Description
MOSI EYE OINT - 5GM
Name: MOSI EYE Ointment (Brand Name), Moxifloxacin Ophthalmic Ointment (Common Name)
Composition: MOSI EYE Ointment contains Moxifloxacin 0.5% w/w as its active ingredient. Moxifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
Uses: This medicine is primarily prescribed for the treatment of bacterial eye infections. These include bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and corneal ulcers, as well as blepharitis. It works by inhibiting the growth and spread of bacteria by stopping the action of a bacterial enzyme called DNA gyrase, which is essential for bacterial replication and repair. It is not effective against viral or fungal infections.
Dosage and Administration: MOSI EYE Ointment is for external use only. The typical dosage guidance for moxifloxacin ophthalmic preparations is to apply a half-inch ribbon of ointment or instill one drop into the affected eye(s) 2 to 3 times a day for 7 days, or as advised by a doctor. Patients should wash their hands before and after use. To apply, gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pocket and squeeze the prescribed amount of ointment into this space. Avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve to ensure the infection is fully cured and to prevent recurrence.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Eye discomfort, irritation, burning sensation, eye pain, dry eyes, watery eyes, blurred vision, redness, and itching.
- Serious Side Effects: Though rare, serious allergic reactions such as severe itching, rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and trouble breathing (anaphylaxis) can occur. If any signs of severe allergic reaction or worsening infection occur, discontinue use and seek immediate medical attention.
Precautions:
- Do not wear contact lenses if you have signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis or while using this medication, as bacteria can adhere to lenses and worsen the infection. Consult a doctor about when it is safe to resume wearing contact lenses.
- Prolonged use of antibiotics may lead to an overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If super-infection occurs, discontinue use and seek alternative therapy.
- Inform your doctor about any history of allergies to moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or any components of the ointment.
- Pregnancy and Nursing: Use during pregnancy and by nursing mothers should be with caution and only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk, as adequate studies in pregnant women are lacking.
- Pediatric Use: The safety and effectiveness in infants younger than 1 year of age have not been established.
Storage: Store the medicine in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, at room temperature (between 2°C to 25°C or 36°F to 77°F). Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets. Do not freeze the medicine. Keep the container tightly closed.
Frequently asked questions
What is MOSI EYE OINT used for?
MOSI EYE OINT is an antibiotic eye ointment primarily used to treat bacterial eye infections, such as bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and corneal ulcers. It can also be used for post-surgical prophylaxis to prevent bacterial infections after eye surgeries.
How does MOSI EYE OINT work?
MOSI EYE OINT contains moxifloxacin, a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by inhibiting vital bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. By blocking these enzymes, moxifloxacin interferes with bacterial DNA synthesis, leading to the death of the bacterial cells and effectively clearing the infection.
What is the usual dosage for MOSI EYE OINT?
The dosage of MOSI EYE OINT should be strictly as prescribed by your doctor. Typically, a thin ribbon (approximately half an inch) of the ointment is applied to the affected eye(s) two or three times a day. The exact dosage and duration may vary based on the severity of the condition and the individual's response to the medication. It is crucial not to exceed the prescribed dosage without consulting your doctor.
What are the possible side effects of MOSI EYE OINT?
Common side effects may include ocular discomfort, dry eyes, decreased visual acuity (blurred vision), inflammation of the cornea (keratitis), itchiness, burning sensation, irritation, eye pain, and redness. These are usually temporary. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) can occur, presenting with symptoms like trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, rash, itching, or hives, which require immediate medical attention.
Is MOSI EYE OINT safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Caution is advised when using MOSI EYE OINT during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are not available. It should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. For nursing mothers, it is advisable to exercise caution and consult your doctor before using this medicine.
Can MOSI EYE OINT be taken with other medications?
No specific drug-drug interaction studies have been conducted with MOSI EYE OINT. However, caution should be exercised when using it alongside other medications. If you are using other eye medicines, wait for at least five minutes between each application to ensure proper absorption and to avoid diluting the medication. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before using other prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
What precautions should be taken while using MOSI EYE OINT?
Several precautions should be followed:
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after application to prevent contamination.
- Avoid touching the tip of the ointment tube to your eye, eyelids, fingers, or any other surface to prevent contamination.
- Do not wear contact lenses during your treatment period, as bacteria can adhere to them and worsen the infection. Consult your doctor about when it is safe to resume wearing contact lenses.
- Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve quickly, to ensure the infection is fully cured and to prevent recurrence or development of drug-resistant bacteria.
- If you experience blurred vision after applying the ointment, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until your vision clears.
- Inform your doctor if you have a history of allergies to moxifloxacin or other quinolones, or if you have other eye problems like glaucoma or a history of eye surgery.
- Prolonged use of this ointment may lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
What happens if a dose of MOSI EYE OINT is missed?
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double or extra dose to make up for the missed one.
How should MOSI EYE OINT be stored?
Store MOSI EYE OINT in a closed container at room temperature, typically between 2°C and 25°C (36°F and 77°F), or below 30°C. Keep it away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze the ointment. Ensure it is kept out of the reach of children and pets.
