Description
ZENFLOX PLUS TABLET
Zenflox Plus Tablet is a combination antibiotic medication manufactured by Mankind Pharma Ltd. It is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections.
Composition Each tablet contains two active ingredients:
- Cefixime (200 mg)
- Ofloxacin (200 mg)
Cefixime belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics, while Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. They work synergistically to prevent bacterial cell wall formation and inhibit bacterial DNA replication, leading to bacterial death.
Uses Zenflox Plus Tablet is prescribed for treating various bacterial infections, including:
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
- Typhoid Fever
- Respiratory Tract Infections (e.g., bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis)
- Gastrointestinal Infections (e.g., bacterial gastroenteritis, traveler's diarrhea, dysentery)
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) like chlamydia and gonorrhea
It is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
Dosage and Administration The recommended dose is typically once daily with food, or as directed by a physician. It is crucial to complete the entire course of treatment as prescribed by the doctor, even if symptoms improve, to prevent antibiotic resistance and recurrence of infection. Do not take more than the recommended dose.
Side Effects Common side effects may include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Headache
- Dizziness
Serious side effects, though less common, can include tendonitis and tendon rupture, kidney damage, severe gastrointestinal infections, and allergic reactions. Consult a doctor if any side effects persist or worsen.
Precautions
- Allergy: Avoid if hypersensitive to cefixime, ofloxacin, or other macrolide antibiotics.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use with caution and only if clearly suggested by a doctor after weighing benefits against risks.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase the risk of side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, and liver damage.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all current medications, especially blood thinners, antacids, iron or zinc preparations, medicines for heart problems, mental health problems, fits, diabetes, asthma, and HIV infection. Antacids should be taken at least 2 hours apart from Zenflox Plus.
- Medical Conditions: Exercise caution in patients with a history of kidney disease, liver disease, colitis, diabetes, central nervous system disorders (including epilepsy or seizure disorders), myasthenia gravis, or QT prolongation.
- Photosensitivity: Ofloxacin can increase sensitivity to sunlight. Limit sun exposure and wear protective clothing.
- Driving/Operating Machines: May cause dizziness or affect vision, so avoid activities requiring concentration if affected.
Storage Store Zenflox Plus Tablet below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Frequently asked questions
ZENFLOX PLUS TAB is a combination antibiotic containing Cefixime and Ofloxacin, used to treat various bacterial infections.
What is ZENFLOX PLUS TAB used for?
ZENFLOX PLUS TAB is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. These include typhoid fever, urinary tract infections (UTIs), respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis), middle ear infections (otitis media), reproductive organ infections (like gonorrhea), gastrointestinal infections (such as bacterial gastroenteritis, traveler's diarrhea, dysentery), and skin and soft tissue infections.
How does ZENFLOX PLUS TAB work?
ZENFLOX PLUS TAB contains two active ingredients: Cefixime and Ofloxacin. Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic that works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective cell wall, which is essential for bacterial survival. Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase, an enzyme crucial for DNA replication, repair, and reproduction. Together, they effectively kill bacteria and prevent the spread of infection.
What is the usual dosage for ZENFLOX PLUS TAB?
The typical adult dosage for ZENFLOX PLUS TAB is one tablet (Cefixime 200 mg + Ofloxacin 200 mg) taken twice daily, or as directed by your doctor. It should be swallowed whole with water, preferably at a fixed time each day. It can be taken with or without food, though taking it with food may help reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Always complete the full course as prescribed by your doctor.
What are the possible side effects of ZENFLOX PLUS TAB?
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, and flatulence. More serious but less common side effects can include severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing), signs of liver disease (yellow skin/eyes, dark urine), severe watery diarrhea (pseudomembranous colitis), inflammation of the bowel, tendonitis, and tendon rupture. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, consult your doctor immediately.
Is ZENFLOX PLUS TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
ZENFLOX PLUS TAB is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It should only be used if absolutely necessary and explicitly advised by your doctor after carefully assessing the potential benefits and risks to both the mother and the infant.
Can ZENFLOX PLUS TAB be taken with other medications?
ZENFLOX PLUS TAB can interact with several medications. Inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal preparations you are taking. Significant interactions include:

- Blood thinners (anticoagulants): ZENFLOX PLUS TAB may increase the effect of blood thinners.
- Methotrexate: Used in cancer management.
- Theophylline: Used for breathing problems like asthma, as the risk of fits may increase.
- Medicines affecting heart rhythms: Such as quinidine, hydroquinidine, disopyramide, certain antidepressants (clomipramine, amitriptyline), and some other antibiotics (erythromycin, clarithromycin, azithromycin).
- Diuretics (water pills) and probenecid (for gout).
- Didanosine: Used in HIV management.
- Vaccines: May interfere with the effectiveness of typhoid, cholera, and BCG vaccines.
What precautions should be taken while using ZENFLOX PLUS TAB?
- Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol as it may increase the risk of side effects like dizziness and liver damage.
- Sun exposure: Ofloxacin can increase sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity). Limit sun exposure and use protective clothing.
- Medical conditions: Use with caution if you have liver or kidney disease, diabetes, central nervous system disorders (including epilepsy or a history of fits), a history of tendon disorder, myasthenia gravis, or a family history of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions.
- Driving/Operating machinery: This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience these effects.
- Complete the course: Do not stop taking the medicine even if you feel better, as this can lead to the infection returning or developing antibiotic resistance.
What happens if a dose of ZENFLOX PLUS TAB is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
How should ZENFLOX PLUS TAB be stored?
Store ZENFLOX PLUS TAB below 25°C or 30°C in a cool and dry place. Protect it from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep the medicine out of the reach of children and pets.
