Description

OLMESAR A TABLET

OLMESAR A TABLET by MACLEODS PHARMACEUTICALS LTD. is an antihypertensive medication prescribed for the management of high blood pressure.

Composition OLMESAR A TABLET contains a combination of two active ingredients:

  • Olmesartan Medoxomil (20 mg): An Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker (ARB) that works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, leading to the relaxation of blood vessels.
  • Amlodipine (5 mg): A Calcium Channel Blocker (CCB) that relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow by preventing calcium from entering heart and blood vessel cells.

This dual-action mechanism helps to lower blood pressure more effectively than either medication alone.

Uses OLMESAR A TABLET is primarily used to treat:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

By controlling blood pressure, it helps to reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems.

Dosage and Administration

  • Take OLMESAR A TABLET as directed by your physician, usually once daily.
  • It can be taken with or without food.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not chew, crush, or break it.
  • For optimal blood pressure control, it is recommended to take the medicine at the same time each day.
  • Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Side Effects Common side effects may include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Ankle swelling
  • Nausea
  • Low blood pressure

Serious side effects, though less common, can include skin rash, painful joints, fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, muscle weakness, and symptoms of high potassium levels (e.g., nausea, diarrhea, muscle weakness, change in heart rhythm). If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not take if you are allergic to Olmesartan, Amlodipine, or any other ingredients in the tablet.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: OLMESAR A TABLET is contraindicated during pregnancy and generally not recommended for breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart conditions (e.g., low blood pressure, heart attack, aortic stenosis, cardiogenic shock), or diabetes.
  • Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol as it may enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect and increase dizziness.
  • Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are taking, especially painkillers, cholesterol-reducing medicines, blood thinners, water pills, lithium, potassium supplements, and aliskiren (especially if you have diabetes or kidney impairment).
  • Driving: This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Discontinuation: Do not stop taking OLMESAR A TABLET abruptly without consulting your doctor, as it can lead to a rise in blood pressure and increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
  • Children: Not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

Storage Store OLMESAR A TABLET in a cool and dry place, away from light and moisture, typically below 25°C or 30°C. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about Olmesar A Tablet:

What is Olmesar A Tablet used for?

Olmesar A Tablet is primarily used to treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. By effectively lowering blood pressure, it helps to reduce the risk of serious heart-related complications such as heart attack and stroke, and can also help prevent kidney damage caused by hypertension.

How does Olmesar A Tablet work?

Olmesar A Tablet contains two active ingredients: Olmesartan and Amlodipine. Olmesartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) that works by blocking the hormone angiotensin, which relaxes and widens blood vessels. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that also relaxes blood vessels and reduces the heart's workload. Together, these actions promote smoother blood flow and make it easier for the heart to pump blood throughout the body, thereby lowering high blood pressure.

What is the usual dosage of Olmesar A Tablet?

Olmesar A Tablet is typically taken once a day, with or without food, at a fixed time each day for best results. Your doctor will determine the specific dose based on your medical condition and how you respond to the treatment. It's crucial not to chew, bite, or break the tablet.

What are the possible side effects of Olmesar A Tablet?

Common side effects of Olmesar A Tablet can include headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and swelling in the ankles or feet. Most of these side effects are usually temporary and resolve over time. More serious side effects, though rare, can include symptoms of high potassium levels (like muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat), severe dizziness, or a rapid heartbeat. If side effects persist or worsen, or if you experience any serious symptoms, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Is Olmesar A Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Olmesar A Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, as there is definite evidence of risk to the developing baby, including potential long-term damage to the baby's kidneys and lungs. If you are pregnant or planning to conceive, you should consult your doctor immediately to discuss safer alternative medications. The effect of Olmesar A Tablet on breastfeeding infants is not fully known, and it can pass into breast milk. Therefore, it is generally advised to consult your doctor before using this medicine while breastfeeding, particularly if the baby was born prematurely.

Can Olmesar A Tablet be taken with other medications?

Olmesar A Tablet can interact with certain other medications. It is important to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal remedies you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions. Specific interactions to be aware of include other blood pressure-lowering medicines (especially ACE inhibitors like enalapril or ramipril, and aliskiren, particularly in diabetic patients), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, lithium, and potassium supplements or potassium-rich foods, as it may increase potassium levels in the blood. You should also avoid grapefruit juice and St. John's wort while taking this medicine.

What precautions should be taken while on Olmesar A Tablet?

It is important to inform your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease, heart problems, or diabetes. Avoid consuming alcohol, as it may enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect and increase dizziness. Dizziness can be a side effect, so rise slowly from a sitting or lying position to prevent lightheadedness, and avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medicine affects you. Do not stop taking Olmesar A Tablet suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can lead to a rise in blood pressure and increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

What happens if a dose of Olmesar A Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of Olmesar A Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should Olmesar A Tablet be stored?

Olmesar A Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, below 25°C or 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
