Frequently asked questions

DALACIN C 600 INJ by PFIZER LIMITED is an antibiotic medication containing clindamycin, used to treat various bacterial infections.

What is Dalacin C 600 INJ used for?

DALACIN C 600 INJ is primarily used to treat serious bacterial infections in different parts of the body. These include lower respiratory tract infections (like pneumonia, empyema, and lung abscess), serious skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections (including osteomyelitis and septic arthritis), serious gynecological infections (such as pelvic inflammatory disease), intra-abdominal infections (like peritonitis and abdominal abscess), septicaemia (blood poisoning by bacteria), endocarditis, and dental infections. It is often recommended for patients who are allergic to penicillin. It is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.

How does Dalacin C 600 INJ work?

DALACIN C 600 INJ contains clindamycin, which is a lincosamide antibiotic. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, stopping their growth and preventing the infection from spreading. Clindamycin can exhibit either bacteriostatic activity (stopping bacterial reproduction) or, at higher concentrations, can be slowly bactericidal (killing bacteria), depending on the organism's sensitivity and the antibiotic concentration.

What is the usual dosage of Dalacin C 600 INJ?

The dosage of DALACIN C 600 INJ is determined by your doctor based on the specific infection, its severity, and your condition.

  • Adults: For serious infections, the usual daily dosage of clindamycin phosphate is 1200-2700 mg, given in 2, 3, or 4 equal doses. Doses up to 4800 mg daily have been used for life-threatening situations. Single intramuscular (IM) doses greater than 600 mg are not recommended, nor is administration of more than 1200 mg in a single one-hour intravenous (IV) infusion.
  • Children (over one month of age): The doctor will determine the dose based on their age, body weight, and the severity of the infection. For serious infections, it's typically 15-25 mg/kg/day in 3 or 4 equal doses; for more severe infections, 25-40 mg/kg/day in 3 or 4 equal doses. Clindamycin should be diluted prior to intravenous administration and infused over at least 10-60 minutes.

What are the possible side effects of Dalacin C 600 INJ?

Common side effects may include stomach pain, cramps or discomfort, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, and mild injection site reactions such as pain, swelling, and redness. More serious side effects can include severe stomach cramps, watery and severe diarrhea (which may be bloody) and fever, which can occur even weeks after stopping treatment. These may indicate Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD), a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention. Other serious side effects reported include severe hypersensitivity reactions (like DRESS, SJS, TEN, AGEP), fungal/yeast infections (thrush), and acute kidney injury.

Is Dalacin C 600 INJ safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Clindamycin crosses the placenta in humans. While systemic administration during the second and third trimesters has not been associated with an increased incidence of congenital abnormalities in clinical trials, it should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. As a precautionary measure, avoiding its use during the first trimester is preferable. The injection formulation contains benzyl alcohol, which can cross the placenta. Breastfeeding: Clindamycin has been reported to appear in human breast milk. It has the potential to cause adverse effects on the breastfed infant's gastrointestinal flora (such as diarrhea or blood in the stool) or rash. Therefore, it is not recommended for nursing mothers unless clearly needed, and an alternate drug may be preferred.

Can Dalacin C 600 INJ be taken with other medications?

Some medicines can interact with DALACIN C 600 INJ. These include the antibiotic erythromycin (these two drugs should not be administered concurrently due to demonstrated antagonism), rifampicin (monitoring for loss of effectiveness is needed), and some medicines that may be used during surgery, particularly neuromuscular blocking agents, as clindamycin can enhance their action. Interactions with vitamin K antagonists (e.g., warfarin) have been reported, leading to increased coagulation tests and/or bleeding, so frequent monitoring of coagulation tests is necessary. Clindamycin may also affect the activity of live bacterial vaccines, such as the oral typhoid vaccine. It's important to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal remedies you are taking.

What precautions should be taken with Dalacin C 600 INJ?

Inform your doctor if you have a history of gastrointestinal diseases, especially colitis, liver or kidney problems, or any allergies. The use of clindamycin can lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, particularly yeasts. It should not be given to premature babies or neonates due to its benzyl alcohol content. Regular monitoring of liver and kidney function tests and blood counts should be performed during prolonged therapy. DALACIN C 600 INJ does not adequately diffuse into cerebrospinal fluid, so it should not be used to treat meningitis.

What happens if a dose of Dalacin C 600 INJ is missed?

As DALACIN C 600 INJ is typically administered by a healthcare professional in a hospital or clinic setting, missed doses are unlikely. However, if a dose is missed, it's important to discuss this with your healthcare provider. It is crucial to complete the entire course of treatment even if you start to feel better to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent antibiotic resistance. Do not double doses to make up for a missed one.

How should Dalacin C 600 INJ be stored?

DALACIN C 600 INJ will normally be stored in a hospital setting. It should be stored at 2°C to 8°C (refrigerate, do not freeze). Keep it out of the reach of children.
