Description
GLICLAZ M TABLET (15 TAB)
Name: Gliclaz M Tablet Manufacturer: KHANDELWAL LABORATORIES PVT. LTD.
Composition: GLICLAZ M TABLET contains a combination of two active ingredients:
- Gliclazide (80 mg)
- Metformin (500 mg)
Uses: GLICLAZ M TABLET is primarily used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It is prescribed when dietary measures, physical exercise, and weight loss alone are not sufficient to control blood glucose levels, or when blood sugar is not adequately controlled by a single diabetes medication.
- Mechanism of Action: Gliclazide stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, a hormone that lowers blood sugar levels, and improves the body's response to insulin. Metformin works by decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver, reducing sugar absorption in the intestines, and enhancing the body's ability to use insulin more effectively. Together, these actions help to prevent blood glucose levels from rising too high.
- Benefits: This medicine helps to control blood sugar levels, reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications such as heart disease, nerve damage, kidney problems, blindness, and stroke, and improves overall energy levels and well-being.
Dosage and Administration: GLICLAZ M TABLET should be taken as advised by your physician.
- Timing: It is typically taken once or twice daily with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. It is recommended to take it at the same time each day for best results.
- Method: Swallow the medicine as a whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew the tablet.
- Individualized Dose: The exact dose and duration of therapy depend on the individual's medical condition, blood sugar levels, and response to treatment, and should be determined by a doctor. Do not take more than the prescribed dose.
Side Effects: Most side effects do not require medical attention and resolve over time. However, consult your doctor if they persist or worsen.
- Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain (gastric pain), constipation, metallic taste in the mouth, headache, dizziness, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), rash, pruritus, urticaria, erythema, and flushing. Some individuals may experience weight gain.
- Serious Side Effects: A rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis (an excess of lactic acid in the blood) can occur. Long-term use may also lead to Vitamin B12 deficiency. Report any deep or rapid breathing, persistent nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain to your doctor immediately.
Precautions:
- Contraindications: GLICLAZ M TABLET is not recommended for use in individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis (high levels of acid in the blood), severe kidney disease, severe liver failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or known allergies to Gliclazide, Metformin, or any other ingredients in the medicine. It is also contraindicated in patients with heart conditions like congestive heart failure.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The use of GLICLAZ M TABLET is not recommended during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. It is also probably unsafe during breastfeeding, as it is not known if the medicine or its metabolites are excreted in breast milk. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
- Alcohol Consumption: Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medicine, as it can significantly increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and lactic acidosis.
- Other Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking, as they may interact with GLICLAZ M TABLET. Particular caution is needed with angiotensin enzyme inhibitors, other antidiabetic agents, beta-blockers, antifungals, H2 blockers, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and sulphonamides.
- Monitoring: Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is crucial during treatment. Your doctor may also advise blood tests to monitor blood cell counts and liver function.
- Driving and Machinery: Your ability to drive or operate machinery may be affected if your blood sugar is too low or too high. Use caution.
- Children and Elderly: GLICLAZ M TABLET is not recommended for use in children as safety and effectiveness have not been established. Use with caution in geriatric patients.
Storage: Store GLICLAZ M TABLET in a cool and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep it at room temperature, ideally between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Ensure the medicine is kept out of sight and reach of children. Do not store it in heat or direct sunlight.
Frequently asked questions
GLICLAZ M TABLET (15 TAB) by KHANDELWAL LABORATORIES PVT. LTD. is a combination medicine containing Gliclazide and Metformin, primarily used to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults. It helps control high blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient.
What is Gliclaz M Tablet used for?
Gliclaz M Tablet is used to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults. It helps in controlling blood sugar levels and reducing the risk of diabetes-related complications such as kidney damage, blindness, nerve damage, heart attack, and stroke.
How does Gliclaz M Tablet work?
This medicine combines two active ingredients: Gliclazide and Metformin. Gliclazide works by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin. Metformin works by lowering the production of glucose in the liver, delaying the absorption of glucose from the intestines, and increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin. Together, they help prevent blood glucose levels from rising excessively.
What is the usual dosage for Gliclaz M Tablet?
Gliclaz M Tablet is typically taken orally with food, usually once or twice daily, at the same time each day for optimal results. The exact dosage is determined by your doctor and may be adjusted based on your blood sugar levels and response to treatment. It is important to swallow the tablet whole and not to chew, crush, or break it.
What are the possible side effects of Gliclaz M Tablet?
Common side effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), taste change, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, upper respiratory symptoms, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, sweating, hunger pangs, and weight gain. Rarely, more serious side effects like lactic acidosis or Vitamin B12 deficiency (with long-term use) can occur. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.
Is Gliclaz M Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Gliclaz M Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy due to limited safety information and potential risks; insulin and Metformin are often considered safer alternatives. Similarly, Gliclazide is usually not recommended during breastfeeding as it may pass into breast milk and could lower the baby's blood sugar. Metformin is considered to have a minimal effect on breastfed infants. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Can Gliclaz M Tablet be taken with other medications?
Inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions. Taking Gliclaz M Tablet with other anti-diabetic medications may increase the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). It may also increase the effects of blood-thinning medications like warfarin.
What precautions should be taken while taking Gliclaz M Tablet?
Always take this medicine with food to minimize stomach upset. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is essential. Avoid alcohol consumption as it can significantly increase the risk of low blood sugar and lactic acidosis. Be aware of the symptoms of low blood sugar (e.g., sweating, dizziness, hunger pangs) and always carry a quick source of sugar. Do not stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor. Exercise caution while driving or operating machinery as the medicine can cause dizziness or low blood sugar. This tablet is not recommended if you have diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney or liver problems, or certain acute conditions.
What happens if a dose of Gliclaz M Tablet is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
How should Gliclaz M Tablet be stored?
Gliclaz M Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. It is recommended to store it below 30°C.
