Description

XYLOFLO NASAL DROP 10 ML by LUPIN LTD

Name

  • Brand Name: Xyloflo Nasal Drops
  • Common Name: Nasal Decongestant

Composition

Xyloflo Nasal Drops contain the active ingredient Xylometazoline Hydrochloride 0.1% w/v. It also includes Benzalkonium Chloride Solution IP 0.02 %v/y as a preservative and an aqueous isotonic solution.

Uses

Xyloflo Nasal Drops are primarily used for symptomatic relief from nasal congestion (stuffy nose) caused by various conditions. It is prescribed for:

  • Common cold and flu
  • Allergic rhinitis (nasal inflammation due to allergies)
  • Sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses)
  • Reducing irritation and inflammation resulting from nose blocks

The medicine works by constricting inflamed blood vessels in the nasal passages, clearing the airways, reducing swelling, and allowing for a freer flow of air. It also helps manage mucus production.

Dosage and Administration

  • Adults and children over 6 years: Instill 2-3 drops into each nostril. A total of 3-4 applications per day is usually sufficient, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Administration:
    • Gently blow your nose before use.
    • Lie with your head lower than your shoulders or tilt your head back.
    • Gently squeeze the bottle to instill the recommended number of drops into each nostril, remaining still for a few minutes to allow the medicine to spread.
    • For nasal use only. Do not ingest.
  • Duration: Do not use for more than 7 to 10 consecutive days without consulting a doctor, as prolonged use may lead to rebound congestion.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Mild local irritation, burning, or stinging sensation at the application site
  • Nasal dryness
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Sneezing

Serious but rare side effects include severe allergic reactions (such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat leading to difficulty in breathing or swallowing, severe itching with a red rash or raised spots on the skin).

Precautions

  • Allergies: Avoid using Xyloflo Nasal Drops if you are allergic to xylometazoline or any other ingredients.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your physician if you have a history of:
    • Glaucoma (especially angle-closure glaucoma)
    • Adrenal gland problems (phaeochromocytoma)
    • Enlarged prostate gland
    • Diabetes
    • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
    • Overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism)
    • Heart problems or circulatory disorders
    • Chronic nasal inflammation with very dry nasal passages (rhinitis sicca or atrophic rhinitis)
    • Recent brain surgery
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as limited safety data is available.
  • Children: This medicine is generally not recommended for children below 12 years of age, though some sources indicate caution for children under 6 years for the 0.1% strength. Use in children should be under medical advice.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all current medications, especially monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors or other antidepressants, to avoid possible interactions.
  • General: Do not share the bottle to prevent the spread of infection. Avoid getting the drops in your eyes or mouth. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid driving or operating machinery.

Storage

Store Xyloflo Nasal Drops in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not allow it to freeze. Close the bottle tightly after each use.

Frequently asked questions

What is Xyloflo Nasal Drop used for?

Xyloflo Nasal Drop is a nasal decongestant primarily used to relieve nasal congestion (stuffy nose) associated with common colds, allergic rhinitis (nasal inflammation due to allergies), and sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses). It helps reduce irritation and inflammation in the nasal passages, clears airways, and allows for easier breathing.

How does Xyloflo Nasal Drop work?

The active ingredient in Xyloflo Nasal Drop is Xylometazoline hydrochloride. It works by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the nasal lining, which causes the inflamed blood vessels in the nose to constrict or narrow. This action reduces blood flow to the area, thereby decreasing swelling and congestion, and promoting a freer flow of air.

What is the usual dosage for Xyloflo Nasal Drop?

For adults and children over 6 years, the usual dosage is 2-3 drops into each nostril per application, typically 3-4 applications per day, or as directed by a physician. It is crucial not to use the medicine more frequently than recommended. The duration of use should not exceed 7 days without consulting a doctor, as prolonged use can lead to rebound congestion.

What are the possible side effects of Xyloflo Nasal Drop?

Common side effects include mild local irritation, stinging, dryness or discomfort in the nose, headache, and nausea. Some users may also experience sneezing, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, or dizziness. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions (such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat leading to difficulty breathing or swallowing), severe itching, or a red rash may occur. Prolonged use can lead to a condition known as rhinitis medicamentosa, or "rebound congestion," where nasal congestion worsens.

Is Xyloflo Nasal Drop safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During Pregnancy: Xyloflo Nasal Drop should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if clearly needed. It is advisable to consult your doctor before use, as limited safety data is available.

During Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before using Xyloflo Nasal Drop while breastfeeding. While it's generally considered unlikely to cause significant side effects in the baby, the amount of medicine excreted in breast milk and its effect on the nursing infant are not fully established.

Can Xyloflo Nasal Drop be taken with other medications?

It is important to inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking or plan to take. Xyloflo Nasal Drop should be avoided if you are taking or have recently stopped (within the last two weeks) Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs), a type of antidepressant, as this combination can lead to severe interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using Xyloflo Nasal Drop?

Do not use Xyloflo Nasal Drop if you are allergic to xylometazoline or any other ingredients. Inform your doctor if you have conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, adrenal gland problems (like phaeochromocytoma), very dry nasal passages (rhinitis sicca or atrophic rhinitis), a history of head injury, recent neurosurgery, or depression. This medicine is for nasal use only; avoid ingesting it or getting it in your eyes or mouth. To prevent the spread of infection, each pack should be used by only one person. Before application, gently blow your nose to clear your nostrils.

What happens if a dose of Xyloflo Nasal Drop is missed?

If you miss a dose of Xyloflo Nasal Drop, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

How should Xyloflo Nasal Drop be stored?

Xyloflo Nasal Drop should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Ensure the bottle is tightly closed after each use to prevent contamination. The medicine should be stored at room temperature, ideally below 30 degrees Celsius.
