Description

SUMO GEL 30 GM is a topical pain relief medication manufactured by Alkem Laboratories Ltd.

Composition

SUMO GEL contains a blend of active ingredients designed to provide targeted pain and inflammation relief:

  • Diclofenac Diethylamine: A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), typically 1% or 1.16% w/w, that reduces pain, swelling, and inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.
  • Linseed Oil (Virgin Linseed Oil): Approximately 3% w/w, known for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to soothe and moisturize the skin.
  • Menthol: Around 5% or 5.5% w/w, acts as a counter-irritant, providing a cooling sensation followed by warmth, which helps alleviate pain.
  • Methyl Salicylate: Typically 10% or 12% w/w, a counter-irritant that causes a sensation of warmth, increasing blood flow to the affected area and relieving muscle and joint pain.
  • Other Ingredients: Includes Benzyl Alcohol IP and a gel base.

Uses

SUMO GEL is prescribed for the treatment and relief of pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with various musculoskeletal conditions. It is commonly used for:

  • Muscle pain, joint pain, and backache.
  • Sprains, strains, tendonitis, and bursitis.
  • Pain and stiffness due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and osteochondrosis with radicular syndrome.
  • Neck and shoulder pain.

Dosage and Administration

SUMO GEL is for external use only.

  • Apply a small or thin layer of the gel to the affected area.
  • Gently massage until it is absorbed into the skin.
  • Typically, it is applied 3-4 times daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after application.
  • Avoid applying on open wounds, cuts, burns, or broken skin.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes; rinse immediately with water if accidental contact occurs.
  • Allow at least 10 minutes for the medicine to dry before wearing clothes or gloves over the treated area.
  • Do not wrap, bandage, or apply external heat to the treated area unless advised by a doctor.
  • Avoid applying directly after bathing or shaving to prevent severe skin irritation.

Side Effects

Common side effects are generally mild and temporary, including:

  • Burning sensation.
  • Itching, redness, stinging, dryness, or irritation at the application site.
  • Rash. Serious side effects are rare but can occur, especially with excessive use or accidental ingestion. These may include gastrointestinal issues, drowsiness, or severe skin reactions. In case of accidental swallowing, symptoms like changes in urine amount, severe stomach pain, and slow/shallow breathing may occur, requiring immediate medical attention.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not use if allergic to any components of SUMO GEL, diclofenac, aspirin, or other NSAIDs.
  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use. Avoid prolonged use on large skin areas during pregnancy or breastfeeding, although topical absorption is generally minimal.

  • Medical Conditions: Caution is advised for patients with gastrointestinal ulceration, impaired cardiac, renal, or hepatic function, asthma, fluid retention, or hypertension. Monitoring of liver and kidney function may be necessary during prolonged therapy.

Frequently asked questions

SUMO GEL 30 GM by ALKEM LABORATORIES LTD

What is Sumo Gel used for?

Sumo Gel is a topical pain relief gel primarily used to alleviate pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with various musculoskeletal conditions. These include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, backache, joint pain, muscle pain, sprains, strains, tendonitis, bursitis, neck pain, shoulder pain, and sciatica.

How does Sumo Gel work?

Sumo Gel contains a combination of active ingredients: Diclofenac, Linseed Oil, Menthol, and Methyl Salicylate.

  • Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, which are chemical messengers responsible for pain and inflammation.
  • Linseed Oil has anti-inflammatory properties, helps reduce inflammation, improves skin health, and aids in the penetration of Diclofenac through the skin.
  • Menthol provides a cooling sensation on the skin, which then turns into warmth, acting as a counter-irritant to distract from pain and improve blood circulation.
  • Methyl Salicylate also acts as a counter-irritant, causing a sensation of warmth and temporarily relieving pain by stimulating nerve endings. Together, these ingredients work to reduce pain, swelling, and stiffness, improving mobility.

What is the usual dosage for Sumo Gel?

Sumo Gel is for external use only. A thin layer of the gel should be applied topically to the affected area and gently rubbed in. It is typically recommended to be used 3-4 times a day, or as directed by your physician. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after application. Do not apply it to open wounds, cuts, burns, or mucous membranes.

What are the possible side effects of Sumo Gel?

Sumo Gel is generally well-tolerated. Common and mild side effects may include burning, stinging, itching, rash, redness, or dryness at the application site. Rare but more serious adverse effects can include irritability, blurred vision, anemia, exfoliative dermatitis, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. If side effects are persistent or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is Sumo Gel safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

For pregnant individuals, Sumo Gel should be used only under strict doctor's guidance, as safety during pregnancy has not been definitively established and it may harm the fetus. While breastfeeding, it may be used based on minimal maternal systemic absorption, but it's advisable to consult your doctor, and avoid prolonged use over large skin areas.

Can Sumo Gel be taken with other medications?

Sumo Gel is a topical medication, and while normally not significantly affected by other medicines, you should inform your doctor about any other medications or topical preparations you are using to avoid potential interactions. It should not be used concomitantly with sunscreens, cosmetics, lotions, moisturizers, insect repellents, or other topical medications on the same skin sites.

What precautions should be taken when using Sumo Gel?

  • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, and mucous membranes. In case of accidental contact, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Do not apply the gel on open skin wounds, infections, inflammations, exfoliative dermatitis, cuts, or burns.
  • Do not cover the treated area with tight bandages or apply external heat unless specifically instructed by a doctor.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of hypersensitivity to any of its components (Diclofenac, Methyl Salicylate, Menthol), or other NSAIDs (like aspirin).
  • Patients with renal impairment, hepatic impairment, asthma (especially NSAID-induced asthma), fluid retention, or GI bleeding should use it with caution and under medical advice.
  • It is not recommended for use in children less than 14 years of age unless directed by a doctor.

What happens if a dose of Sumo Gel is missed?

If you miss a dose of Sumo Gel, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra quantities to make up for a missed dose.

How should Sumo Gel be stored?

Sumo Gel should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat, typically below 25°C or 30°C. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets.
