Description
LOTEL LS GEL 5ML
LOTEL LS GEL 5ML is an ophthalmic medication manufactured by Ajanta Pharma Limited.
Composition
LOTEL LS GEL 5ML contains Loteprednol etabonate (0.3% w/v) as its active ingredient. Loteprednol etabonate is a corticosteroid that works by blocking the release of substances in the body, such as prostaglandins, that cause inflammation, thereby reducing swelling, redness, and irritation in the eyes.
Uses
LOTEL LS GEL 5ML is primarily prescribed for the treatment of:
- Post-operative inflammation and pain following ocular surgery.
- Redness and swelling in the eyes caused by infection or allergy, alleviating symptoms like pain, itching, and watery eyes.
- Other eye conditions such as allergic conjunctivitis, iritis, eye disorders, swollen eyes, burning eyes, and uveitis.
Dosage and Administration
LOTEL LS GEL 5ML is for ophthalmic use only. The typical dosage is one or two drops in the affected eye(s) two to four times a day, or as prescribed by a doctor, based on the severity of the condition.
- Wash hands thoroughly before use.
- Tilt the head back and gently pull the lower eyelid to form a pocket.
- Gently squeeze a tiny amount of the gel into the lower eyelid.
- Avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye or any surface to prevent contamination.
- If wearing contact lenses, remove them before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
- Do not discontinue use suddenly without consulting a doctor.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Temporary blurred vision.
- Eye irritation, discomfort, or burning sensation.
- Watery eyes.
- Feeling of a foreign object in the eye.
- Eye itching.
More serious effects, particularly with long-term use, can include increased risk of eye infections, delayed healing, and elevated eye pressure potentially leading to glaucoma or cataracts.
Precautions
- Glaucoma and Eye Infections: Individuals with a history of glaucoma, herpes simplex infection, or other eye conditions should use this medication only under medical guidance, as it can increase the risk of eye infections and potentially lead to increased eye pressure.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Lotel LS Gel may be unsafe during pregnancy and should be used with caution, only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It is generally considered safe during breastfeeding when prescribed by an expert, but consultation with a doctor is advised.
- Contact Lenses: Remove contact lenses before application and wait 15 minutes before reinserting.
- Driving: Lotel LS Gel may cause temporary blurred vision; therefore, avoid driving or operating machinery until vision is clear.
- Overuse: Do not use Lotel LS Gel for longer than the prescribed duration or in higher doses, as this may worsen symptoms or lead to complications.
Storage
Store LOTEL LS GEL 5ML in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and the reach of children. Do not use the medicine past its expiry date.
Frequently asked questions
LOTEL LS GEL 5ML contains Loteprednol Etabonate, a corticosteroid used to treat inflammation and pain in the eye. It is commonly prescribed following ocular surgery and for various inflammatory and allergic eye conditions.
What is LOTEL LS GEL 5ML used for?
LOTEL LS GEL 5ML is primarily used to treat post-operative inflammation and pain following eye surgery. It can also be prescribed for other inflammatory eye conditions such as allergic conjunctivitis, uveitis, iritis, and certain types of conjunctivitis where inflammation is present.
How does LOTEL LS GEL 5ML work?
The active ingredient, Loteprednol Etabonate, is a corticosteroid that works by inhibiting the body's inflammatory response. It does this by blocking the release of substances, particularly prostaglandins, that cause inflammation, swelling, redness, and pain in the eyes. Loteprednol Etabonate is designed to be metabolized quickly into inactive substances, which helps to reduce the risk of systemic side effects.
What is the usual dosage of LOTEL LS GEL 5ML?
For post-operative inflammation and pain following ocular surgery, the typical dosage is one to two drops applied into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye four times daily. Treatment usually begins the day after surgery and continues for the first two weeks of the post-operative period. Specific dosage may vary based on the condition being treated and your doctor's instructions.
What are the possible side effects of LOTEL LS GEL 5ML?
Common side effects include temporary blurred vision, eye discomfort, a feeling of something in the eye, irritation, itching, watery eyes, and a burning sensation upon instillation. More serious, though less common, side effects can include elevated intraocular pressure (which may lead to glaucoma), cataract formation, delayed wound healing, and an increased risk of secondary eye infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal).
Is LOTEL LS GEL 5ML safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of Loteprednol Etabonate in pregnant women. Animal studies have shown embryotoxic and teratogenic effects at doses higher than the typical clinical use. Therefore, LOTEL LS GEL 5ML should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
It is unknown whether topical ophthalmic administration of Loteprednol Etabonate results in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in human milk. Systemic steroids can appear in human milk and may suppress growth or cause other adverse effects in a nursing infant. Caution should be exercised when LOTEL LS GEL 5ML is administered to a nursing woman.
Can LOTEL LS GEL 5ML be taken with other medications?
Following ocular administration, Loteprednol Etabonate is very slowly absorbed into the blood, making interactions with orally taken drugs unlikely. However, if you are using other eye medications, it is generally advised to wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications to prevent dilution. It is important to inform your doctor about all medications, vitamins, and herbal products you are taking. Prolonged use of corticosteroids may increase the risk of glaucoma, so caution is advised in the presence of glaucoma.
What precautions should be taken when using LOTEL LS GEL 5ML?
Do not allow the dropper tip to touch any surface, including your eye, to avoid contamination. Do not wear contact lenses while using this medication; remove them before application and wait at least 10-15 minutes before reinserting. Prolonged use of corticosteroids can lead to increased intraocular pressure and cataract formation, so regular eye check-ups are important, especially if used for 10 days or longer. This medication is contraindicated in most viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, including herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, varicella, and also in mycobacterial and fungal infections of the eye.
What happens if a dose of LOTEL LS GEL 5ML is missed?
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use extra medicine or a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should LOTEL LS GEL 5ML be stored?
Store LOTEL LS GEL 5ML upright in a closed container at room temperature, typically between 15ºC to 25ºC (59ºF to 77ºF), away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it out of the reach of children and do not use the medicine beyond the expiration date marked on the carton or container. Before instilling drops, invert the closed bottle and shake once to fill the tip.
