SORVATE OINT

Name: Sorvate Ointment (Brand Name: SORVATE OINT by GLENMARK PHARMACEUTICALS LTD)

Composition:

  • Active Ingredients: Calcitriol (0.0003% w/w or 3mcg/1gm)

Uses: Sorvate Ointment is prescribed for the topical treatment of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis in adults and children two years of age and older. Plaque psoriasis is a common form of psoriasis characterized by dry, itchy, raised skin patches (plaques) covered with scales. It works by lowering the activity of immune cells in the skin and helps to inhibit the formation of excess skin cells that can stack up and create scales.

Dosage and Administration: Sorvate Ointment is for external use only. It should be applied as advised by a healthcare provider, typically once or twice a day.

  • Clean and dry the affected area before applying a thin layer of the ointment.
  • Gently rub it in until it is absorbed.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after application to avoid spreading the medication to sensitive areas.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed amount.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, broken, or irritated skin.
  • Do not cover the treated area with dressings or bandages unless specifically instructed by a doctor, as this may increase absorption and potential side effects.

Side Effects: Common side effects are usually mild and may resolve over time. These include:

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Stinging sensation
  • Dryness
  • Rash
  • Discomfort at the application site

Precautions:

  • Do not use Sorvate Ointment if you are allergic to calcitriol or any of its components.
  • Inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have liver or kidney diseases, hypercalcaemia (high calcium levels in the blood), or hypervitaminosis D (excess Vitamin D levels in the blood).
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use this ointment only after consulting their doctor.
  • Not recommended for children less than 2 years of age.
  • Use with caution in individuals receiving drugs known to raise serum calcium levels, such as thiazide diuretics, calcium supplements, or high doses of vitamin D.
  • Avoid excessive exposure of the treated areas to sunlight.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. The medicine should be kept below 25°C or 30°C. Keep out of reach and sight of children.

Frequently asked questions

Sorvate Ointment by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd. typically contains two active ingredients: Clobetasol Propionate and Calcitriol. This combination is primarily used to treat psoriasis.

Here are some frequently asked questions about Sorvate Ointment:

What is Sorvate Ointment used for?

Sorvate Ointment is used for the topical treatment of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis in adults and children two years of age and older. It helps relieve symptoms such as redness, itching, swelling, and the excessive production of skin cells that lead to scales.

How does Sorvate Ointment work?

Sorvate Ointment works through its two active ingredients. Clobetasol propionate is a super-high potency corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, redness, and itching by suppressing the release of inflammatory mediators and calming the immune system. Calcitriol (a form of Vitamin D) helps to minimize the excessive production of skin cells that build up and form scales, thereby normalizing cell turnover.

What is the usual dosage for Sorvate Ointment?

A thin layer of Sorvate Ointment is typically applied to the affected skin areas once or twice daily and gently rubbed in. Treatment is usually limited to 2 consecutive weeks, and the total amount used should not exceed 50 grams per week due to the potent corticosteroid component. For moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, some formulations of clobetasol propionate cream may be used for up to 4 weeks, but the total dosage should still not exceed 50 grams per week.

What are the possible side effects of Sorvate Ointment?

Common side effects include burning, itching, stinging, dryness, redness, or irritation at the application site. More serious side effects, especially with prolonged or excessive use, can include thinning of the skin, stretch marks, acne, small red bumps around hair follicles (folliculitis), changes in skin color, and unexpected hair growth. Systemic absorption of the clobetasol component can lead to adrenal gland problems (HPA axis suppression), high blood sugar, or vision problems. The calcitriol component may, in some cases, increase blood calcium levels.

Is Sorvate Ointment safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Sorvate Ointment should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, and you should discuss this with your doctor. While very little clobetasol applied topically gets into the blood, it's not definitively known if it's safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Similarly, the safety of calcitriol in topical ointments during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well-established. If you are breastfeeding and using clobetasol, apply it to the smallest area possible for the shortest time, and avoid applying it to the nipples or areas where the baby might come into direct contact. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Can Sorvate Ointment be taken with other medications?

Topical Clobetasol generally has no known severe or serious interactions with other drugs when used as directed. However, using it with CYP3A4 inhibitors (like certain antifungal or HIV medications) may increase systemic corticosteroid levels. For the calcitriol component, caution is advised if you have high calcium levels in your blood, or if you are taking calcium supplements, high doses of vitamin D, or any other medications that may increase blood calcium levels. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, and dietary supplements you are using.

What precautions should be taken when using Sorvate Ointment?

Sorvate Ointment is for external use only and should not be taken by mouth. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, and healthy skin. Do not use it on the face, groin, or underarms unless specifically directed by your doctor. Do not bandage or cover the treated skin with occlusive dressings unless instructed by your healthcare provider, as this can increase absorption and the risk of side effects. Sorvate Ointment is not recommended for use in pediatric patients under 12 years of age due to increased risk of side effects, especially HPA axis suppression. For the calcitriol component, it is not recommended for children below two years of age. Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve within 2 weeks or if they worsen.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of Sorvate Ointment, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double or extra dose to make up for a missed one.

How should Sorvate Ointment be stored?

Store Sorvate Ointment at room temperature, typically between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). It should not be refrigerated. Keep the ointment out of the reach of children and pets. Discard any unused medication after the expiration date.
