Frequently asked questions
ZOCON EYE DROP (5 ML) by FDC LIMITED, containing Fluconazole (0.3% w/v), is an antifungal medication primarily used to treat fungal infections of the eye. It works by inhibiting the growth and killing the fungi responsible for these infections.
Here are some frequently asked questions about ZOCON EYE DROP:
What is ZOCON EYE DROP used for?
ZOCON EYE DROP is used to treat various fungal infections of the eye, such as fungal keratitis (infection of the cornea), filamentous mycotic keratitis, and other fungal eye infections caused by organisms like Candida. It can also be used to manage otomycosis (outer ear canal infection) and, in some cases, prevent fungal infections in high-risk individuals.
How does ZOCON EYE DROP work?
ZOCON EYE DROP contains Fluconazole, an azole antifungal. It works by interfering with the production of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. By inhibiting the enzyme (cytochrome P450-dependent 14α-demethylase) involved in ergosterol synthesis, it disrupts the fungal cell membrane, leading to the inhibition of fungal growth and ultimately killing the fungus.
What is the usual dosage for ZOCON EYE DROP?
The typical adult dosage is 1 to 2 drops instilled into the affected eye 5 times daily. In severe cases, the frequency may be increased to hourly in the initial days of therapy, then gradually decreased to 4 to 5 times a day based on the response to treatment. The therapy usually continues for 21 days or until the complete resolution of the infection, as advised by your physician. It is for external use only.
What are the possible side effects of ZOCON EYE DROP?
Common side effects include irritation, stinging or burning sensation in the eye, eye redness, itching, and temporary blurred vision immediately after application. Some individuals may also experience headache, nausea, or stomach pain/diarrhea. If these side effects persist or worsen, you should consult your doctor.
Is ZOCON EYE DROP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: ZOCON EYE DROP should be used in pregnant women only if considered clearly necessary by a doctor, as oral fluconazole has been found to be harmful to the fetus in the first trimester. Breastfeeding: It is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as fluconazole can pass into breast milk. Consult with your doctor to determine if the benefits outweigh the potential risks.
Can ZOCON EYE DROP be taken with other medications?
Specific drug interaction studies with fluconazole eye drops are limited, and interactions are considered unlikely due to low systemic absorption. However, fluconazole, particularly in oral forms, can interact with certain medications such as blood thinners, anticonvulsants, and some antiretroviral drugs. It is crucial to inform your healthcare professional about all medications you are currently taking, including other eye drops, steroids, or any history of allergic reactions to antifungal medicines.
What precautions should be taken while using ZOCON EYE DROP?
- Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the drops.
- Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
- Do not wear contact lenses during the treatment period. If you must wear them, remove them before instilling the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the preservative (benzalkonium chloride) can cause irritation and discolour soft lenses.
- Inform your doctor if you have any pre-existing liver, kidney, lung, or heart conditions.
- If your vision becomes temporarily blurred after using the drops, avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision clears.
- Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is completely cured and prevent recurrence.
- Do not use the open bottle for more than four weeks to maintain efficacy and safety.
What happens if a dose of ZOCON EYE DROP is missed?
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one, as this will not speed up recovery and may increase the risk of side effects.
How should ZOCON EYE DROP be stored?
Store ZOCON EYE DROP at room temperature, ideally below 30°C, in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the medication out of the sight and reach of children.
