XYZAL M Suspension 60 ML

XYZAL M Suspension 60 ML is an anti-allergic medication manufactured by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. It is commonly prescribed for children to manage various allergic conditions.

Composition Each 5ml of the suspension contains Levocetirizine dihydrochloride IP 2.5 mg and Montelukast sodium equivalent to Montelukast 4 mg. Levocetirizine is an antihistamine that blocks histamine, a substance causing allergic symptoms like sneezing and itching. Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks leukotrienes, which contribute to inflammation and narrowing of airways.

Uses This suspension is primarily used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever), suchial as runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. It is also effective in managing symptoms of bronchial asthma and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It helps in reducing inflammation and improving breathing.

Dosage and Administration The dosage is determined by a doctor and can vary based on the child's age, weight, and the severity of the condition. For children aged 2-5 years, it is commonly used, and for those aged 6-11 years, the recommended dose is typically 5 ml once daily in the evening. It can be taken with or without food. The bottle should be shaken thoroughly before use, and the correct dose should be measured with a spoon or cup.

Side Effects Common side effects may include headache, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, dry mouth, cough, and sore throat. Most of these are temporary and resolve with continued use. More serious side effects are rare, but if any severe or persistent symptoms occur, medical consultation is advised.

Precautions Caution is advised for children with liver or kidney problems. It should not be given to children allergic to levocetirizine, montelukast, cetirizine, or any other ingredients. It is recommended to avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase drowsiness. Patients should be cautious when engaging in activities requiring mental alertness due to potential drowsiness. XYZAL M Suspension is not for use during acute asthma attacks.

Storage Store XYZAL M Suspension in a cool and dry place, ideally at room temperature below 30°C. Protect it from light and moisture, and keep the bottle tightly sealed. Always keep it out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

What is XYZAL M SUSPENSION used for?

XYZAL M Suspension is primarily used to relieve symptoms associated with various allergic conditions, such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It helps alleviate symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, itching, watery eyes, nasal congestion, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. This suspension form is often prescribed for children and individuals who have difficulty swallowing tablets.

How does XYZAL M SUSPENSION work?

XYZAL M Suspension contains two active ingredients: Levocetirizine and Montelukast. Levocetirizine is an antihistamine that blocks the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body responsible for allergic symptoms like itching, sneezing, and runny nose. Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks the action of leukotrienes, which are substances that contribute to inflammation and narrowing of the airways. By blocking both histamine and leukotrienes, the medication provides comprehensive relief from allergy and asthma symptoms.

What is the usual dosage for XYZAL M SUSPENSION?

The dosage of XYZAL M Suspension should always be followed as prescribed by a doctor, as it depends on age, weight, and symptom severity. For children aged 6 to 11 years, a recommended dose is typically 5 ml once daily in the evening. For children aged 2-5 years, the Montelukast component is generally 4mg once daily, and the Levocetirizine component is 1.25mg twice daily; however, specific instructions for combination syrup should come from a doctor due to potential dosing challenges. The medicine can be taken with or without food.

What are the possible side effects of XYZAL M SUSPENSION?

Common side effects of XYZAL M Suspension may include drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, abdominal pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, and dizziness. Most of these side effects are usually temporary and resolve over time. However, if they persist or worsen, it is important to consult a healthcare professional.

Is XYZAL M SUSPENSION safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

XYZAL M Suspension is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to limited data and potential risks. Levocetirizine can pass into breast milk and may cause drowsiness in a newborn baby. While Montelukast is also excreted in breast milk, the benefits of breastfeeding are generally considered to outweigh the risk of exposure, but it's still advised to consult a doctor. A healthcare professional will weigh the benefits and risks to determine if the medication is appropriate.

Can XYZAL M SUSPENSION be taken with other medications?

It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, to avoid potential interactions. XYZAL M Suspension may interact with sedatives, certain antifungals (like ketoconazole), antitubercular medications (like rifampicin), and some antihyperlipidemic medicines (like gemfibrozil). Concurrent use with other central nervous system depressants or alcohol should be avoided due to increased drowsiness and impaired alertness. Montelukast, one of the active ingredients, has not shown clinically important interactions with drugs like theophylline, prednisone, digoxin, or warfarin in studies.

What precautions should be taken while using XYZAL M SUSPENSION?

Patients should avoid alcohol consumption while taking XYZAL M Suspension, as it can increase drowsiness and dizziness. Due to the possibility of drowsiness or dizziness, activities requiring complete mental alertness and motor coordination, such as driving or operating machinery, should be avoided until you know how the medicine affects you. Caution is advised for patients with kidney or liver problems. This medication is not meant for immediate relief during an acute asthma attack; appropriate rescue inhalers should be used for such situations. Rarely, Montelukast can be associated with systemic eosinophilia, sometimes presenting as Churg-Strauss syndrome, especially when oral corticosteroid therapy is reduced.

What happens if a dose of XYZAL M SUSPENSION is missed?

If a dose of XYZAL M Suspension is missed, it should be taken as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should XYZAL M SUSPENSION be stored?

XYZAL M Suspension should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. It is important to keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children and pets. The packaging or label will provide specific storage instructions.
