Description
ASOMEX LT TABLET
Name: Asomex LT Tablet (Brand Name)
Composition: ASOMEX LT TABLET contains a combination of two active ingredients:
- S(-)Amlodipine (typically 2.5 mg)
- Losartan (typically 50 mg)
S(-)Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker (CCB) that works by relaxing and widening blood vessels. Losartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) that also relaxes blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more smoothly. This combination provides a synergistic effect in controlling blood pressure.
Uses: ASOMEX LT TABLET is primarily prescribed for the following conditions:
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): It is used to manage high blood pressure, especially when treatment with a single agent is not effective.
- Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: It helps in reducing the risk of heart attack, heart failure, or stroke.
- Kidney Protection: It can protect kidney function in patients with type 2 diabetes who also have nephropathy (kidney disease).
Dosage and Administration:
- ASOMEX LT TABLET should be taken as directed by your physician.
- Typically, the starting and maintenance dose is one tablet once daily.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew it.
- It can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day for optimal results.
- The maximal antihypertensive effect is usually attained 3-6 weeks after initiation of therapy.
- Do not stop taking the medicine without consulting your doctor, as hypertension is a chronic condition often requiring long-term management.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Low blood pressure, dizziness, tiredness, headache, sleepiness, swollen ankles (edema), flushing (warmth and redness of face and neck), nausea, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, muscle cramps, vision problems, cough, sinus infections, and nasal congestion.
- Serious Side Effects (Consult your doctor immediately if you experience): Symptoms of high potassium levels in the blood (e.g., problems with heart rhythms, slow heart rate, muscle weakness), allergic reactions (swelling of the tongue, throat, lips, or face), or worsening kidney problems (swelling in ankles, feet, hands, or sudden weight gain).
Precautions:
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: ASOMEX LT TABLET is generally not recommended during pregnancy as it may cause serious harm to the growing baby. It is also generally not recommended for use during breastfeeding. Inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant.
- Liver and Kidney Problems: Use with caution in patients with heart, liver, or kidney problems. Severe liver disease is a contraindication.
- Diabetes: It may alter blood sugar levels, so close monitoring is necessary for diabetic patients.
- Dehydration: Inform your doctor if you are severely dehydrated due to excessive vomiting or diarrhea.
- Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol as it may enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect and increase the risk of dizziness and low blood pressure.
- Potassium Supplements: Avoid taking potassium supplements as it may lead to high potassium levels in the blood.
- Driving: This medicine may cause dizziness or sleepiness, especially at the start of treatment or when the dose is increased. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
- Regular monitoring of kidney function, blood pressure, electrolyte, and blood sugar levels is recommended during treatment.
Storage:
- Store ASOMEX LT TABLET in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat.
- Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
- Typically, store below 25°C or at room temperature (20-25°C) and below 30°C.
Frequently asked questions
What is Asomex LT Tablet used for?
Asomex LT Tablet is a combination medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It is prescribed when managing blood pressure with single agents is not effective. This medicine also helps in reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and can protect kidney function, especially in patients with both hypertension and type 2 diabetes.
How does Asomex LT Tablet work?
Asomex LT Tablet contains two active ingredients: S(-)Amlodipine and Losartan. S(-)Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes the arterial walls by preventing calcium from entering the smooth muscle cells of the heart and blood vessels, thereby decreasing peripheral vascular resistance and reducing blood pressure. Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a chemical that causes blood vessels to narrow. By blocking these receptors, losartan allows blood vessels to relax and widen, improving blood flow and reducing strain on the heart.
What is the usual dosage of Asomex LT Tablet?
The typical starting and maintenance dose of Asomex LT Tablet for most patients is one tablet once daily. The maximal antihypertensive effect is usually achieved three to six weeks after starting therapy. Your doctor will determine the correct dose and duration of treatment based on your age, body weight, and health condition. It can be taken with or without food.
What are the possible side effects of Asomex LT Tablet?
Common side effects of Asomex LT Tablet may include low blood pressure, dizziness, tiredness, headache, sleepiness, swollen ankles (edema), flushing (sense of warmth in the face, ears, neck, and trunk), palpitations, nausea, abdominal pain, visual disturbance, breathlessness, change in bowel habits, nasal congestion, and upper respiratory tract infection. It may also lead to increased potassium levels in the blood.
Is Asomex LT Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Asomex LT Tablet is not recommended for use during pregnancy as it may cause serious harm to the developing fetus. If you become pregnant while taking this medicine, you should stop taking it and consult your doctor immediately. It is also not recommended for use during breastfeeding due to a lack of safety information and potential harm to nursing infants.
Can Asomex LT Tablet be taken with other medications?
Asomex LT Tablet can interact with various medications. Concomitant use with potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, amiloride, triamterene) can increase the risk of high potassium levels in the blood. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen may reduce its blood pressure-lowering effect and potentially worsen kidney function. The concomitant use of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and ACE inhibitors has not been adequately studied, and such combinations can increase the risk of high potassium and kidney problems. Inform your doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal products and supplements, to avoid potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken while using Asomex LT Tablet?
Before taking Asomex LT Tablet, inform your doctor if you have any heart, liver, or kidney problems, diabetes, low blood pressure, or severe dehydration. Patients with impaired hepatic function should use this medicine with caution, possibly at a lower dose. Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as it may severely decrease your blood pressure. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase the risk of low blood pressure and dizziness. Regular monitoring of kidney function, blood pressure, electrolyte levels, and blood sugar levels may be necessary during treatment. Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can lead to serious complications.
What happens if a dose of Asomex LT Tablet is missed?
If you miss a dose of Asomex LT Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
How should Asomex LT Tablet be stored?
Asomex LT Tablet should be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Store it according to the instructions provided on the pack or label.
