Description

ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP

ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP, manufactured by Cipla Health Ltd., is an antibiotic medication primarily used in children to treat a variety of bacterial infections.

Composition

The active ingredient in ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP is Cefixime at a strength of 50 mg per 5 mL of reconstituted syrup. Cefixime is a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, thereby stopping the growth of bacteria.

Uses

ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. These include:

  • Urinary Tract Infections (e.g., cystitis, cystourethritis, uncomplicated pyelonephritis).
  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections such as ear infections (otitis media), tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and sinusitis.
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections including bronchitis and pneumonia.
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections.
  • Uncomplicated typhoid fever.
  • Uncomplicated gonococcal infections.

It is important to note that ZIPRAX is effective only against bacterial infections and should not be used for viral infections like the common cold or flu.

Dosage and Administration

The recommended dosage for the suspension is typically 8 mg/kg/day. This can be administered as a single daily dose or divided into two doses (4 mg/kg every 12 hours). The usual course of treatment is 7 days, which may be extended up to 14 days if necessary.

Preparation and Administration:

  1. To prepare the syrup, sterile water (usually provided with the pack) should be added to the dry powder.
  2. Shake the bottle well to loosen the powder, add half the quantity of sterile water, recap, and shake vigorously.
  3. Adjust the volume up to the arrow mark by adding more sterile water, if necessary, and shake again.
  4. Shake the reconstituted syrup well before each use.
  5. ZIPRAX can be taken with or without food. However, if stomach upset occurs, it is advisable to give it with meals.
  6. If a child vomits within 30 minutes of taking a dose, the same dose should be given again. Do not double the dose if it is time for the next scheduled dose.
  7. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by the doctor to ensure effective eradication of the infection and prevent antibiotic resistance.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Diarrhea, loose stools
  • Stomach pain, abdominal pain, indigestion, gas, bloating
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Rash, itching, hives
  • Itchiness of genital (or vaginal) areas

Serious side effects are rare but require immediate medical attention:

  • Signs of severe allergic reactions (e.g., severe skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing).
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising, bleeding from the nose or gums, pale skin, tiredness, chills, shortness of breath.
  • Severe uncontrollable watery diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus) and fever, which could indicate Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
  • Seizures or encephalopathy (fits, confusion, altered consciousness).

Precautions

  • Allergy: Do not use if there is a known allergy to Cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics, including penicillins.
  • Kidney Impairment: Use with caution in children with kidney problems. Dosage adjustment may be necessary.
  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Use with caution in children with a history of gastrointestinal diseases, particularly colitis, as it may worsen the condition.
  • Age Restrictions: Not recommended for children below 6 months of age. It should not be used in children above 18 years of age.
  • Antibiotic Resistance: Completing the entire course of medication is crucial to prevent the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
  • Other Conditions: Inform the doctor if the child has a history of severe skin reactions to antibiotics, encephalopathy, or haemolytic anaemia.
  • Interactions: Cefixime may cause a false-positive Coombs test result.

Storage

  • Before Reconstitution: Store the dry powder below 25°C or 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep it in its original container and out of reach of children.
  • After Reconstitution: The reconstituted suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (between 2-8°C). It must be consumed within 7 days. Any unused portion after 7 days should be discarded. Keep the bottle tightly closed and shake well before each use.
Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP 30 ML:

What is ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP used for?

ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP is an antibiotic primarily used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children. These include infections of the ear, nose, throat, lungs, skin, gastrointestinal tract, and urinary tract. It is also used to treat uncomplicated typhoid fever in children and adolescents.

How does ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP work?

ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP contains Cefixime, which is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) that is essential for the bacteria's survival. By inhibiting cell wall synthesis, it stops the infection-causing bacteria from growing and ultimately kills them.

What is the usual dosage?

The dosage and duration of ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP are determined by your doctor based on the child's age, weight, and the type and severity of the infection. The dry powder needs to be reconstituted with boiled and cooled water as per the instructions on the label. The medicine can be given with or without food, but if stomach upset occurs, it's preferable to give it with meals.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, and dizziness. Less common but more severe side effects can include severe allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/throat, difficulty breathing), unusual bleeding or bruising, or severe watery diarrhea. If any severe side effects occur, seek immediate medical attention.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP is intended for pediatric use, so precautions for pregnancy and breastfeeding are generally not relevant. However, some sources suggest it is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but it's always advisable to consult a doctor if there are any specific concerns. Cefixime may be excreted in human milk, and temporary discontinuation of nursing may be considered by a physician if essential during treatment.

Can it be taken with other medications?

ZIPRAX 50 MG DRY SYRUP can interact with certain medicines. For example, its effect may increase when taken with blood thinners like warfarin. It should be used cautiously with medicines for fits, such as Carbamazepine. Inform your doctor about all other medicines, herbal preparations, and supplements your child is taking to avoid potential interactions. Avoid using the cholera vaccine if the patient has taken Ziprax within 14 days before vaccination.

What precautions should be taken?

Inform your doctor if your child has a history of allergies, especially to Cefixime, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or penicillin. Caution is advised for children with kidney disease, as dose adjustment may be necessary. It should also be used with caution in children with severe liver disease or certain gastrointestinal conditions like colitis. Do not use this medicine for common cold and flu symptoms, as it only treats bacterial infections, not viral ones.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed one.

How should it be stored?

Before reconstitution, the dry powder should be stored below 25°C or 30°C and protected from light. After reconstitution with sterile or boiled and cooled water, the suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (between 2-8°C) and used within 7 days. Any unused portion should be discarded after this period. Keep the bottle tightly closed and shake well before each use.
