Description

SCABEX S CREAM by INDOCO REMEDIES LIMITED

SCABEX S Cream is a topical medication manufactured by Indoco Remedies Limited, primarily used for the treatment of parasitic skin infestations.

Composition

SCABEX S Cream contains two active ingredients:

  • Lindane (Gamma Benzene Hexachloride): 1% w/w - An anti-parasitic agent that disrupts the nervous system of mites and lice, effectively killing them and their eggs.
  • Cetrimide: 0.1% w/w - An antiseptic and disinfectant that works by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. It also contains methyl paraben and propyl paraben as preservatives.

Uses

SCABEX S Cream is prescribed for:

  • Scabies: A contagious, intensely itchy skin condition caused by a tiny burrowing mite (Sarcoptes scabiei). The cream works by eliminating these mites and their eggs. It is particularly indicated for patients who cannot tolerate other treatments or have failed other approved medicines.
  • Lice Infestations (Pediculosis): Effective in managing lice on the body and scalp, including head lice, by paralyzing and killing them and their eggs.
  • Minor Skin Injuries: Due to Cetrimide's antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, it can also be used to manage minor skin injuries such as cuts, grazes, minor burns, and nappy rash, helping to prevent secondary infections.

Dosage and Administration

  • SCABEX S Cream is for external use only.
  • Use as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Apply a thin layer to the affected areas.
  • For scabies treatment, typically apply to the entire body from the neck down. For infants under 2 years, include the face, neck, ears, and scalp, avoiding the immediate eye and mouth areas.
  • Leave the cream on for 8 to 14 hours (or 8 to 12 hours) before washing it off thoroughly with warm water.
  • Wash hands before and after application, unless the hands are the area being treated.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, or ears. In case of accidental contact, rinse immediately with clean water.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of use.
  • After the first application, machine-wash clothes, towels, and bed linen with hot water to help kill mites.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Application site reactions such as burning, irritation, itching, and redness.
  • Dry skin.
  • Less common side effects can include tingling, numbness of the skin, hair loss, rashes, drowsiness, and headache. Most side effects are temporary and typically resolve as the body adjusts to the medicine. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not use if allergic to Cetrimide, Gamma Benzene Hexachloride, or any other component of the cream.
  • External Use Only: Avoid application to body cavities like the mouth or ear, broken skin, or as an enema.
  • Seizure Disorders: Not recommended for individuals with known uncontrolled seizure/fits disorder. Use with caution in neurotoxicity.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If use is unavoidable during breastfeeding, avoid applying to the breast and other areas that may contact the infant; pump and discard breast milk for at least 24 hours post-application.
  • Infants, Children, Elderly: Use with particular caution in infants, children, the elderly, individuals with other skin conditions (like atopic dermatitis or psoriasis), or those weighing less than 50 kg. The safety and efficacy in children have not been well-established; consult a doctor.
  • Re-treatment: Inform your doctor before treating a second scabies attack that occurs soon after the first, as using it more than once may increase the risk of serious side effects, including seizures.
  • Interactions: Withhold corticosteroid treatment if addressing eczematous reactions, as it may exacerbate scabies.
  • Driving: May affect driving ability; avoid driving if experiencing symptoms that impair safe driving.

Storage

  • Store below 25°C or 30°C in a cool, dry place.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight.
  • Do not freeze.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
Frequently asked questions

SCABEX S CREAM is a medicine manufactured by INDOCO REMEDIES LIMITED, primarily used for the treatment of scabies and lice infestations. It contains a combination of active ingredients that work to eliminate the parasites causing these skin conditions.

What is SCABEX S CREAM used for?

SCABEX S CREAM is primarily used to treat scabies, a skin condition caused by an infestation of tiny mites called Sarcoptes scabiei. It is also effective in eliminating head lice and their eggs (pediculosis). Some sources indicate it can additionally be used for minor skin injuries like cuts, grazes, and minor burns, and nappy rash, due to its antiseptic properties.

How does SCABEX S CREAM work?

SCABEX S CREAM contains two active substances: Cetrimide and Gamma Benzene Hexachloride (also known as Lindane). Cetrimide acts as an antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal agent, killing or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms by damaging their cell membranes. Gamma Benzene Hexachloride is an anti-parasitic insecticide that is absorbed by the mites and lice and their eggs, disrupting their nervous system, leading to their paralysis and death.

What is the usual dosage for SCABEX S CREAM?

SCABEX S CREAM is for external use only and should be used exactly as directed by your doctor. Generally, a thin layer of the cream is applied to the affected areas of the skin. For adults and children over two years, it's typically applied to the entire body from the neck down. For babies under two years, it may also be applied to the face, neck, ears, and scalp, avoiding the areas immediately around the eyes and mouth. The cream is usually left on for 8-14 hours (some sources suggest 8-12 hours) before being thoroughly washed off with warm water. Do not apply more medicine or apply it more often than recommended by your doctor.

What are the possible side effects of SCABEX S CREAM?

Common side effects include reactions at the application site such as burning, irritation, itching, and redness, as well as dry skin. Other reported side effects may include hair loss, rashes, drowsiness, headache, tingling, numbness, and dizziness. Most of these side effects are usually temporary and tend to disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. If any side effects persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Is SCABEX S CREAM safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During Pregnancy: Limited information is available regarding the use of SCABEX S CREAM during pregnancy. It should only be used if specifically recommended by your doctor and if clearly necessary, after a careful assessment of the benefits and risks.

During Breastfeeding: SCABEX S CREAM is known to pass into human breast milk. It is generally not recommended for use by breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary. If its use is unavoidable, avoid applying it to the breast and other large areas of the skin that could come into contact with the infant. One recommendation suggests pumping and discarding breast milk for at least 24 hours after using the medicine. Always consult your doctor before using this medicine while breastfeeding.

Can SCABEX S CREAM be taken with other medications?

Since SCABEX S CREAM is applied externally, it is less likely to interact with other medications. However, it is always important to inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Particular care should be taken if you are using medications such as antipsychotics, antidepressants, theophylline, cyclosporine, mycophenolate mofetil, tacrolimus, certain antibiotics (penicillins, imipenem, quinolone), chloroquine, pyrimethamine, isoniazid, meperidine, methocarbamol, or centrally active anticholinesterases. The use of radiographic contrast agents with SCABEX S CREAM may increase the risk of seizures. Applying corticosteroids for eczematous reactions should be withheld prior to SCABEX S CREAM treatment, as it might worsen the scabies infestation.

What precautions should be taken while using SCABEX S CREAM?

  • This cream is for external use only.
  • Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, mouth, ears, or any open wounds or broken skin. If accidental contact occurs, rinse the area immediately with clean water.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the cream, unless your hands are the area being treated.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose or duration of treatment.
  • It is not recommended for premature infants or young babies, and caution is advised in children, the elderly, and individuals weighing less than 50 kg.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have a known allergy to cetrimide, gamma benzene hexachloride, or any other ingredients, or if you have certain skin conditions like crusted (Norwegian) scabies, atopic dermatitis, or psoriasis, or an uncontrolled seizure disorder.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of fits, HIV or AIDS, a head injury, a brain or spinal cord tumor, cirrhosis of the liver, or are a heavy alcohol drinker.
  • Do not use SCABEX S CREAM to treat a second scabies attack that occurs soon after the first, as repeated use can potentially lead to serious side effects including seizures and death.

What happens if a dose of SCABEX S CREAM is missed?

If you miss an application of SCABEX S CREAM, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled application, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply extra cream or double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should SCABEX S CREAM be stored?

Store SCABEX S CREAM in a cool, dry place, typically below 25°C or 30°C, and away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not freeze the cream. Ensure the medicine is not used if it has expired or if the packaging is damaged.
