Frequently asked questions

What is RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT used for?

RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT is primarily used to treat productive coughs associated with mucus, chest congestion, and breathing difficulties. It is commonly prescribed for respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It helps in loosening thick mucus and clearing the airways to make breathing easier. This medication is not intended for dry coughs.

How does RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT work?

This medicine is a combination of three active ingredients: Levosalbutamol, Ambroxol, and Guaifenesin.

  • Levosalbutamol acts as a bronchodilator, which relaxes the muscles in the airways of the lungs, helping to widen them and improve airflow.
  • Ambroxol is a mucolytic agent that thins and loosens phlegm (mucus) in the lungs, windpipe, and nose, making it easier to cough out.
  • Guaifenesin is an expectorant that works by increasing the volume of fluid in the airways and reducing the stickiness of mucus, further aiding its removal from the airways.

What is the usual dosage of RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT?

The dosage of RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT should always be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will determine the correct dose and duration based on your medical condition, age, and response to treatment. It is typically taken 2-3 times daily. Always use the measuring cup or spoon provided with the pack for accurate dosing, and avoid using regular household spoons. For adults, a common single maximum dose is 5 ml, three times daily. For children between 2-12 years, a single maximum dose of 2.5 ml, three times daily, may be prescribed.

What are the possible side effects of RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT?

Like all medicines, RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, headache, dizziness, skin rash, tremor, stomach upset, diarrhea, palpitations (fluttering in the chest), muscle cramps, and increased heart rate. Most of these side effects are temporary and usually resolve over time. However, if they persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Is RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is advised to inform your doctor before using RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT. This medicine should be used with extreme caution during pregnancy, and only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, as there is limited information available on its safety in pregnancy. For breastfeeding mothers, there are limited studies, so it should be taken with care, and potential risks and benefits should be discussed with your doctor.

Can RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT be taken with other medications?

It is important to inform your doctor about all other medicines, supplements, and herbal preparations you are currently taking or might take, to avoid possible interactions. RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT may interact with certain medications, including:

  • Beta-blockers (e.g., atenolol, propranolol), which may reduce the effectiveness of the bronchodilator action of levosalbutamol.
  • Diuretics (e.g., furosemide, torsemide), which might increase potassium levels in your body.
  • Cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin), potentially increasing the risk of side effects like irregular heartbeat.
  • Corticosteroids (e.g., betamethasone, prednisolone), which may increase the risk of certain side effects. This medicine should also not be combined with cough suppressants.

What precautions should be taken while using RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT?

Several precautions should be observed when taking RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT:

  • Inform your doctor if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicine.
  • Use with caution if you have a history of fits, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), stomach ulcers, or kidney or liver problems. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is recommended for diabetic patients.
  • As it may cause dizziness or drowsiness, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you feel affected.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medicine, as it might increase the risk of side effects.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to help loosen mucus.
  • This medicine is generally not recommended for children below 6 years of age unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.

What happens if a dose of RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT be stored?

Keep RESPIRA LS EXPECTORANT out of the sight and reach of children. Store it below 30°C in a clean and dry place. Ensure the bottle is tightly sealed when not in use and protect it from extreme light and moisture.
