Frequently asked questions
ESPRA DSR CAPSULE (10 CAP) by ZYDUS HEALTHCARE LIMITED is a prescription medicine used to treat various gastrointestinal conditions. It combines two active ingredients: Esomeprazole and Domperidone.
What is ESPRA DSR CAPSULE used for?
ESPRA DSR CAPSULE is primarily used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as acid reflux, when it does not respond to esomeprazole medicine alone. It helps alleviate symptoms like heartburn, stomach pain, irritation, and indigestion. It is also prescribed for stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, erosive esophagitis, nausea, and vomiting.
How does ESPRA DSR CAPSULE work?
ESPRA DSR CAPSULE works through the combined action of its two ingredients. Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the production of acid in the stomach by blocking a pump responsible for acid secretion. Domperidone is a prokinetic agent that increases the movement and contractions of the stomach and intestines, helping food move more easily through the digestive tract and preventing acid from flowing back into the food pipe.
What is the usual dosage for ESPRA DSR CAPSULE?
ESPRA DSR CAPSULE should be taken at least one hour before meals, preferably in the morning, or as directed by your doctor. The capsule should be swallowed whole with water and not chewed, crushed, or broken. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose and duration based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
What are the possible side effects of ESPRA DSR CAPSULE?
Common side effects include headache, dizziness, dry mouth, diarrhea, flatulence, stomach pain, nausea, and constipation. Most of these side effects are temporary and usually resolve over time. If any side effects persist or worsen, it is important to consult your doctor immediately. Long-term use may also lead to a decrease in blood magnesium levels, vitamin B12 deficiency, and an increased risk of bone fractures and certain bacterial infections.
Is ESPRA DSR CAPSULE safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: ESPRA DSR CAPSULE should generally be used with caution during pregnancy, and there is limited information regarding its safety in human pregnancy. It is advised to consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Breastfeeding: ESPRA DSR CAPSULE is considered unsafe during breastfeeding as it passes into breast milk in small amounts and might affect the baby. Consult your doctor, who may suggest changing the medicine, stopping breastfeeding, or closely monitoring the baby.
Can ESPRA DSR CAPSULE be taken with other medications?
ESPRA DSR CAPSULE can interact with various medications. It is crucial to inform your healthcare provider about all medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and vitamins, to avoid potential drug interactions. Specific interactions have been noted with anti-HIV medications, medicines for irregular heartbeats, mental problems, antibiotics, antifungals, blood thinners, and others.
What precautions should be taken while taking ESPRA DSR CAPSULE?
It is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption while taking ESPRA DSR CAPSULE, as it can increase acidity and drowsiness. The medicine may cause dizziness or sleepiness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you. Inform your doctor if you have underlying conditions such as liver, kidney, or heart problems, stomach bleeding, intestinal blockage, or a pituitary gland tumor. Avoid foods that may increase acidity, and do not lie down immediately after meals. ESPRA DSR CAPSULE is generally not recommended for children.
What happens if a dose of ESPRA DSR CAPSULE is missed?
If you miss a dose of ESPRA DSR CAPSULE, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
