Description

ACIVIR 800 DT (10 TABLET) by CIPLA HEALTH LTD

ACIVIR 800 DT is an antiviral medication used to treat various viral infections.

Name

  • Common Name: Aciclovir
  • Brand Name: ACIVIR 800 DT

Composition Each dispersible tablet contains Aciclovir, BP 800 mg.

Uses ACIVIR 800 DT is prescribed for the treatment of viral infections caused by the herpes virus family. These include:

  • Herpes simplex virus infections, such as cold sores (herpes labialis) and genital herpes.
  • Herpes zoster (shingles).
  • Varicella (chickenpox). It also helps prevent the recurrence of these infections and manages them in immunocompromised patients.

Dosage and Administration ACIVIR 800 DT is a dispersible tablet that should be dissolved in a glass of water before consumption. It can be taken with or without food, ideally at a consistent time each day.

  • For herpes zoster infections and chickenpox in adults, the typical dosage is 800 mg five times daily at approximately 4-hourly intervals, omitting the night-time dose, for 7 days.
  • For immunocompromised patients, 800 mg should be taken four times daily at approximately 6-hourly intervals. Treatment should be initiated as early as possible after the onset of an infection for better results.

Side Effects Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fatigue, rash, and skin sensitivity to sunlight. Serious, though rare, side effects can include hives, blistering or peeling rash, yellow skin or eyes, unusual bruising or bleeding, loss of consciousness, seizures, difficulty breathing, hallucinations, and swelling of the face, tongue, lips, or throat.

Precautions

  • Kidney and Liver Conditions: Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver disease.
  • Elderly Patients: Elderly patients (over 65 years) may experience more side effects; kidney function should be monitored, and a lower dose might be necessary.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding, as definite evidence of risk to the developing baby exists, and it may pass into breast milk.
  • Hydration: Maintain adequate hydration during treatment to prevent dehydration and potential kidney damage.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications, including probenecid, cimetidine, drugs affecting the immune system, and other antivirals, to avoid potential interactions.
  • Driving/Operating Machinery: This medicine may cause drowsiness or dizziness, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.

Storage Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of the sight and reach of children. It is typically stored at temperatures between 10ºC and 25ºC or below 30ºC.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are frequently asked questions about ACIVIR 800 DT (10 TABLET) by CIPLA HEALTH LTD:

What is ACIVIR 800 DT used for?

ACIVIR 800 DT is an antiviral medication used to treat a variety of viral infections caused by the herpes virus family. This includes cold sores (herpes labialis), genital herpes infections, herpes simplex infections, shingles (herpes zoster), and chickenpox. It also helps in preventing future outbreaks of these infections, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

How does ACIVIR 800 DT work?

ACIVIR 800 DT contains aciclovir, which is an antiviral agent. It works by interfering with the multiplication of the virus within human cells. Once inside the body, aciclovir is converted into an active form that inhibits a key viral enzyme called DNA polymerase. This action stops the virus from replicating its DNA, thereby preventing it from producing new viruses and clearing up the infection.

What is the usual dosage for ACIVIR 800 DT?

The dosage of ACIVIR 800 DT varies significantly depending on the specific viral infection being treated, the patient's age, and their overall health. For adults with herpes zoster (shingles) or chickenpox, a common dosage is 800 mg taken five times daily for 7 days. For initial episodes of genital herpes, 200 mg five times daily for 10 days might be prescribed. For suppressing recurrent genital herpes in individuals with healthy immune systems, 400 mg twice daily for up to 12 months may be used. In immunocompromised patients, 800 mg four times daily is often recommended. For children, the dosage is calculated based on body weight, typically 20 mg/kg (not exceeding 800 mg) four times daily for chickenpox in children over 2 years old. This is a dispersible tablet, meaning it should be dissolved in a glass of water before consumption. It can be taken with or without food, ideally at fixed times to maintain consistent drug levels.

What are the possible side effects of ACIVIR 800 DT?

Common side effects associated with ACIVIR 800 DT include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, fever, and skin rash. These side effects are usually temporary and resolve as your body adjusts to the medicine. Rarely, more serious side effects can occur, such as hives, blistering or peeling rash, yellow skin or eyes, unusual bruising or bleeding, loss of consciousness, fits, difficulty breathing, hallucinations, and swelling of the face, tongue, lips, or throat. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, it's important to consult your doctor immediately.

Is ACIVIR 800 DT safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Aciclovir, the active ingredient, is not known to be harmful in pregnancy and can help reduce the severity of herpes and chickenpox. However, some sources suggest caution due to potential risks, and it should only be used if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, as advised by a doctor. A prospective epidemiologic registry found birth defect rates similar to the general population, but it was too small for definitive conclusions on less common defects. Breastfeeding: Aciclovir passes into breast milk in small amounts. While generally considered unlikely to cause side effects in a healthy infant, caution is advised. It's recommended to consult your doctor before taking this medicine if you are breastfeeding.

Can ACIVIR 800 DT be taken with other medications?

While no broadly significant drug interactions have been identified, certain medications can affect aciclovir levels in the body. Drugs like probenecid (used for gout), cimetidine (for stomach problems), and mycophenolate mofetil (an immunosuppressant) can increase the concentration of aciclovir in the blood by interfering with its elimination from the kidneys. Additionally, there may be an increased risk of kidney-related side effects when taken with other drugs that affect kidney function (e.g., ciclosporin, tacrolimus). It's also important to avoid vaccination with varicella and zoster vaccines during treatment with ACIVIR 800 DT, as it may reduce the vaccine's effectiveness. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while using ACIVIR 800 DT?

Patients with kidney disease should use ACIVIR 800 DT with caution, and a dose adjustment may be necessary. Adequate hydration by drinking plenty of water is crucial during treatment to prevent kidney damage. Elderly patients (over 65 years) may be more prone to side effects due to slower drug clearance and may require a lower dose and monitoring for neurological issues. If you have liver conditions, caution is advised, and dose adjustment might be needed. ACIVIR 800 DT can cause dizziness or drowsiness, so activities requiring mental alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, should be avoided if you experience these effects. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to aciclovir or valaciclovir.

What happens if a dose of ACIVIR 800 DT is missed?

If you miss a dose of ACIVIR 800 DT, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should ACIVIR 800 DT be stored?

ACIVIR 800 DT should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from excessive heat and direct sunlight. It should be kept out of the sight and reach of children. The recommended storage temperature is typically between 10ºC and 25ºC or below 30ºC.
