ALFOO TABLET

Name:

  • Common Name: ALFOO TABLET
  • Brand Names: Alfoo 10 mg Tablet, Alfoo 10mg Tablet PR
  • Manufacturer: DR REDDY S LABORATORIES LTD

Composition: ALFOO TABLET contains Alfuzosin 10 mg as its active ingredient. It belongs to a class of medications known as alpha-blockers.

Uses: ALFOO TABLET is primarily prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in men. This condition, characterized by a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, can lead to various urinary problems. It helps alleviate symptoms such as painful urination, difficulty in passing urine, increased urinary frequency and urgency, a weak or interrupted urine stream, incomplete bladder emptying, urine leakage, and dribbling. It is also used to manage acute urinary retention.

Dosage and Administration: The typical dosage is one tablet (10 mg) once daily, preferably taken after a meal. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water and not crushed, chewed, or broken. It is important to take the medicine regularly at the same time each day, as directed by a healthcare professional.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: Dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, weakness, tiredness, dry mouth, and stuffy nose. Some may also experience a decreased sexual drive, upper respiratory tract infection, or impotence.
  • Serious Side Effects: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest pain (angina), severe allergic reactions (e.g., skin rash, swelling of face/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing), fainting, or priapism (a prolonged, painful erection).

Precautions: ALFOO TABLET is for use in men only and is not recommended for women, especially those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for children. It should not be taken if you have a known allergy to alfuzosin or other alpha-blockers, severe liver impairment, or orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure upon standing). Caution is advised in elderly patients, and those with kidney or heart problems. Alcohol consumption should be limited or avoided as it may increase dizziness or lower blood pressure. Patients should rise slowly from a sitting or lying position to prevent dizziness or weakness. Inform your doctor about all existing medical conditions and other medications being taken, particularly before any eye surgery.

Storage: Store ALFOO TABLET in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children. Maintain storage at temperatures below 25°C or 30°C.

Frequently asked questions

ALFOO TABLET contains Alfuzosin, an alpha-blocker medication used primarily to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

What is ALFOO TABLET used for?

ALFOO TABLET is used in adult men to relieve the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. These symptoms can include difficulty starting urination, a weak or interrupted urine stream, frequent urination, urgency, and the sensation of not emptying the bladder completely. It helps manage these symptoms but does not reduce the size of the prostate gland itself.

How does ALFOO TABLET work?

ALFOO TABLET belongs to a class of medicines called alpha-1-blockers. It works by relaxing the muscles in your prostate gland and the bladder neck. This relaxation helps to widen the urethra (the tube through which urine exits the body), making it easier for urine to flow and thereby reducing the symptoms of BPH.

What is the usual dosage for ALFOO TABLET?

The usual recommended dosage for ALFOO TABLET is one 10 mg extended-release tablet taken once daily. It is important to take the tablet immediately after the same meal each day to ensure proper absorption. The tablets should be swallowed whole and should not be crushed, chewed, or split.

What are the possible side effects of ALFOO TABLET?

Common side effects include dizziness, headache, tiredness, runny or stuffy nose, nausea, stomach pain, heartburn, constipation, and a decrease in sexual ability. More serious side effects can include a sudden drop in blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension) leading to dizziness or fainting, chest pain (angina), severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat), and prolonged or painful erection (priapism). If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Is ALFOO TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

ALFOO TABLET is indicated for use only in men to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is not intended for use in women, and there are no studies on its safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Can ALFOO TABLET be taken with other medications?

ALFOO TABLET can interact with several other medications. It should not be taken with other alpha-blockers (such as doxazosin, prazosin, tamsulosin) or potent CYP3A4 inhibitors (like ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir) due to an increased risk of side effects, particularly significantly low blood pressure. Caution is also advised when taken with blood pressure medications, erectile dysfunction drugs (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil), or medications that can prolong the QT interval, as these combinations can also lower blood pressure or affect heart rhythm. Always inform your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while taking ALFOO TABLET?

You may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, especially when getting up quickly from a sitting or lying position. To minimize this, get up slowly. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how this medication affects you. Inform your eye doctor if you are taking or have taken ALFOO TABLET before cataract surgery, as it can cause a complication called Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS). Your doctor will check for prostate cancer before starting this treatment, as BPH and prostate cancer can have similar symptoms. It is contraindicated in patients with moderate to severe liver impairment. Avoid alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of dizziness and low blood pressure.

What happens if a dose of ALFOO TABLET is missed?

If you miss a dose of ALFOO TABLET, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should ALFOO TABLET be stored?

ALFOO TABLET should be stored at room temperature, typically between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F), or 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F). Protect the medication from light and moisture, and always keep it out of the reach of children.
