Frequently asked questions
Ketorol Inj by DR REDDY S LABORATORIES LTD (Ketorolac Injection) is a potent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) primarily used for managing moderately severe acute pain. Below are some frequently asked questions about this medication.
What is Ketorol Inj used for?
Ketorol Inj is prescribed for the short-term relief of moderately severe acute pain. This often includes post-operative pain, musculoskeletal pain from sprains or strains, pain associated with certain types of arthritis, gout, renal colic (kidney stone pain), and severe migraine headaches. It is not intended for mild or chronic painful conditions, and its use is typically limited to a maximum of 5 days.
How does Ketorol Inj work?
Ketorolac, the active ingredient in Ketorol Inj, belongs to a class of medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by blocking the action of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, specifically COX-1 and COX-2. These enzymes are responsible for producing prostaglandins, which are substances in the body that contribute to inflammation, pain, and fever. By inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, Ketorolac helps to reduce these symptoms.
What is the usual dosage of Ketorol Inj?
Ketorol Inj is administered as an injection, either into a muscle (intramuscularly) or into a vein (intravenously), by a healthcare professional. For adults under 65 years, the typical multiple-dose regimen is 30 mg every 6 hours, with a maximum daily dose of 120 mg. For patients 65 years or older, those with kidney impairment, or those weighing less than 50 kg, the recommended dose is 15 mg every 6 hours, not exceeding 60 mg per day. The total combined duration of both injectable and any subsequent oral ketorolac treatment should not exceed 5 days.
What are the possible side effects of Ketorol Inj?
Common side effects can include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, and pain at the injection site. More serious side effects, though less common, can include gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers (symptoms like bloody or tarry stools, vomiting blood), kidney problems, liver damage, and cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke. Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing) are also possible. It's crucial to report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor.
Is Ketorol Inj safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Ketorol Inj is generally not recommended during pregnancy, particularly after 20 weeks, as it may harm the fetus and cause complications during delivery or kidney problems in the unborn baby. It is contraindicated during labor and delivery. For breastfeeding mothers, Ketorol Inj is typically contraindicated due to the potential for adverse effects on the infant and its excretion into breast milk. Alternative pain management options are usually preferred during breastfeeding.
Can Ketorol Inj be taken with other medications?
Ketorol Inj should not be taken with aspirin or other NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) due to a significantly increased risk of side effects, especially gastrointestinal issues. It can also interact with other medications, including blood thinners (anticoagulants like warfarin), diuretics, lithium, methotrexate, certain blood pressure medications, and some antidepressants, increasing the risk of adverse events. Always inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
What precautions should be taken with Ketorol Inj?
This medication is for short-term use only (maximum 5 days) and should not be used for mild or chronic pain. Inform your doctor if you have a history of asthma, bleeding disorders, heart disease (including heart attack or stroke), high blood pressure, kidney or liver disease, stomach ulcers, or if you frequently consume alcohol. Elderly patients may be more susceptible to side effects and may require a lower dose. Since Ketorol Inj can cause dizziness or drowsiness, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
What happens if a dose of Ketorol Inj is missed?
Since Ketorol Inj is administered by a healthcare professional in a hospital or clinic setting, a missed dose is unlikely. If you believe a dose was missed or if you are on a scheduled regimen and miss a dose, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Do not attempt to self-administer or take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should Ketorol Inj be stored?
As an injectable medication, Ketorol Inj is typically stored in a medical facility by healthcare professionals. It should be stored at room temperature (between 20°C and 25°C or 68°F and 77°F) and protected from light and freezing. It is important to keep it in its original packaging until use. You will not typically store this medication at home.
