of the iris), and uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye).
  • Effectively treats eye inflammation caused by allergies, shingles, severe acne, eye injury, radiation, and chemical burns.

Dosage and Administration

MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS are for topical ophthalmic use only and should be used as prescribed by a doctor.

  • Instill MOXICIP LP into the affected eye(s) following the dosage and frequency prescribed by your doctor.
  • Typical usage may be 2-3 times a day for at least a week, or as directed by the doctor.
  • To administer: Tilt your head back slightly, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch, and apply the prescribed number of drops.
  • Close your eyes gently and avoid blinking or pressing on the eye for a few minutes to allow absorption.
  • Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination.
  • Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve to ensure the infection is completely cured and to prevent recurrence. If other eye drops are prescribed, wait at least 5-15 minutes between applications.
  • If a dose is missed, instill it as soon as remembered, but if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Blurred vision.
  • Eye discomfort or irritation, including stinging or burning sensation.
  • Redness in the eyes (ocular hyperemia, conjunctival hyperaemia).
  • Dry eye.
  • Photophobia (sensitivity to light).

Serious side effects, though rare, can include increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma), vision changes, or new or worsening infections. Seek immediate medical attention if severe pain, vision loss, or swelling occurs.

Precautions

  • Contraindications: Do not use if allergic to moxifloxacin, loteprednol, or any other ingredients. Contraindicated in viral eye infections (such as herpes simplex, vaccinia, varicella), fungal diseases of ocular structures, or mycobacterial infection of the eye.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use with caution and only if considered essential by your doctor. Discuss potential risks and benefits.
  • Contact Lenses: If you wear contact lenses, inform your doctor. MOXICIP LP may contain additives like Benzalkonium chloride that can change the lens's color. It is generally advised not to wear contact lenses until the infection clears up or if temporary eye redness occurs after administration. Wait at least 15 minutes after using the eye drops to reinsert contact lenses.
  • Driving and Machinery: MOXICIP LP may cause temporary blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision clears.
  • Drug-Drug Interactions: No significant drug-drug interactions have been reported, but it is advisable to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.
  • Drug-Disease Interactions: Use with caution in patients with a history of hypersensitivity reactions to fluoroquinolones or corticosteroids. Avoid use in patients with viral infections of the cornea and conjunctiva, as it may aggravate them.
  • Children: Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients are not fully established, and it is not recommended for use in newborns.
  • Prolonged Use: Do not use for longer than recommended by your doctor, as prolonged use may increase the risk of cataracts and secondary infections.

Frequently asked questions

MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS is a combination medication containing Moxifloxacin (an antibiotic) and Loteprednol (a corticosteroid), used to treat various eye conditions.

What is MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS used for?

MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS are used to treat bacterial eye infections and associated inflammation. This includes conditions like bacterial conjunctivitis, and inflammation caused by allergies, shingles, severe acne, iritis, uveitis, eye injury, radiation, and chemical burns. It is also prescribed to reduce swelling after eye surgeries and to prevent post-operative bacterial infections. It is important to note that it is effective only against bacterial infections and not against infections caused by viruses or fungi.

How does MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS work?

This medication combines two active ingredients: Moxifloxacin and Loteprednol. Moxifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting enzymes crucial for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, thus preventing their growth and survival. Loteprednol is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation by blocking the production of chemical messengers, such as prostaglandins, that cause redness, swelling, and itching in the eye. Together, they work to treat and prevent the spread of bacterial eye infections and reduce inflammation and pain.

What is the usual dosage?

The dosage of MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS should be strictly followed as prescribed by your doctor. For general ocular infections, one drop four times a day for seven days is often advised, or as directed by the doctor. For post-operative inflammation and infection prevention after surgery, typically one drop four times a day is instilled starting one day before surgery and continuing for about 15 days after. Always follow your doctor's specific instructions for the duration and frequency of use.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS may include redness in the eyes, blurred vision, burning or stinging sensation in the eye, eye discomfort, and irritation. These side effects are usually temporary and tend to resolve over time. Rarely, prolonged use might lead to increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma) or cataracts. If you experience persistent visual disturbances, severe pain, vision loss, or worsening symptoms, consult your doctor immediately.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS should be used during pregnancy only if considered essential by your doctor, as adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are not available. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is important to inform your doctor, who will weigh the potential benefits against the risks. For breastfeeding mothers, caution is advised, and your doctor will determine if the benefits outweigh the risks, as it's unknown if topical administration results in sufficient systemic absorption to appear in human milk.

Can it be taken with other medications?

While MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS are applied externally and are less likely to interact significantly with systemic medications, it is always advisable to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Specific interactions to be aware of include anti-HIV drugs like ritonavir and cobicistat, which may increase the effect of MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS. Caution is also advised if you are taking other eye drops for conditions like increased intraocular pressure or anticholinergic medications. If you need to use other eye drops or ointments, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications.

What precautions should be taken?

Do not use MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS for longer than prescribed, as prolonged use can increase the risk of cataracts and secondary infections. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any surface to prevent contamination of the solution. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before instilling the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the medicine may contain additives that can affect lenses. MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS can cause temporary blurred vision; therefore, avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision clears. Inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, a history of hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones or corticosteroids, or eye diseases caused by viruses (like herpes simplex), mycobacteria, or fungi, as MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS may be contraindicated in these cases.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS, instill it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill extra drops or double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should it be stored?

Store MOXICIP LP EYE DROPS in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Do not use the medicine past its expiry date.
