Frequently asked questions
1. What is Sizodon MD 1 Tablet used for?
Sizodon MD 1 Tablet is an antipsychotic medication primarily used to treat schizophrenia, a mental disorder affecting thinking, feeling, and behavior. It is also prescribed for managing acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder in adults and children above 10 years, and for behavioral problems like irritability and aggression in children aged 5 to 16 years with autism.
2. How does Sizodon MD 1 Tablet work?
Sizodon MD 1 Tablet contains Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic. It works by balancing the levels of certain chemical messengers in the brain, specifically dopamine and serotonin. By blocking their effects, it helps to improve mood, thoughts, and behavior, and can prevent symptoms from recurring.
3. What is the usual dosage of Sizodon MD 1 Tablet?
The dosage of Sizodon MD 1 Tablet varies depending on the condition being treated, age, and individual response. For adults with schizophrenia, a typical starting dose might be 2 mg per day, gradually increased as needed, usually not exceeding 16 mg per day. For bipolar disorder, adults might start with 2 to 3 mg once daily, with a maximum of 6 mg per day. In elderly patients or those with liver/kidney impairment, a lower starting dose of 0.5 mg twice daily is common. For behavioral problems in autistic children, the starting dose can be 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg daily, adjusted by a doctor. It's crucial to follow your doctor's specific instructions for dosage and administration. As it is a mouth-dissolving (MD) tablet, place it on the tongue and allow it to dissolve; do not chew or crush it.
4. What are the possible side effects of Sizodon MD 1 Tablet?
Common side effects can include sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, dry mouth, headache, insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, and weight gain. Some individuals may experience tremors, rash, or changes in sexual function. More serious but less common side effects include orthostatic hypotension (sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing), tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements), and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (a rare but severe reaction characterized by fever, muscle stiffness, and altered mental status). If side effects persist or are severe, consult your doctor.
5. Is Sizodon MD 1 Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Sizodon MD 1 Tablet (Risperidone) is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly advised by a doctor after weighing the potential benefits against risks. It may pass into breast milk, therefore, breastfeeding should be avoided while undergoing treatment with this medicine. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
6. Can Sizodon MD 1 Tablet be taken with other medications?
Sizodon MD 1 Tablet can interact with various medications. It may enhance the effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants, leading to increased dizziness and sleepiness. It can also increase the hypotensive effects of certain blood pressure medications. Interactions may occur with some antidepressants (e.g., fluoxetine, paroxetine), antiepileptic drugs (e.g., carbamazepine, phenytoin), and medications for Parkinson's disease (e.g., levodopa). Always inform your doctor about all prescription, non-prescription, herbal, and supplement medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
7. What precautions should be taken while using Sizodon MD 1 Tablet?
Avoid consuming alcohol as it can increase side effects like dizziness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery if you experience drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, liver or kidney problems, diabetes, low blood pressure, or Parkinson's disease. Rise slowly from a sitting or lying position to prevent dizziness due to a sudden drop in blood pressure. Regular monitoring of blood sugar and cholesterol levels may be advised.
8. What happens if a dose of Sizodon MD 1 Tablet is missed?
If you miss a dose of Sizodon MD 1 Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
9. How should Sizodon MD 1 Tablet be stored?
Sizodon MD 1 Tablet should be stored below 30°C. Keep it protected from light and moisture, and out of the reach and sight of children.
