Description
KCIT SYR 200ML
KCIT SYR 200ML is an oral solution primarily used as a urinary alkalinizer. It is manufactured by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd..
Composition
Each teaspoonful (5 mL) of KCIT SYR contains:
- Potassium Citrate Monohydrate: 1100 mg
- Citric Acid Monohydrate: 334 mg
It is a sugar-free, non-alcoholic base that also contains inactive ingredients like FD&C Red No. 40, flavoring, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, purified water, sodium benzoate, and sorbitol solution. Each mL provides 2 mEq of potassium ion and is equivalent to 2 mEq of bicarbonate (HCO3).
Uses
KCIT SYR is prescribed for conditions where long-term maintenance of alkaline urine is desirable. This includes:
- Kidney stones: To treat and prevent the formation of uric acid, cystine, and calcium oxalate calculi by raising urine pH and inhibiting crystal aggregation.
- Gout therapy: As an adjuvant with uricosuric agents, as urates tend to crystallize in acidic urine.
- Renal tubular acidosis: To correct acidosis in certain renal tubular disorders.
- Metabolic acidosis: To manage high acid levels in the body, particularly those caused by kidney problems.
Dosage and Administration
The medicine should be taken diluted in water after meals to minimize gastrointestinal injury.
- Usual Adult Dose: 3 to 6 teaspoonfuls (15 to 30 mL), diluted with one glass of water, after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.
- Usual Pediatric Dose: 1 to 3 teaspoonfuls (5 to 15 mL), diluted with half a glass of water, after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.
- Shake well before use. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain/upset
Serious side effects, though rare, can occur, especially with high doses or impaired renal function, and may include hyperkalemia, characterized by listlessness, weakness, mental confusion, tingling of extremities, irregular heartbeat, muscle spasms, and seizures. Other severe effects can include severe abdominal pain, bloody/black/tarry stools, or vomit resembling coffee grounds.
Precautions
KCIT SYR should be used with caution in certain conditions and avoided in others:
- Contraindications: Severe renal impairment with oliguria or azotemia, untreated Addison's disease, acute dehydration, heat cramps, anuria, severe myocardial damage, hyperkalemia from any cause, adynamia episodica hereditaria, and severe heart problems.
- Warnings: Large doses may cause hyperkalemia and alkalosis, especially in the presence of renal disease. Concurrent administration with potassium-containing medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or cardiac glycosides may lead to toxicity.
- General Precautions: Use with caution if there is low urinary output. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have kidney or liver disease, diabetes, or heart conditions. Adequate dilution with water is crucial to minimize gastrointestinal injury.
Storage
- Keep the container tightly closed.
- Store at room temperature and away from heat, light, and moisture.
- Do not freeze.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
What is KCIT SYR 200ML used for?
KCIT SYR 200ML is primarily used as a urinary alkalinizer. It helps in the treatment and prevention of various types of kidney stones, including those made of uric acid, calcium oxalate, and cystine. Additionally, it is prescribed for conditions such as gout, metabolic acidosis (high acid levels in the body due to kidney problems), and to alleviate discomfort and burning sensation associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs).
How does KCIT SYR 200ML work?
This medicine contains Potassium Citrate and Citric Acid, which work by increasing the pH level of urine, making it less acidic (more alkaline). This alkalinizing action helps to dissolve existing kidney stones and prevent the formation and growth of new crystals, particularly uric acid and calcium oxalate stones. It also contributes to reducing irritation in the urinary tract and inhibiting bacterial growth, which can be beneficial in UTIs.
What is the usual dosage for KCIT SYR 200ML?
The typical adult dosage is generally 10-15 ml (2-3 teaspoonfuls) diluted with a glass of water, taken four times a day, usually after meals and at bedtime. For children over 6 years, 10 ml three times daily diluted with one glass of water, and for children between 1-6 years, 5 ml three times daily diluted with half a glass of water may be prescribed. It is crucial to always follow your doctor's specific instructions regarding dosage and duration.
What are the possible side effects of KCIT SYR 200ML?
Common side effects may include stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Less common but more serious side effects can be indicative of high potassium levels (hyperkalemia) and include muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, tingling of extremities, mental confusion, and in severe cases, seizures. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor immediately.
Is KCIT SYR 200ML safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
During pregnancy, there is limited information available on the use of KCIT SYR 200ML. It is generally advised to consult your doctor, and use it only if clearly needed or specifically prescribed by a healthcare professional, as some sources suggest it may cause moderate side effects. For breastfeeding mothers, KCIT SYR 200ML is generally considered safe, but it is still recommended to consult your doctor before use.
Can KCIT SYR 200ML be taken with other medications?
KCIT SYR 200ML can interact with certain other medications. It is important to avoid taking it with aluminum-containing antacids, aspirin and other salicylates, certain blood pressure medications (like ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers), eplerenone, specific heart medications (such as digoxin and quinidine), lithium, potassium supplements (including salt substitutes), and potassium-sparing diuretics. Always inform your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are currently taking to prevent potential drug interactions.
What precautions should be taken while using KCIT SYR 200ML?
It is important to dilute each dose of KCIT SYR 200ML adequately with water or juice to minimize the possibility of gastrointestinal irritation, and it is preferable to take each dose after meals. Drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day is also recommended. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially kidney or liver problems, heart disease, high potassium levels, dehydration, Addison's disease, or any known allergies to the ingredients. Regular monitoring of urine pH and blood potassium levels may be necessary during treatment. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage.
What happens if a dose of KCIT SYR 200ML is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
How should KCIT SYR 200ML be stored?
KCIT SYR 200ML should be stored in its original container, tightly closed, at room temperature (below 30°C). Keep it away from moisture, heat, and direct light, and out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use the medicine after its expiry date.
