Name
- Brand Name: XALATAN Eye Drop
- Common Name: Latanoprost Ophthalmic Solution

- Inactive Ingredients: Sodium chloride, sodium dihydrogen phosphate monohydrate, disodium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, and water for injection.
Uses
XALATAN Eye Drop is prescribed for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients diagnosed with:
- Open-angle glaucoma
- Ocular hypertension It works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor from the eye, thereby lowering the pressure.
Dosage and Administration
The recommended dosage is one drop into the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening.
- Do not exceed once daily dosing, as more frequent administration may decrease the IOP-lowering effect.
- If using other eye drops, administer them at least five minutes apart.

Frequently asked questions
What is XALATAN EYE DROP used for?
XALATAN EYE DROP (latanoprost) is used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in individuals diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. This medication helps prevent vision damage that can occur due to high eye pressure.
How does XALATAN EYE DROP work?
XALATAN contains latanoprost, which is a prostaglandin F2α analogue. It works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor (the fluid inside the eye), primarily through the uveoscleral pathway and also through the trabecular meshwork. This increased outflow helps to lower the pressure within the eye.
What is the usual dosage for XALATAN EYE DROP?
The recommended dosage for XALATAN EYE DROP is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening. It is important not to exceed one dose per day, as more frequent administration may decrease its effectiveness or paradoxically increase IOP.
What are the possible side effects of XALATAN EYE DROP?
Common side effects include blurred vision, burning, stinging, itching, or redness of the eye. Other reported effects are a sensation of something in the eye, changes in eyelash length, thickness, pigmentation, and number, eyelid skin darkening, browning of the iris (which may be permanent), watery eyes, dry eyes, eye discomfort, lid crusting, increased sensitivity to light, headache, dizziness, and muscle/joint pain. Serious side effects are rare but can include eye swelling, severe discomfort, vision changes, or severe irritation.
Is XALATAN EYE DROP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
XALATAN should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Very little of the medicine is absorbed into the bloodstream when applied as eye drops, so it is generally not thought to be harmful during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, it is always best to consult your doctor.
Can XALATAN EYE DROP be taken with other medications?
Yes, XALATAN can be used with other topical ophthalmic medications to lower intraocular pressure. If you are using more than one type of eye drop, administer them at least five minutes apart. However, XALATAN should not be mixed with eye drops containing thimerosal, as precipitation may occur. The combined use of two or more prostaglandin analogs (like other latanoprost, bimatoprost, or travoprost eye drops) is not recommended, as it can decrease the IOP-lowering effect or cause paradoxical elevations in eye pressure.
What precautions should be taken while using XALATAN EYE DROP?
Patients should be aware of potential gradual changes to pigmented tissues, including increased brown pigmentation of the iris, which can be permanent, and reversible darkening of the eyelid skin and changes to eyelashes (increased length, thickness, pigmentation, and number). XALATAN contains benzalkonium chloride, which can be absorbed by soft contact lenses. Remove contact lenses before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface.
What happens if a dose of XALATAN EYE DROP is missed?
If you miss a dose of XALATAN EYE DROP, skip the missed dose and continue with your next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one. Consistent use is important for managing eye pressure.
How should XALATAN EYE DROP be stored?
Unopened bottles of XALATAN EYE DROP should be stored in a refrigerator at 2° to 8°C (36° to 46°F) and protected from light. Once a bottle is opened, it can be stored at room temperature (up to 25°C or 77°F) for 4 to 6 weeks. After this period, any remaining solution should be discarded. Do not freeze the drops.
