Frequently asked questions
QUTAN 100MG TABLET contains Quetiapine, an atypical antipsychotic medication. It is manufactured by Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd..
What is Qutan 100 MG Tablet used for?
Qutan 100 MG Tablet is primarily used to treat mental health disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It helps manage symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, extreme mood swings, and changes in energy levels and behavior. For bipolar disorder, it can treat depressive and manic episodes and is sometimes used as a maintenance treatment. Additionally, the extended-release form of Quetiapine can be used with other antidepressants to treat major depressive disorder.
How does Qutan 100 MG Tablet work?
Qutan 100 MG Tablet, containing Quetiapine, belongs to a class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics. It is believed to work by balancing certain chemical messengers in the brain, specifically serotonin and dopamine, which are known to affect thoughts and mood. By modulating these neurotransmitters, it helps restore balance in the brain, improving thought processes, mood regulation, and overall mental well-being.
What is the usual dosage of Qutan 100 MG Tablet?
The dosage of Quetiapine varies depending on the condition being treated, the formulation (immediate-release or extended-release), and individual patient factors like age and medical history. Your doctor will determine the appropriate starting dose and may gradually adjust it. For instance, in bipolar depression, a typical starting dose might be 50 mg once daily at bedtime, which can be increased to a maintenance dose of 300 mg once daily. For schizophrenia, starting doses can be lower and gradually increased. It is crucial to follow your doctor's specific instructions and not adjust the dose yourself.
What are the possible side effects of Qutan 100 MG Tablet?
Common side effects of Qutan 100 MG Tablet can include drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness, headache, dry mouth, constipation, upset stomach, and weight gain. More serious, but less common, side effects can include suicidal thoughts or actions, movement problems (like tardive dyskinesia), high blood sugar, high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, changes in heart rhythm, and a temporary decrease in white blood cells. If you experience any severe or concerning side effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Is Qutan 100 MG Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: There is no conclusive evidence that Quetiapine in early pregnancy will harm the baby. However, taking it in the weeks before delivery may sometimes cause temporary withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. You may also be at a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes. It is important to discuss any pregnancy or plans to become pregnant with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits against risks and ensure proper monitoring.
Breastfeeding: Quetiapine passes into breast milk in small amounts and is generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, especially at doses less than 400 mg daily, based on limited studies. However, it's advised to monitor the infant for drowsiness or other unusual symptoms. Some sources recommend against breastfeeding while taking quetiapine due to a lack of robust data and the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants. Always consult your doctor or healthcare provider regarding breastfeeding while on this medication.
Can Qutan 100 MG Tablet be taken with other medications?
Quetiapine can interact with many other medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal products. Taking Quetiapine with certain medications can increase the risk of side effects, make Quetiapine less effective, or make the interacting medication less effective. For example, it can increase drowsiness when taken with other medications that cause sleepiness, such as antihistamines, sleep medications, opioids, benzodiazepines, and muscle relaxers. Certain antifungal drugs, HIV drugs, and some antidepressants can increase Quetiapine levels, while anticonvulsants, rifampin, and St. John's wort can decrease its effectiveness. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are currently taking.
What precautions should be taken while taking Qutan 100 MG Tablet?
Several precautions should be taken while on Qutan 100 MG Tablet. It can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and problems with coordination, increasing the risk of falls, so avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery until you know how it affects you. Alcohol should be avoided as it can increase sleepiness. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should also be avoided as they can affect how the medicine works. Regular monitoring of blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure may be necessary. Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart problems, diabetes, seizures, or liver disease. Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms.
What happens if a dose of Qutan 100 MG Tablet is missed?
If you miss a dose of Qutan 100 MG Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses to make up for a missed one, as this could lead to dangerous levels of the drug in your body. If you miss two or more doses, contact your doctor for advice.
How should Qutan 100 MG Tablet be stored?
Qutan 100 MG Tablet (Quetiapine) should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not store outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Some liquid formulations, if compounded, may require refrigeration.
