Description
ITROP PLUS EYE DROP (5 ML)
- Name: ITROP PLUS EYE DROP. Also known as Itrop Plus Eye Drops.
- Composition: ITROP PLUS EYE DROP contains a combination of two active ingredients: Phenylephrine (5% w/v) and Tropicamide (0.8% w/v). In some formulations, Benzalkonium Chloride (0.01%) is also listed as an ingredient. Phenylephrine is a decongestant, and Tropicamide is an anticholinergic.
- Uses: ITROP PLUS EYE DROP is primarily used for diagnostic purposes, specifically for eye examinations that require pupil dilation (mydriasis) and cycloplegia (paralysis of the ciliary muscle). It helps eye care professionals get a better view of the retina and other internal eye structures for detecting eye diseases like uveitis or during ophthalmoscopy procedures. It can also be used for pre- and post-operative dilation in eye surgeries, such as cataract surgery, to reduce inflammation and manage pain.
- Dosage and Administration: This medicine is for external (ophthalmic) use only. The typical dosage for diagnostic purposes or pre-operative use is 1-2 drops instilled into the eye(s) 15-20 minutes before examination. If the examination is not conducted within 20–30 minutes, an additional drop may be administered to prolong the effect. To administer, tilt the head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and squeeze the prescribed number of drops without touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface. Close the eye gently for 1-2 minutes to allow absorption. Remove contact lenses at least 15 minutes before instilling the drops.
- Side Effects: Common side effects include headache, dizziness, blurred vision, photophobia (sensitivity to light), eye pain, eye irritation, burning or stinging sensation in the eye, and skin rash. Other common side effects may include low blood pressure (hypotension) and nausea. Serious, though rare, side effects can include severe allergic reactions, nervous system effects in children (confusion, behavior changes), and increased intraocular pressure.
- Precautions:
- Glaucoma: Itrop Plus Eye Drops may increase pressure inside the eye and should not be used in patients with glaucoma or those at high risk for narrow-angle glaucoma.
- Children: Use with extreme caution in children, especially those with Down syndrome or brain damage, due to an increased risk of nervous system side effects. It is not recommended for children below 1 year. Some sources state it's not recommended for patients below 12 or 18 years of age.
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have heart diseases, hypertension (high blood pressure), hormonal disorders, thyroid problems, diabetes, or tachycardia (increased heart rate).
- Driving/Operating Machinery: Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until vision is clear, as the drops can cause blurred vision and light sensitivity. Wear sunglasses to protect eyes from bright light after use.
- Contact Lenses: Remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Allergy: Do not use if allergic to Tropicamide, Phenylephrine, or any other ingredients.
- Storage: Store in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of sight and reach of children. It should be stored at temperatures between 10ºC and 25ºC or below 30ºC, and does not require refrigeration.
Frequently asked questions
ITROP PLUS EYE DROP (5 ML) by CIPLA HEALTH LIMITED is an ophthalmic solution primarily used for eye examinations and certain therapeutic conditions. Here are some frequently asked questions about this medicine.
What is ITROP PLUS EYE DROP used for?
ITROP PLUS EYE DROP is mainly used for examining the eye during the diagnosis or detection of various eye diseases or therapeutic procedures. It helps in eye examinations by dilating the pupil, allowing for a thorough view of the retina and other internal structures. It can also be used to manage eye inflammation, such as uveitis, and in pre- and post-operative conditions to reduce inflammation and pain.
How does ITROP PLUS EYE DROP work?
ITROP PLUS EYE DROP is a combination of two medicines: Tropicamide and Phenylephrine. Tropicamide is an anticholinergic that works by relaxing the sphincter muscles of the eye and the ciliary muscle, which leads to pupil dilation (mydriasis) and temporarily prevents the eye from focusing (cycloplegia). Phenylephrine is a decongestant that constricts blood vessels and activates the dilator muscle of the pupil, also causing pupil enlargement. This combined action allows for a proper examination of the inside of your eye.
What is the usual dosage of ITROP PLUS EYE DROP?
The typical dosage of ITROP PLUS EYE DROP is usually one or two drops in the affected eye(s) as needed, or as directed by your physician. For diagnostic or pre-operative purposes, 1-2 drops are instilled into the eye(s) 15-20 minutes before the examination. It is crucial not to use the eye drops more frequently or for a longer duration than prescribed by your doctor.
What are the possible side effects of ITROP PLUS EYE DROP?
Common side effects of ITROP PLUS EYE DROP may include headache, dizziness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light (photophobia), eye pain, eye irritation, burning or stinging sensation in the eye, skin rash, low blood pressure, and nausea. Other reported side effects include increased intraocular pressure, ocular hyperemia, conjunctivitis, dry mouth, irregular heartbeat, allergic reactions, muscle rigidity, and, in rare cases, severe nervous system disturbances in children. If any side effects persist or worsen, you should inform your doctor.
Is ITROP PLUS EYE DROP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
ITROP PLUS EYE DROP should be used with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. There is limited information on its safety during pregnancy, and animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Similarly, there is limited information about its passage into breast milk and its effect on a newborn baby. It should only be used if prescribed by your doctor, who will weigh the potential benefits against the risks.
Can ITROP PLUS EYE DROP be taken with other medications?
Since ITROP PLUS EYE DROP is for external use, it is less likely to interact with other medicines. However, you should inform your doctor if you are taking medications for hypertension (e.g., atenolol, propranolol), depression (e.g., sertraline, amitriptyline), halothane (anesthesia), atropine, or certain heart diseases (e.g., digoxin, quinidine), as interactions may occur. If you are using other eye drops, wait at least 5-10 minutes between administering each medication to prevent dilution or interaction.
What precautions should be taken when using ITROP PLUS EYE DROP?
Several precautions should be observed when using ITROP PLUS EYE DROP. It should not be used if you are allergic to Tropicamide, Phenylephrine, or any other ingredients, or if you have glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye) or an eye condition like changes in the iris. Use with caution if you have heart diseases, high blood pressure, hormonal disorders, thyroid problems, diabetes, or an increased heart rate. Remove contact lenses at least 15 minutes before instilling the drops, as they may cause eye irritation. After using the drops, your eyes may become sensitive to light, so it is advisable to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from bright light. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until your vision clears, as it can cause temporary blurred vision. ITROP PLUS EYE DROP is not recommended for children below 1 year and should be used with extreme caution in children, especially those with Down syndrome or brain damage, due to an increased risk of side effects affecting the nervous system.
What happens if a dose of ITROP PLUS EYE DROP is missed?
If you miss a dose of ITROP PLUS EYE DROP, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not over-instill the medicine to compensate for the missed application.
How should ITROP PLUS EYE DROP be stored?
ITROP PLUS EYE DROP should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. The temperature should not exceed 15°C - 25°C or be below 30°C. It is important to protect it from freezing and keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Discard the solution if it changes color, turns cloudy, or contains particles.
